Tested this for a WLED sound reactive project built on a prototype pcb board. It has beautiful bright colors. It runs under 2A for the whole setup and can be powered by a quality usb power plug. I don't need or want to run them at full brightness because they are inside and they get super bright on full. I found out after purchasing that most WLED 2D animations are based on a 16 x 16 LED grid so I will buy another and stack them in the final project. I will also have to switch to a higher current power supply. It's fairly flexible so it will need a stiff base to mount it to and doesn't get hot at low brightness so far.

I used a bunch of these for a project and my goodness are they bright. I use them, outdoors, in an enclosure (with a shade) at about 70% brightness and you can see them from a half mile away. You need to make sure you're giving it enough power though. I make my own batteries at 12V and then use an 5v 8 amp buck converter to ensure I'm not killing anything. Run everything off an Arduino Uno, works fantastic.

This was fairly inexpensive and quite easy to get working, also I was able to very quickly get it working with a raspberry pi as the matrix's DIN line doesn't actually require the full 5V that the rest of the matrix needs, the output of the RPI (pin 18 if you're using the defaults for the python rpi-ws281x-matrix-python sample code that in turn uses the rpi-ws281x module) is sufficient at a lowly 3.3 volts even though I'm using it a little out of spec. This worked without a level shifter or a transistor for me. Note that I did need to change the case of one import and remove the x on some xranges to get everything working nicely in python3. Don't forget to connect your external power supply ground to the RPI ground too.

Only buy if u plan on programing an arduino or rasp pi. More hassle than what its worth atm for common rgb enthusiasts. Btf would do well to pair this with an inexpensive wifi 2.1 controller
