Description

There are over 600 species of Ficus, most of them tropical & evergreen. Ficus produces a unique "fruit" Which is actually an inverted flower. Ficus is one of the most loved bonsai for many reasons. Ficus are one of the best varieties of bonsai trees for indoors. They're very easy to take care of & need little attention. In the Ficus family, The golden gate variety is the best for growing indoors. The attractive gray trunk is thick & sturdy topped by small, dark green oval foliage. It is an excellent tree for beginners, as most species of Ficus are fast growers, tolerant of most any soil & light conditions, make fine indoor bonsai, & perhaps most importantly, are remarkably forgiving of those just learning bonsai watering techniques. I bought this bonsai tree as my first, since I knew nothing about them. It arrived on time, but the pot was cracked! I already loved the tree, beautiful tree, thick trunk, and gorgeous condition, but the pot was cracked! I was bummed. No returns, so I was sent to Brussel's Bonsai (where I bought it from) to email them. After emailing Lisa Smith at Brussel's Bonsai, she/they ended up sending me another, bigger, more gorgeous pot, along with a huge bag of bonsai potting soil. The pot even came with mesh and wire for repotting. Wow. I was just hoping for a new pot, but Lisa delivered above and beyond! This pot came SO wrapped up with plastic, and foam peanuts, that there was NO WAY it could be damaged. The original pot was also secured great, and was probably damaged is shipping, but Lisa and Brussel's Bonsai came thru anyway. Don't be hesitant about ordering ANY plants from this company. 5 stars and over. Beautiful. This company knows it's "bonsai". ... show more

    • Nice, healthy tree, but could have been pruned better.

The tree arrived in good shape and for the most part, looks nice. My main gripes are that it's larger than expected, it was supposed to be 5" to 8". The tree is actually about 10" plus the container, about 13 inches total. Normally, that wouldn't be an issue, but I bought this to put it into a large terrarium. It doesn't fit very well, so can't really use it that way. For now, it stays in its pot and I'll have to look elsewhere for a smaller tree. Height aside, my other complaint is that the pruning is not very good, nothing like the product image. It has branches that should have been pruned and is missing branches on the side of the trunk that would have added to a better shape, much like the one in the product image. I can see where branches must have been growing from the side of the trunk before they were pruned off, hopefully, more branches will grow to help improve the shape over time. ... show more

I watched the tracking like a hawk - with single digit temperatures I wanted to make sure the tree didn't have to endure anything too crazy. When it arrived I slowly brought it up to temperature by storing it on the cooler porch, then brought it into the house. The box was a lot bigger than I thought. I opened it up and found lots of packing peanuts. I scooped out a layer and found the tree. Reached down to lift the whole pot but it was taped securely to the bottom of the box. Once I realized it was wrapped up and I could invert it without anything shifting or soil getting rustled around I inverted the box and disposed of the peanuts. With the pot in plain view a few cuts and I had the tree free. The trunk is in great condition, there were already a few training wires on the lower branches. Lots of darker, healthy looking leaves. The soil was moist and the pot very nice. I had already ordered a humidity drip tray, filled that up and then placed my new tree in the middle. The soil was still cool, in the interest of still trying to allow it to warm up gradually I placed the tree close to my north facing picture window. We're on day three. Some leaves are curling and I've given it some high humidity baths (cool mist humidifier).. The description says it could drop 20%. We'll see. Day 20. About five days in all leaves curled up and turned brown. I've continued misting and watering on schedule. Green buds that were on the branches looked promising but turned brown as well around day 12. I continue to keep the soil moist and mist. I have e-mailed Brussels Nursery for help. Day 25. Branches seem to feel 'dead', leaves are all dead and starting to fall off naturally. I have not received any word back from Brussel's so I've initiated a return of the product. I'll keep the tree for a week or two before I send it back in hopes for a miracle. NOTE: The Brussel's website states that trees should NOT be delivered in cold or hot temperatures. My tree arrived on the day we were in the 'Polar Vortex' and temperatures in the single digits. The Amazon page does not list this. So ship in COLD or HOT at your own risk. I have to assume that's what killed my tree. I followed the instructions perfectly. ... show more

The tree came in a good, sturdy packaging and it was easy to put together the humidity tray as well. The tree was all green and healthy. I've always wanted a bonsai but I'm not great with plants so the leave are a little yellow now after a month but I'll keep on trying to make it healthier. Definitely love how it looks for it's price. I was a little apprehensive to get this for this was a retirement gift for someone who likes to garden and plant things, but never had a Bonsai, but this arrived earlier than expected and came in perfect form. Other reviews said that the plant was dead when it arrived so I was nervous, but they packaged it really well and the leaves were vibrant green and alive and the tree looked intact. I was able to give it as the gift and recipient was happy and says it looked great among their potted plants by the window. ... show more
