This particular model is a fantastic value for its price, extremely versatile and functional, wireless connectivity was a breeze, print quality (black or color) is first rate. There are tons of choices if you're looking for a printer, but if you need something for your home (or home office) the Brother MFC-J1010DW should be strongly considered. ... show more

Be prepared to wait on ink

Updated: Since writing this review, I have written to support at brother three times about the slow ink deliveries. They are spectacularly unhelpful, and send boilerplate messages barely addressing my concern. I thought OK I’ll upgrade to the higher level, Maybe they’ll send out ink faster if they see I’m paying 25 a month for the elite tier of pages… Nope! You will still have to wait. I average 2 to 3 days with no ink in the printer, waiting on ink to arrive, and generally speaking I always have a print job halfway done that has failed because of ink running out. I’m downgrading this review to one star because of the EZ subscription service, which is anything but easy or effective. ________ I bought the device intending to print anywhere from 100-500 pages in color a month. The quality of the output on the device is fine. There's no arguing the ink subscription service is a financial savings versus buying your own expensive cartridges. But in my experience already three times this month, I have run out of ink midway through a color print job, to be reassured by the app, "ink's already been ordered" cheerfully, but then have to wait 3-4 days additional for the ink that supposedly "will arrive before you need it" to arrive. Simply put that's not acceptable for a printer intended for regular usage, especially for color printing. I opted for a higher level subscription because I expect to print that many pages a month...but my $10 a month for ink isn't such a great deal when you're left with a print job half finished and have to wait days to continue it. Be aware if you are going to opt for a higher level of subscription because you intend to actually the device regularly, the ink service is going to lag and be very, very annoying. Also be aware that unless you print in Draft quality at all times, this is going to continue to be the case, because they don't ship faster ink to you just because you opt to print in OK or Best quality. If your printer loses power, be assured that you will likely lose authentication with the subscription service, and re-enabling it is a chore. I haven't faxed with it (who does?) but scanning and photocopying while working OK, also fail to work if one of your color inks is empty. Supposedly you can continue to copy and scan in B&W while you wait for the "E-Z" refill to finally show up....but in reality, error messages on the device display scream at you to replace the ink, and won't go away for you to access the copy/scan panel. SO the only way you can use it such circumstances is to initiate a scan via the PC or iOS app, you can't do it from the device itself while it is in crybaby mode. Finally, there's an issue with the buffer built into this device. The device claims to have a memory built in, but it's paltry. If you print a large print job and your PC print app assures you it sent the whole thing to the printer...it doesn't. The print only accepts some of it. If you dare to print a large job overnight, rest assure come morning it will have stopped after about ten pages in halfway through a page, losing the rest of the print job. You really do have to sit there and make sure your PC doesn't go to sleep until the entire print job is completely executed, or this happens repeatedly. The printer is fairly slow on color jobs, which means if you want to, say, print a 100-200 page doc, you really do need to do it at a time you're going to be able to sit there for hours making sure the PC doesn't go to sleep. Good printer, sucks ink

I do like Brother printers, and this one is high on the list. Easy to set up (I added a wifi range extender to give uninterrupted wifi to my phone) easy to understand. I am a HEAVY printer for just a few weeks of a year. This machine ran non stop for a few hours, and did get to the "grey" phase of print quality that all Brother mfc machines seem to get. I may be able to adjust density/quality if I use a pc. I was able to make decent additional copies using the copy function and increasing density. But that causes increased ink use. I went through the included black cartridge AND an "XL" black cartridge. The XL cartridges only allow 250 pages - not as XL as I need. While I am intrigued by the auto refill option offered by Brother, I am unsure as to which level I should get. It will automatically increase your level based on what you print, but won't automatically reduce that level based on reduced use. And it is a bit intrusive, knowing a company can see how much I print. That option can be turned off in the mobile connect app though. The machine CAN easily 2 sided print, but in order to do 2 sided copying, you either need to put each side on the glass, or run the machine as 1 side to 2 side. The ADF is very good using 24lb paper, with printing being speedy. The lower tray can barely hold 150 sheets, fewer means no jams. I haven't scanned yet, but the machine apparently can scan direct to a file without futzing with another program. We use our mfc-j6920dw for faxing. But the color touchscreen and nice buttons on the 1010 would make faxing a breeze. The machine has a small footprint and runs quietly. The wireless functions are good with the wifi extender, and the mobile app is very nice with my S24+ phone. I can print right from my Google Drive, very handy for me. Ink prices vary, but the LC401 cartridges are available in plenty. I got 5 xl black cartridges for under $40, a nice deal. I'm still on the "starter" color cartridges. Fast printing, simple & easy to use, reliable, long lasting, Excellent.

I LOVE this printer. I've owned 3-4 printers since the year 2000 and THIS one by far is the best. It was my first time trying Brother printers and I can now see why they're so ubiquitous. I print, and it's DONE super quick! Ink seems to last a while. The paper has NEVER jammed once in 6 months. My Epson used to jam EVERY print. And the only cord is the power cord since it connects to my pc wirelessly! I love how functional it is with its scanner and it's ability to scan from the top, which I haven't even used, but it can fax, as well as scan documents from those inserted from the top. Thank God also that the scanning software is simple and intuitive, and doesn't give you a bunch of bloatware you don't need. OH also, I LOVE that it comes with PaperPort which I hadn't used in years but forgot how much I loved it, I use it to sort all my PDF's, stack 'em, rotate them, crop them, all of it. As a long time HP person to gave Epson a try and hated it, I'm now a Brother convert and will remain one as long as this high quality continues. SO reliable. ... show more

Works well, easy setup & use, WiFi & USB connections

I’ve had this printer for about a month. So far so good. The setup process was super easy and probably only took about 15-20 mins max. It works great and I had no issues connecting via WiFi. I like that it has a USB connection option - which many don’t - in case I have issues in the future with WiFi printing. While there are a lot of buttons on the printer itself leading to an over complicated interface, it’s actually very easy to use. The print quality has also been great so far. It prints colors nicely though I mainly use for black and white. Knock on wood, I’ve also had no error messages. While it’s obviously not for big jobs, it prints pretty quickly all things considered. While I can’t speak to its longevity given the limited time I’ve owned it, I will note that the printer tray is not made out of the most durable plastic. I accidentally damaged the tray during set up when a tiny little plastic piece (the hinge) broke off, so now the tray doesn’t extend all the way out. This was not because it was hard to install the tray, rather I was just being careless and bent it in the wrong direction like an idiot. Fortunately, it has not caused any issues with printing. Overall, this printer has done its job well so far and provides good value considering the price point. If you searching for a home office printer and getting sick of reading way too many reviews that led me to believe they all sucked, then I would recommend ending your search and getting this one. ... show more

Perfect compact inkjet printer for individual use

After much research I bought this printer and I’m so glad I did. As a substitute teacher I use it moderately to print off worksheets but I mainly use it for personal use for my DIY projects. I’ve included a picture of a flower I printed with the printer that I decoupaged to an old tray I found at Goodwill and painted. As you can see the colors the printer produced for the flower were wonderful and spot on to the digital version on my phone. I’ve had the printer for a few months and used it fairly frequently and have yet to run out of ink although the yellow is starting to run a bit low. The set up was a breeze and it connects to my phone and laptop for printing with no problems. The printer isn’t slow so you aren’t left waiting ages for each page to print. I haven’t used the fax feature yet but will update this review if I do. Not too many people sending faxes these days! I highly recommend this printer for anyone looking for a compact printer that doesn’t take up a lot of space but prints gorgeous colors and is incredibly easy to set up. I had it up and running in under 20 minutes. If you’re running a huge business from home this probably isn’t enough bang for you but for a smaller home company or an individual like me it’s absolutely perfect. ... show more

Terribly intrusive and annoying

This is been a really good light duty printer. I have to fight with it to use generic ink though. It really doesn't like for me to use anything but Brother ink. Sometimes I have to reset the whole thing machine just because I changed an ink cartridge. Plus, I get these annoying pop-ups on my laptop all the freaking time about buying ink or getting an update. They're very intrusive and interrupt me constantly. I can't seem to figure out a way to turn them off! Brother is really shameless about pushing its products once you've installed this printer.
