This Brother Color Laser Printer is HEAVY (It says so in BIG LETTERS right on the box!) not so much you can't lift it, but dropping it would be a DISASTER. It might weigh 50 lbs, so you might want some help moving it around. The (included and already installed) BK C M Y toners are High-Yield, good for thousands of prints, and the included printed setup directions easy with clear diagrams on what to open, take out, and to remove shipping tags and plastic protectors. So far though, turning the printer on and pushing the right buttons for the prompts on the LED display is mysterious. (There's a handbook for this printer I'll have to download!) I didn't do enough research and the printer will ONLY work with Windows 10 & 11 32&64 bit, Mac OS and Linux, so my W7pro computer "To be printed files" are being downloaded to a nice new Windows 10 pro i7 with massive storage and RAM before I can do any printing. Getting the installation and setup programs is easy, (setup.brother.com) but none of that information is useful without at least a Windows 10 system that's compatible with the drivers. I got this printer because an ink-jet just doesn't have the quality for a long-lasting print, no matter what kind of paper it's printed on. A laser print on good paper will last for hundreds of years. That's value. A good reason for my purposes, but I also like the USB-connected printing capability (which it has) and don't like WiFi for the security concerns. (Two Days later) On the Windows 10 pro computer the Brother Color Laser installation was over and done with quickly. I had downloaded the "full" install version that includes the driver. The installation gave me the option of USB or WiFi and after that it was done. I just printed a photograph in rich darks and contrasting light tones from the open document in Photoshop 9. There was NO problem in recognizing the printer. The print only took about 10 seconds and came out beautifully, like the picture I took with amazing, perfect, details and exactly delicate colors and contrast. I had just resized it from 28 x 22 @ 180 to 10.5 x 8 @180 for normal A4 paper and printed, just to see what it would do. It prints Art! I thought this would be a good idea, but it's even better than I thought. ... show more

I have been buying inkjet color printers for decades and have never been happy as I don't print in color that often. The ink dried out and I have to waste paper and ink getting it to work correctly. I swore to myself that I'd get a color laser printer as soon as they reached sub $300 and I bought this one. I couldn't be happier, it just works and having duplex-printing available is a big plus on saving paper. I'm still using the original toner cartridges. Someone gave me a Brother laser printer so I use that for monochrome and this for color. I am so happy that I can just print and it works when needed. ... show more

    • Difficult to Install, Especially on a Mac

Seriously, the most ridiculous and cumbersome set up (that still doesn't work on a Mac OR a PC) that I have ever encountered. I followed all the instructions, all devices are on the same network, the printer printed ONCE from a Mac and now all I get are error notices. Brother Support is terrible with very convoluted info on their support page. I'm about ready to pack this up and return it. What a disappointment because I have three other Brother devices and they work GREAT. Not this one, plus the Deep Sleep feature is really a terrible inconvenience. UPDATE: Tried to contact customer support, the wait time was 30 minutes, with no call-back feature. So I went to ChatGPT to get help with the setup. Even though I had updated the firmware and downloaded the appropriate "EasySetUp" package, the devices would not connect. I did a hard reboot on both, still nothing. Eventually, the PC recognized the printer after multiple attempts. The Mac, however, kept giving me an "invalid certificate" error. Not much help on the Brother Support Page. Once again, I went to ChatGPT for help. I had to: 1) create a Self Signed Certificate; 2) Export the certificate to my Mac; 3) Open the Mac Keychain 4) Drag the certificate into the certificate menu; 5) Open the "Trusted" certificate menu item and make the certificate always trusted. Then I reset the whole printing system and reinstall the other printers on the network. Once all this was done, the printer produced excellent copies. But sadly, if you're a Mac user, you may encounter all kinds of weird stuff with this. Brother needs to update their support page for Mac users or at least do something to make it easier to install on the Tahoe OS. I suggest they use some AI to get the full picture. UPDATE 12/25: Now the stupid machine doesn't even recognize its own default password...so no updates for me! I followed all the "instructions" about reseting the darn thing, but it didn't work. Apparently this password issue is very common for Brother. NOW I have to reset the whole system, including the cumbersome wifi set-up. Probably will have create a new security certificate. Don't buy this machine if you're not relentless in fixing technical problems. They just keep happening over and over. ... show more

Although the shipping went from originally 3 days to 2 weeks, (not thrilled) the printer itself was a great buy! I am impressed with the ease of install to my Wi-Fi and begin printing from laptop, phone or iPad immediately. The instructions are very clear—just take your time and go step-by-step and you’ll be fine. The print quality of the printer is very impressive—much more detailed and sharper than I had imagined. Overall, I am very happy, it was worth the money, and I’m staying with Brother and Brother products. I just feel they have a better, affordable products and consumables, which we all know can be very expensive . No more ink!! The consumables (I bought a spare drum kit and HY Toner bundle) are VERY affordable compared other consumables to other printers that were similar in quality and price point. ... show more

Initial thoughts: -setup: very easy. Had to pull out each toner cartridge to break off some tabs that helds things still for shipping, and pull out some plastic; took about 5 mins without needing to look at instructions. I did look at them later and it was straightforward. -size/weight: a lot heavier than I expected, but its the same size at it looks. -add to wifi: you can run a setup and connect to the printer from your PC or phone and use that to change the wifi on your printer, or you can add it manually via the small one line LCD screen. I did it this way; it will definitely be painful for anyone with crazy long passwords with extra symbols like me. It was easy, just a lot of hitting the down-arrow icon looking for next character. But it added immediately, and was available immediately for search from my PC. -printing: it prints fast and its very quiet, Enough so that when I print to it (its directly behind my wife's desk) she doesn't notice. You can definitely hear it, but its quiet enough to blend in to background noise. -print quality: documents look sharp, icons etc look good both in color and black and white -print quality, photos: used some laserjet photo paper and printed out a picture: I'll put it in the 'good enough for a postcard or to send your mom her annual family pic to frame'. Definitely not the color sharpness/brightness you'd get from CVS, but not expecting that, either. We will likely use it for our next party invite instead of going to UPS store to print. -mobile printing; TBD, haven't tried -duplex printing: TBD, haven't tried -toner life: we probably won't need new toner for 6+ months and I'll try to update then. Overall, it does everything I expect it to at the level I expected. If you need a general/workhorse printer capable of printing anything at a reasonably decent level- this is likely the printer for you. If you are looking to print pictures to frame; get a color inkjet. Or just keep printing @ CVS which is likely cheaper anyway. ... show more

This is the most compact unit by Brother that adds the color capability to the previous generation's flawless and excellent "black and white only" printer I owned and was super happy with. It is as small as it can be at 15.7"D x 15.7"W x 9.4"H. Like its predecessor, the speed of processing is fast, there is rarely if ever a jam paper situation and if you run into one, it is easily remedied. Connection to the computer and devices are also a breathe. Also, you get an incredibly high number of prints before having to replace the cartridges. In contrast to the garbage ink guzzling bug ridden Canon printers that used up ink at jaw dropping rate. There is also black and white only print mode, so you won't use the color cartridges for black and white prints. You can also print on both sides of a page to prevent waste of paper. It doesn't have a scan function but that is really superfluous these days. You can use your phone or a dedicated camera set up to take photos with an overhead fixture with as much resolution if not more without limitation of the size that a built in scanner would impose or if you have serious scanning needs, you can invest in a standalone scanner. What is more important to me is the reduced weight and compact size of the unit. A disappointment that became an issue after purchasing the unit is that it doesn't support MCIR inks for printing checks that can be read by the financial institutions. It is rather surprising that there is no support for MCIR for any of the Brother's printers. They also don't recommend third party MCIR inks as it may damage the machine or impact the print quality. There are some issues with this unit that I found the solution to, which I didn't run in the ultra reliable black and white only model I used earlier. Occasionally, the prints you send to the queue abruptly disappear. The printer makes a noise and appear to be processing the job but then it stops. When you look at the queue list, the file is gone. You do not get an error or an explanation as to why this has happened. I am on Mac by the way OS Ventura. After troubleshooting I found out that very high resolution files are not liked by the printer. If this happens to you, reduce the resolution of the print jobs you send to the printer. I had created a number of high resolution 300DPI files and they invariably ran into this issue. Sometimes a complicated file name that has numbers, atypical characters, etc and is too long runs into the same issue. You have to rename the file to something simpler and then it prints. I have also printed designs on thick cardboard greeting cards and envelopes and it does an excellent job but you might run into jam errors depending on the thickness of the cards. The fix is very simple. You just open the tray and take the jammed card out and try again. Almost invariably the 2nd try works and the card itself is not chewed up or damaged. This is the most amazing thing about this printer; it leaves the paper intact if there is a jam. By the way the jamming only occurs with specific thicker paper types like this cardboard greeting card. Otherwise, I've never ran into an issue with label sheets, other paper types, etc. The print quality is very good. It dries fast as well so no worries about smudging the ink. Upgrading the firmware can be made easier. You have to go the link on the web that may trigger unsafe link warning from your browser (Brother suggests to ignore it and proceed with the link) in order to get to the section that allows you to upgrade the firmware. You have to enter the password printed in the back of the machine to complete the step. Nevertheless the firmware were updated but I didn't get a notice that a new update was available. I only learned of the update when I searched manually. An easier way is to download the Brother app and update the firmware easily that way. I had an older (discontinued) Dell Color Laser Printer that failed after six (6) years of somewhat regular use. I had to find a replacement, that would come along with a corresponding commitment to a new but dependable brand. This printer received excellent reviews from independent sources, and DEFINITELY performs as advertised. It is fully featured (with what one expects from a modern color laser printer). I got it for a good price from Amazon.com. It hasn't jammed yet, is not overly noisy, and seems to digest all of the different sizes and thicknesses of paper (and envelopes) that I throw at it. It connected to my network seamlessly and works just as well on the network as it does via the USB cable. The Duplex Printing Feature is saving me paper. The interface for Windows 11 is very functional and efficient. I have had it for four weeks, and it appears to be very economical with the toner use; and the (B&W and Color) output are excellent.
