  • Good Machine for Beginners and the Very Rusty
Style: CS5055PRW Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
This is a review for the Brother Project Runway CS5055PRW sewing machine (for those of you who like to cross-check reviews with the actual product, you smart people you). I'm an occasional sewer (occasional as in the last time I bellied up to a machine was 10 years ago), and the new fancified machines with the digital displays were well out of my price range back then. I didn't know if I would catch on well with this machine, which for all intents and purposes is a pretty basic machine, as far as sewing machines are these days. Let's break down what I know about using this thing: -The book it comes with will become your new best friend if you're new to sewing, or are rusty (like me). It gives a breakdown of all the moving parts and accessories that come with it, the how-tos of operating the machine, and gives a stitch guide on the uses for the various stitches (as well as which foot to use). -It comes with a decent bunch of starter needles, including a ball point needle and a double needle, so you can get going right away on most projects. -You can use spools of thread either vertically or horizontally (for those of you coming back to sewing after a long absence and wonder why you don't see a big spindle sticking out of the top). -The (semi)automatic threader is nifty, although it does take some getting used to. The needle must be in the completely up position, and you can't hold the thread too tight or too loose, otherwise it won't work. Other than that, it beats trying to stab the needle with the thread. -There is a thread cutter on the back and to the left for when you're finishing this stitch, and there is one in the bobbin housing to get your bobbin thread to the perfect length. -It's pretty darn easy to use overall, especially after you read the included book. I'm also all for looking up videos. I had to because the (semi)automatic threader was a tough one for me to grasp. -It's lightweight, although the handle is kind of awkward, so I recommend using two hands to move it anyway. -If you're buying this and plan on buying spare bobbins at the same time, buy the clear acrylic ones. Metal bobbins will not work in this machine. -BONUS TIP for those who plan on working with microsuede/suede/velvet: purchase a non-stick foot. I ripped out a lot of stitches before realizing this. I've used maybe 6 stitches from the list on this machine so far, but only because I haven't worked with thin materials or elastics yet. So far, so good. Don't have any complaints other than the (semi)automatic threader was a little difficult to figure out, but that's more on my end, and definitely not enough to dock a star. ... show more

  • Easy to use and reliable machine.
Style: CS5055PRW Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
I haven’t sewn in a few years but wanted to get back into it. I picked this machine after reading a lot of reviews both on Amazon and elsewhere. I couldn’t be more pleased so far!! The machine was packed really well and arrived in great condition. It had a quick setup guide as well as a complete manual for mire detailed instructions. It also had a sheet with the website and 800 number if you needed help. I had some trouble threading the bobbin initially but was able to resolve quickly on their website. I was ready to sew in less than 30 minutes. The machine itself it very easy to use. My old (very old) machine was nowhere near as smooth as this machine is! It’s a pleasure to use. Even stitches, easy to thread and wind bobbins. So far I’ve made a knit top fir myself and some things for my grandchildren. Very easy to adjust stitches! I’m so glad I puchased this machine. ... show more

  • Works great for quilting
Style: CS5055PRW Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
I’m 26, I had bought this same one at Walmart when I was 18 when I first started quilting but I had stopped for a good amount of years and when I moved some pieces got broken off (my bad for not being more careful packing it) when I recently decided to get back into sewing I decided to buy a new one because mine was just old and because I wasn’t caring for it rusted in the metal and plus I had pieces missing from moving and when looking for sewing machines I went with this one again because it worked so well for me before. I honestly love it and think it works great for the price. It’s definitely perfect for beginners, I kept the box this time so when I move I can safely transfer it. It feels so great to be sewing again. I definitely recommend this sewing machine, bought it when I was 18 and just repurchased it again at 26. Might go with something more heavy duty later in life but as of right now it does a great job for my quilting and masks I recently sewed because of this pandemic. Also I liked that it comes with a little storage unit thing on it and a few other things in a pouch idk the name to lol ... show more

  • Great machine for the price!!!
Style: CS5055PRW Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
This is an excellent machine for beginners and advanced users. I bought it for my mom but I had to learn about how to use it to show her as she was intimidated by the technical aspects of it. The lcd and push buttons. Her old machine was also a Brother machine she had forever which was all manual. I don’t know much about sawing so while the instructions are decently written I am not familiar with the terminology. Having said that I did find the machine easy to setup and easy to use. I tried a few runs on my own which resulted in a few laughs from my mom due to newbie mistakes but I soon got the hang of it the last few runs were almost perfect. I was then able to show my mom how to use it and she loved it. After I show her how to set it up and how to select stitch type, length and width and tried a few runs with different stitches and such she made the comment that is better and easier than her old machine. One thing she really liked is that when you select a stitch the lcd tells you what foot to use for it. Don’t know what that means but I trust she knows what she is talking about. One thing she did mentioned she didn’t like is that when the machine stops it leaves the needle down. She would prefer the needle up position. The manual doesn’t make a reference to needle up or needle down but a quick google search found a link to the brothers FAQ website and in there they tell you how to change this setting. Very complicated. Power machine off, then press and hold the minus button for the first digit of the stitch type while you turn the power on. That’s it. Mom is very happy with it now. :) This machine is also slightly lighter than my mom’s old machine. Which she also appreciated as she is getting older. So for her lighter is better. One thing I noticed while setting it up, and mom noticed it as well, is that the bobbing (sp ?) reel is top loading and not side loading like her old machine. There is a transparent piece of plastic that is removable to put the reel in the machine. This plastic piece goes into a larger non-transparent plastic that is removable. I assume the larger plastic is for cleaning and oiling the machine. These two pieces of plastic are thin and have little tabs that hold them in place. To me, from previous experience with similar items with little tabs, they seem flimsy and the tabs could easily break. I suggest to be very careful when removing them and also very gentle when putting them back. Outside that neither my mom or myself found anything else that was not good about the machine. And for those who are beginners, based on my experience helping my mom I say is definitely good for beginners even if you don’t quite know the terminology. And based on my moms comments is also very good for mid to advanced beginners. One additional note... it does not come with a case. I don’t believe any brother machine comes with one as my mom’s old machine didn’t have one. When I ordered the machine from amazon I found a universal case/bag that fits well with this machine for around $30.00. ... show more

  • Fairly easy to use and great value
Style: CS5055PRW Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
It is a great sewing machine for the price. It does what my $2000 machine from 1990 did before it finally died with replacement parts unavailable. The only drawback is the difficulty in getting a perfect bobbin wind and thus good tension in the machine. I have logged at least 50 hours on the machine now with mostly basic sewing but have used about six of the different stitches on a regular basis. Be sure to read the manual on how to set the needle to always be in the up position and to use stitch one to see in the center. It is worth the time to read through the manual while sitting at the machine before sewing no matter how much you know. I have sewn for decades but on a Bernini for the last 30. I was prepared to spend up to $1000 on a machine and decided to buy this machine to use until I could find the machine I planned to keep. The pandemic had just started and I was in the middle of a project and needed a machine, I could not convince the local Bernini dealer to sell me a machine over the phone and mail it to me so I bought this as a temporary, it is no longer my temporary. I know plan to keep this as my permanent machine. Pros for this machine. *Easy to use *Practical stitches *Easy to load and view bobbin *Easy to thread (especially with a piece of white paper behind eye of needle) *Very economical Negatives *Bobbin can be tricky to smoothly wind *Can jam easily when starting but resets by turning off and on *Could use wider arm for quilting ... show more

  • Finally. So easy to use.
Style: CS5055PRW Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
I have used a few different sewing machines before and had "simple" machines as a beginner (made for novices) that really were not that fun or easy to use, they weren't that "simple" at all. I stopped sewing for years because I couldn't quite get the hang of my sewing machines or they just weren't working as smoothly as I'd like so when I saw this one and read the reviews I hoped this was the machine I was looking for that would get me back into the swing of things and be so simple to use that I wouldn't get frustrated trying to figure everything out. I felt like I was a beginner again since it's been many years since I've sewn anything and I am SO glad I purchased this. It's a fantastic machine with so many sewing options that are quite simple to use. It made me LOVE sewing and I starting looking for all sorts of things in my house to repurpose or sew up and had fun doing it for once. The best thing about this machine is that whether you are a beginner or well experienced, this machine will work for you. I don't think it's made for heavy duty sewing like making upholstery and things but then again I never tried so it very well could be with the right needles and feet but I have sewn up Jeans, dresses, skirts, and shirts perfectly. I love this machine and have no doubt that everyone who buys this will too. ... show more

  • An Inexpensive And Impressive Sewing Machine
Style: CS5055PRW Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
Early days yet, but speaking as a complete neophyte when it comes to machine sewing or anything remotely to do with it, one couldn't have an easier time learning how than with this machine. A great selection of needles, feet and other accessories. The machine itself has umpteen pre-recorded patterns in it that *sew themselves*! How great is that? I want to add a border of embroidered leaves, vines and whatnot to my handkerchiefs, I just punch a few buttons and feed the material. Threading the machine was easy and straightforward from the directions in the book, even though I had never done so before in my life on any machine. The automatic threader took me a few minutes to understand because it was too simple and I could not see the magic hook that makes it all work. Definitely worth what it cost. ... show more

  • LOVE this machine!
Style: CS5055PRW Pattern Name: Sewing Machine
I purchased this machine to replace my old sewing machine (the exact same model, seven years old) which finally died after years of heavy use. I am a professional costume builder and use this machine at home when I am not working from a costume shop- my old one held up astoundingly well over time for such an inexpensive machine and I was grateful to see the same model still available when I needed one on short notice (quick turn-around job, no time to get the old one serviced). Great machine for beginners too, I have used mine to teach sewing lessons in the past (easy to thread, wind bobbins, etc). 10/10 would recommend as a solid, inexpensive domestic machine for light-to-medium weight woven and knit fabrics. The embroidery functions are fun to play with too! ... show more
