Right out of the packaging this P O S doorbell did not work. Other reviews said cheap and falling apart…..agreed. Mine happened to be one that rings and won’t stop ringing. Now I have to waste more time just to try and find a brand that works. Whoever put the sticker on my doorbell that says “QC passed” evidently needs new glasses or maybe actually “test” the item they are quality checking which we all know doesn’t happen but the sticker looks assuring! Broan-NuTone used to mean quality. What happened? A few years ago I purchased a doorbell just like this one and it was made of better quality materials! Please stop making cheap stuff. Go back to the designs of yesterday make quality items and I’ll pay more. ... show more

I never fixed or changed a doorbell before but our doorbell had been on the fritz for six months or more. Finally I had the drive and the time to see what the problem was. I didn't see how to remove the old doorbell except to pull it out. Sure enough it came out with two wires attached to it and two metal tabs that acted as anchors that pressed against the sides of the hole drilled for it. I went to the local hardware store and none of the doorbells were like the one I pulled out. They all were screw in types which would mean I had to drill a couple of holes in the stucco, put in plastic anchors and screw in the new doorbell--all stuff I didn't want to do. After searching and searching online I came across this doorbell but with no adequate pictures I still wasn't sure if this would work. I figured $10 and change was worth a look-see. When I opened the package I was very satisfied to see it was a perfect match of the one I removed. All I needed was a small philips screwdriver and a pair of needle nose pliers and I had my new doorbell installed and illuminated in a matter of minutes. This is a basic door bell button, which works really well when you need to fit the item in a stucco wall. The one thing that the description does not mention, though some other reviewers have touched on it, is that to make it work with a door chime, you need to purchase a separate diode (1N4002). When I bought this item, I assumed that everything needed for installation was included. Since the accompanying instructions were rather sparse, I actually had to contact NuTone for additional information. Besides confirming that I needed the above diode, I learned two things: 1. The diode functioned correctly only if hooked up in with the doorbell button poles in a specific direction. If when you attach it, the chime works as a basic, ding-dong bell, reverse the diode connection. Though it is not difficult to pull the button out of the wall, it obviously makes more sense to test it before seating it in the wall. 2. The diode is attached by making a small loop in it's wires, then connecting them to the same terminals as the bell's wires. I would recommend using a pair of needle nose pliers to make the loop. It is also helpful to place the screw through both of the wires (doorbell and diode) that you will be connecting to each terminal, prior to placing the screw in the terminal. Note, NuTone specifies the diode as 1N4002F. It is no different from the 1N4002 that you can order through Amazon; however, NuTone charges $7.52 for shipping. So, buy from Amazon, if you are a Prime member. NuTone's price for the unit is $3.72 (excluding shipping and taxes). Also, if you are replacing an existing door chime button, check to see if there is currently a diode attached. Our contractor originally pulled the button during remodel, and when one of the terminals broke off, he threw the entire button away. He did not know about the diode. ... show more

I bought and installed this door bell 7 years ago. It has been working well. the light is still functioning and hasn't burned out after 7 years of being constantly on. It is hooked up to a 10 v transformer (lower voltage than normal). Maybe that is why it has been working well all this time. It doesn't get stuck some other door buttons I have pushed in past. So overall I highly recommend this doorbell button. Wow, I went to take a photo for this reveiw and noticed that it was cracked in middle. But still staying ther and I couldn't pull the button out of sucket. So I still think this is a great doorbell button and would buy it again. ... show more

1. There are no instructions on mounting hole size or depth. > You need to make sure the hole in stucco wall is deep enough and wide enough, else it won’t fit flush to wall & you will need to fill with foam or caulk. See photo. 2. The screws can be very tight, if you don’t hold onto the white part just under the screws, it will break the button (that houses bulb and wiring) and will fall apart and snap off the notches that hold it together and can’t be put back together (maybe could super glue it). When my husband and I were house hunting, one of the first things I noticed about our favorite house was that it had an apple door bell cover. Before we even got in the front door, I told my husband "oh that's gotta go." We put in an offer on the house and I put this guy in my amazon cart. Fast forward 45 days, we closed on the house yesterday and it was quite literally the very first thing I changed once we got there. This door bell cover was very easy to install. Didn't even take me 2 minutes. The hardest part was shoving the cover flush with the house. Looks great. Made a huge impact in our front door area, everything matches the new knobs now!
