Aggressively non-descript, if you need a 16v mechanical door chime that just works, this seems to be the ticket. Appropriately loud, worked perfectly with my Ubiquity G4 Doorbell set to mechanical chime mode on a hot 16v/30VA transformer (runs high at 17.8). There was enough room under the chime cover for the doorbell's chime transceiver. The product was a simple one/two note older style doorbell replacement and sent as described, works perfectly now, but had to drill a new placement hole for the shorter old wires to reach to the front screw attachments. Either that or add a couple inches of wire to the old ones. Consider wireless.

Paid more ($26) for this unit thinking it would be a higher quality chime inside and it was exactly the same insides as the $14 unit that failed. Save your money if your buying NuTone, might as well get the cheapest product because the insides will probably be identical. The doorbell switch is what failed on my setup. The doorbell is also NuTone and I took it apart and it is the cheapest junk that I ever saw. If the switch fails shorted it will blow either the transformer or chime (in my case both). May even cause a fire. My wife said she smelled something burning and it was the chime due to a failed door switch. This NuTone stuff is not recommended. The doorbell switch uses an incandescent bulb - should be LED for long life. NuTone is still stuck in the 60's with their designs. ... show more

When we moved into our home, the wired chime had been removed. Bought this to have a wired chime again. It’s a basic “ding-dong” mechanical chime. Simple design doesn’t call attention to itself and can hear it throughout our 2 story home. Works with our Ring doorbell.

    • Craftmade CH2401 sounds much better

I compared this side by side with the Craftmade CH2401 which is about the same price, connecting each one and listening to the sound difference. The Craftmade CH2401 sounds much better with a rich sounding ding-dong completing the full sustain. This NuTone chime has a somewhat muted sustain because it's in a horizontal orientation and gravity mutes the vibration of the chime bar on the -dong portion. Also the Craftmade circuit board has capacitors which store energy to complete the full notes. The Craftmade also has a nice wood cover that can be stained or painted to any color, whereas the NuTone has a cheap plastic cover. ... show more

Replaced an old wooden covered door bell chime with this contemporary style from Broan-NuTone. Although the cover on the chime is plastic it is durable and I would expect it to last for many years due to the device hanging on the wall. My old chime cover was wooden and that would have been the norm back in the day. I probably would end up paying more for chime constructed of wood or metal in our current market. Mechanically speaking, replacing a door bell chime is easy as you are only dealing with various screws and a couple of low voltage wires. Not much has changed in regard to the internal components of the chime as it appears almost identical to the old chime. The chime cover does sit slightly off the wall but that is to be expected with many mechanical chimes configured this way. The cover on the chime has to make space for the internal components therefore the cover is designed intentionally to allow clearance. The chime is a proper two note "ding-dong." The chime Looks good on the wall and sounds good so that fits my needs. ... show more
