Most people who change their own oil,, on their lawn mowers and lawn tractors, myself included, have used regular motor oil for decades. This currently creates a possible problem for your small engine. A number of years ago, the Federal Government, in an effort to extend the life of automotive catalytic converters, had the oil refiners/sellers remove a critical ingredient, zinc based "ZDDP", from all motor oils. The zinc provided an important, high pressure lubricating function at the valve lifter/camshaft interface. While most cars manufactured after the late 80s, had roller valve lifters, which could function reasonably well without this additive, older style "flat tappet" equipped engines, such as the small engines in outdoor power equipment continue to be, still need the extra zinc, to ensure long life. This is where the B&S oil fits in. It has the higher zinc content of the "older" motor oil formulations. ... show more

I bought this pre-measured oil as part of a discounted set with spark plug and air filter to tune up the Briggs & Stratton 650EX on my lawn mower. All fired up right away after the tune-up and seems to be running fine. Don't just dump it all in--put in most of it, but check oil level before adding the last 3-5 ounces. My Briggs and Stratton push mower took a dive and I didn't know the cause. Decided to change the oil again, spark plug and rebuild the carb. All needed to be done, so I can't say what the definitive answer was. All I know, is that after putting that much time into getting it running again, I was not going to use any other oil that was not recommended.
