  • A really enjoyable book.
This story is a true original. I've been reading fantasy for many years and never read anything quite like it. A refreshing change for the genre. I look forward to reading the next installation.

  • Fantasy for everyone..
I enjoyed the meld of fantasy and western storytelling. Outlaws and good guys. Families made from diverse creatures. I love the imagination of the author. Enjoy the video.

  • An exciting combination of western adventure and fantasy charm
I loved the idea of this book the moment I read the blurb, but it still managed to exceed my expectations in terms of the story and worldbuilding. The exciting combination of western settings and characters mixed with fantasy charm had me engaged from the first page to the last. The characters were very well developed and came to life on the page, and I loved the way Campbell brought even the non-human characters and the setting itself to life through her writing. It's such a fascinating world and I really felt like I was there walking through the streets of the outlaw mage town as I read. I also enjoyed seeing how the relationships between characters developed and how that in turn influenced their own personal growth and chance throughout the story. There are a ton of characters to keep track of here and I generally prefer a smaller cast, but with more books to come, I can see how each has room to grow and impact the story further as we go along. Breaker is a strong first book in what promises to be a really fun and unique series, and I look forward to reading the next installments. ... show more

  • Kind of Goofy
The plot seemed interesting by the synopsis but there were many times I wanted to stop reading. Something about the writing style and jumps didn't suite the style of prose I am used to reading. While the concept was unique, there were many times where i found myself thinking if i was actually enjoying the mix of western and fantasy or just wanting to. Not my cup of tea ... show more

  • Surprising I loved it
I’ll be honest I “bought” this because it was free one day. I thought I’d read a couple of pages and then give up. 5 hours later, I finished. I love this book, the characters, the premise, I went and ordered the rest of the series. Guess what I’m reading tonight. I also got Persuader early through the author’s website. Thank you, Amy Campbell for expanding my reading horizons. ... show more

  • A fantasy Western with heart and magic!
This was a fantasy Western in which a town full of rogue magic users (and those that love them) face off against the Salt-Iron Confederation who seek to control all mages and use them for their own purposes. Our Hero is Blaise, a young man on the run who searches for his family while striving to control his own magical talent: he is a Breaker, with a talent for destroying things at a touch. He'd much rather be baking. There's a host of side-characters that really stand out: Wildfire Jack, who's a little haunted and a LOT angry (but I came to really root for the guy); Clover, the wise bovine tavern owner (and my personal favorite character); and Emrys, a Pegasus who has bonded with Blaise. Honestly, the highlight for me was the Pegasi -- They are beautiful and intelligent, sassy and powerful, (and they can talk!) and I wish I could form a bond with one, too, because they seem like amazing companions (and it would make getting to work a lot easier...) Highly recommended for those looking for some excellent-world-building, a found family feel, a lot of heart and a lot of action. ... show more

  • did not finish: needed an editor
DNF at 48%, because no. That was a dorky thing to do. (Again.) This has such potential. But the manuscript did not get the edit passes it needed to keep the actions logical. I'm far too experienced a reader to let that pass. On top of that, it suffers from soggy middle syndrome, where it's too easy for a writer to get bogged down in details this reader just doesn't care about. Something potentially dangerous happens, finally... but there's no tension. That's my cue. ... show more
