  • This series continues to get better and better!
There is a reason the Lux Series is my favorite series, and it is because each book just gets better and better. The plot continues to expand and you just never know who to trust. Jennifer L. Armentrout has created a world that it is so easy to get lost in. I tried to savor this book and make it last, but I just couldn’t. I devoured it and the other book I was reading was immediately put on hold. Our main gal Katy is such a great heroine. I love her attitude, personality, snark, and her strength. Also, we cannot forget that she is a book nerd and I really do love that she is a blogger. I know some people don’t like this, but I personally love it. My favorite thing about Katy is that it is always clear why she makes the choices she makes. I never have that moment where I’m ready to smack the heroine because she is making a clearly dumb decision. Even if I don’t agree with the decision, I always understand where she is coming from. Daemon Black is my all-time favorite book boyfriend. I absolutely love his infuriating personality. If you thought you loved Daemon after Onyx, well just wait, he somehow got even better in Opal which just proves that miracles do happen. There were so many moments where I just wanted to melt into a puddle of goo. My heart, on numerous occasions, melted into that stuff inside gushers. I really enjoyed getting to see Daemon’s sweet and romantic side. However, his egotistical and sarcastic personality was still there. I really liked that he was still his jerk-face self most of the time. Opal was great because we finally get to see Daemon and Katy together as a couple. I enjoyed watching Daemon chase Katy in Onyx, but I absolutely adored watching them as a couple in Opal. They really are stronger together and luckily the angst between the two is limited in a pretty much nonexistent way. The two of them have some incredibly sweet moments that I just don’t have words for. However, they still argue a lot because they are Daemon and Katy and that is what they do. I really loved that they still argued because it is their “thing.” It would not have made sense for them to all of a sudden get along all the time simply because they are a couple. Moving on to Dee. I really missed the old Dee with her vivacious lively personality in this book. Actually, I was very upset with her for a lot of the book. I understand that she is grieving and my heart breaks for her, but I disagreed with her blaming Katy for it. Maybe I just get defensive when it comes to Katy, but I felt like she was putting blame in the wrong place, because in the end it was her and Adam's choice to go into that house. Yes, other events led to that moment and maybe it wouldn’t have been necessary to go in had Katy acted differently, but the last and final choice was on them. Part of me felt as if Dee was trying to ignore this fact and not blame herself. So can you tell I loved this book? Opal was just an amazing ride from beginning to end. Like I said before, I tried to make this book last, but I couldn’t. Once I started reading, I simply could not stop. I needed to know what was going to happen! And – oh my – there are just so many twists and turns along the way. It is so hard to know who to trust and there is just so much that could go wrong. I honestly didn’t see any of the events coming. Not because they were particularly hard to guess, because looking back I’m all “damn I should have seem that coming”, but because as I was reading I was so absorbed in the story that I just didn’t have time to speculate. I didn’t want to pause long enough to try and guess the outcome. Then you get to then ending and you feel as if your heart has been ripped out of your chest, stomped on, put through a grinder, gnawed on by a zombie, and then stuffed back in your chest. I mean this in a good way of course. The ending is so emotional and it leaves you breathless and desperate for more pages. It is an evil evil cliffhanger. If you thought Deity was bad, well then HAHAHAHA. All in all, Opal is a great addition to my favorite series. I have still yet to be disappointed by any JLA book. ... show more

  • So addictive.
Format: Paperback
At A Glance Wow, Opal is like a kick in the teeth, in a good way. Even with the slow parts, I was left breathless by the end. The Good I never really fangirled over this series like some people, but I really do love this story. Armentrout may not be the best writer in the world, but she can tell one hell of a story. The Lux series is like my guilty pleasure. Or I should say Daemon is my guilty pleasure? I just want to eat him up. Mmmm. Opal starts off where Onyx ended. The gang has experienced some tragedy and they are all trying to recover, but there is still some business to take care of. I liked the action and heart-clenching moments in this book. I was really freaked out in some parts. Armentrout puts her characters through hell, and that's the way I like it. Katy is growing up so much. She is becoming her own woman. She has her cool alien powers that are really turning her into a kickass chick. She is learning from her mistakes and learning how to ask for help and let people in. I hope we see her character mature even more. Daemon, my Daemon. We see a whole new side of Daemon. This Daemon is...wait for it...romantic. Yup, you heard right. Our new Daemon is sweet, caring, but with still enough snark to make us melt like we did the books before. He is so much more mature, just like Katy. He has a lot to deal with in this book, but he handles everything so well. I love this new Daemon. This book will blow you away in a lot of ways. The plot is serious and dark with sprinkles of humor and fun. I think this is the best book in the series so far. Worst/Best cliffhanger ever. You haven't seen a REAL cliffhanger until you've read the ending to Opal. I wanted to throw up, punch someone, and rip my book apart. But, damn, that was pretty effing amazing. No way you can stop yourself from reading the fourth book of this series after that. The Bad There was waaaay too much downtime in this book. The beginning was slow and a lot of the time the characters are either waiting around or plotting to do something. I hate the waiting game. So boring. The worst part was that our group let's themselves be put in bad positions because of this certain person they know they can't trust and should have killed a long time ago. I just don't get why this group, who seem intelligent, don't see what is going to happen when they let people into the group who are obviously devious. I can't stand the stupid decision making in Opal. The Snuggly Hell's yeah. Lots of steamy scenes to enjoy in Opal. Nothing too sexy since it's YA, but still blush worthy. I loved seeing Daemon and Katy as a real couple. They are closer than ever. And Daemon is definitely bringing on the romance. *Swoon* Final Thoughts I can't wait to read Origin, the fourth book of the series, especially with how Opal ended. I love how the characters are growing and the story is moving along. I expect it to get even better from here. Very recommended. Quotes “I love you, Katy. Always have. Always will.” “A slow, wry smile teased Daemon’s lips. "Simmer down, Kitten, before I have to get you a ball of yarn to play with." Annoyance flared deep inside me. "Don’t start with me, jerk-face.” “You haven't been smiling much. I missed it, so I decided to reward you for doing it." "Reward me?" I laughed. "God, only you would think kissing someone is a reward." "You know it is. My lips change lives, baby.” “He…he kisses like he’s dying of thirst, and I’m water.” I smacked my hands over my hot face. “I can’t believe I just said that out loud.” Lesa giggled. “Sounds like one of those romance books you read.” “It does.” I started giggling. “But, oh Lordie Lord, it’s true. I’m like a puddle of mush when he kisses me. It’s embarrassing. I’m so, like, ‘Thank you, can I have another?’ Sad.” “There was a pause, then his lips stretched into a smile. "You're right." Hell froze over. Pigs were flying. "Come again?" "You're right. I should have checked in at some point. I'm sorry." The world was flat. I didn't know what to say. According to Daemon, he was right about 99 percent of the time. Wow.” ... show more

  • Glowing Eyes, Godzilla, Man-Candy, and Snow-Angels
Okay guys, this series has been added to my list of all-time favorites. I have loved all that has come out so far. The Bad I'm going to start with the bad this time, because there is simply too much good to get through. I was upset by the changes in Dee and Katy's relationship. "This wasn't my best friend. And then it hit me. Dee wasn't my best friend anymore. God, realizing that seemed more important than anything else that was going on. Yeah, that was stupid when the big picture was called into play, but Dee was important..." Dee had less page time in Onyx and I missed her. In this one, their relationship was in shambles and the Dee that I loved in Obsidian was no longer present. Due to the circumstances, I understand that it is this way for a reason but I miss the fervor and positive energy that she brought. The Good I LOVE how Armentrout references the fact that this is not a book IN the book. "No. You don't get it." He turned to me, furious. "This isn't a paranormal fantasty or whatever the hell it is you read. There is no set plot or clear idea of where any of this is going. The enemies aren't obvious. There are no guaranteed happy endings and you - " He lowered his head so we were eye level. "You are not a superhero, no matter what the hell you can do." Too funny. Then there is all the language that I absolutely adore. She uses quirky phrases that I use in my everyday life and you don't see too often in books, like "Sweet Baby Jesus" and "Total Fail". Katy has been through a lot in the last two books, and this one was no exception. She is growing at a good rate character wise and her outlook on situations is changing. She is no longer a black and white person, but definitely seeing the shades of gray now and I can tell that in the more complex decision making that is shown. I appreciate how very protective she is of the ones she cares about even if she makes the wrong decisions sometimes in how to handle things. She is becoming more cooperative and realizing that she has to trust other people and open up more in order to stop being such a hindrance. Daemon is still the unpolished and conceited alien that I loved in the other two books, but he is getting deeper as well. He is admitting (at times) when he is wrong and allowing circumstances around him to not always be in his control even if it physically hurts him to not be protecting everyone. I was introduced to some new characters that I can't really describe without giving things away, but I will say that with everything that has been going on, I never know who to trust and I enjoy that suspense. "And suddenly is struck me. This was my life - all of this craziness. The ups and downs, the near-death moments and those far worse, the lies and the fact I probably wouldn't be able to trust anyone who befriended me without worrying if they were an implant. And hell, how could I really befriend anyone normal? Like Daemon in the beginning - he'd stayed away and wanted Dee to do the same so I wouldn't be caught in their world. It would be the same with anyone I met. My life wasn't my own. Every moment was like waiting for the other shoe to drop." The Romance I don't know if I have ever really liked a couple as much as I do Daemon and Kat. That is all. Conclusion This was a great third installment to this series. The story is progressing naturally and is very entertaining to follow. There are plenty of conflicts to satisfy the need for overcoming obstacles and it is well balanced with those funny side junctures that make me fall in love with the characters. I can't say much about the ending except - WHY?? I know the wait for Origin will be very hard. I most certainly recommend this book. ... show more

  • Join the Daemon Invasion!
Format: Paperback
This review has major spoilers, so skip over those parts if you don't want to ruin anything.... This book was freaking AMAZING!!!! Everything about it was superb, spectacular, and just utterly captivating. I loved every single minute of this book, and am even more excited for the next one. Opal starts right where we left off last time, and jumps right into the action. I wasn't sure how Ms. Armentrout would manage to blow my mind even more after Onyx, but holy alien babies, she did. Her writing is even more amazing, and the story is at its finest. Let's start off with the characters....Katy is awesome. She is dealing with the aftermath of her kidnapping, and is forever changed. The beauty of this story is that Kat has shown true growth over such a short period of time. Gone is the Katy that was a shy, bookworm. Katy is now a badass hybrid that doesn't take anything from anyone. However, she hasn't lost her caring, vulnerable side. She still has to deal with the guilt of killing people, and let's just say the death toll in this book is high. I loved reading how strong Katy has become because it truly showcases the greatness of this series. Daemon...there are no words to describe the absolute perfectness of Daemon. Sure, he isn't as cocky or arrogant in this book, but is that a bad thing? Uh...NOPE! Katy has changed him in many ways, and one of those ways is bringing out that soft side that our loveable bad boy has. He still has his hilarious moments where he's kind of an arrogant guy, but that made this book even better. Let's just say, I want my own Daemon. Every single moment with Katy and Daemon was sheer bliss. I loved the cute moments, the scary moments, and everything in between. *SPOILER* They do finally have sex in this one, but it is so beautifully written, and is not graphic at all. JLA knows her stuff haha *END SPOILER* Dee is permanently scarred by Andrew's death, and leans on some unexpected people, and [her relationship with Katy is basically broken. By the end of the book, there is some reconciliation, and hope for the future, but I can totally understand where Dee is coming from. However, I miss the old Dee, and want her back! *SPOILER* Some other people make reappearances in this book [*cough*Will and Blake*cough*, and there are some shocking repercussions. I knew something was up with a certain someone, and even though I was hoping for the best, sadly I was proven right. *END SPOILER* Beware...there is a MAJOR cliffhanger. Actually, it's not even a cliff, it's a mountain. And if there's something bigger than a mountain, it's that. This is the mother of all cliffhangers, and all I can say is NOOOOOOOO!!! WHY???!!! How can you do this to us Ms. Armentrout? I actually threw my book after I read the ending. I scrambled because I had to be missing pages. I thought, Surely, this CANNOT be the ending?! But, it is. And, I am eagerly awaiting the next book. Ms. Armentrout has weaved a magnificent tale that grabs you and never lets you go. Pick this up immediately! 5+++++++++ alien babies ... show more

  • Another Sexy Installment in the Lux Series
4.5 stars Quote: "A slow, wry smile teased Daemon's lips. "Simmer down, Kitten, before I have to get you a ball of yarn to play with." Annoyance flared deep inside me. "Don't start with me, jerk-face." What can I say about Opal that hasn't already been said by other reviewers? It's just as wonderful, tension-filled, and sexy (for a YA) as the previous books in the series. Armentrout continues writing teens that feel real, somehow managing to keep everyone feeling their age but still imparting some serious hotness into the mix. Daemon and Katy are full on 'together' in Opal and I admit, a tiny bit of their sexy love/hate angst is gone now. But really, a lot of it is still there because they continue to madden and frustrate each other to no end. Plus readers now get the added bonus of tons of luscious make out scenes and some adorable cuddling moments. Daemon lovers will really love seeing his softer side in this one and these scenes make him even more swoon worthy. Quote: "He...he kisses like he's dying of thirst, and I'm water." I smacked my hands over my hot face. "I can't believe I just said that out loud." Lesa giggled. "Sounds like one of those romance books you read." "It does." I started giggling. "But, oh Lordie Lord, it's true. I'm like a puddle of mush when he kisses me. It's embarrassing. I'm so, like, `Thank you, can I have another?' Sad." Katy remains one of my favorite young adult heroines due to her lack of stupidity. She is likable and its believable that someone like Daemon would be into her. The fact that she is a book blogger and Armentrout gives us many scenes where Katy is talking about blogging or writing book reviews just makes me love her even more. She has a lot going on - she's dealing with her new abilities, her relationship with Daemon, and having a lot of guilt about everything that happened at the end of Onyx. There are a lot of events that take place in Opal that Katy must come to terms with as well and even though most of the time these events break her down she comes out stronger by the end. That's one of the things I like about her. Dee is pretty broken in the aftermath of what happened to Adam, and her and Katy's friendship is pretty non-existent here. For most of the book I was just hoping that Dee would get 'fixed' before the story's end. In Opal the characters are dealing with the return of a sullen Dawson, Daemon and Dee's long lost brother, as well as the return of another character that I will leave you to figure out for yourself. The gang decides they must rescue Dawson's human girlfriend from the DOD facility she's being kept at and the preparing for this mission is the basis for much of the plot. The whole time I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak. I knew this one would end on a cliff hanger...and boy does it! I'm highly anticipating the next book in this series, of course. There were some new characters introduced that I'm curious to read more about and I'm definitely wondering how the cliff hanger will be resolved! Recommended for fans of: YA paranormal books, love/hate romantic relationships, name calling, and sexy and cocky guys with a secret softer side. ... show more

  • Need the next book!
Review: The third book of the series is a solid addition, but I’m also feelings some cons becoming bigger stones in my shoe. I was really fond of the relationship between Daemon and Katy, they continued being sweet, snarky and sexy, they’ve come a long way since book one. It’s enjoyable to follow their development both together and individually. I was glad that they hadn’t lost the spark and sass towards each other being a couple. In regards to plot, several interesting issues came up, some out of the blue, which I rather liked, and which I can’t wait to get more information about or explanations to what’s actually going on. If you think about it, the focus has always been on the main couple and not much has been revealed about the alien, arum and DOD issues. We don’t really know much of who is actually pulling the strings, what is the actual grand goal of the whole conflict, who or what is the main enemy, where is the story going, etc and I really like the obscurity around the plot, it makes finally finding out a lot more satisfying and the journey there unpredictable. I do, however, foresee some huge twists along the way and I’m sure they’re whopping and will leave me questioning everything revealed till then. I also actually liked the ending and that it was a cliffhanger, I guess it just worked well and was an abrupt and emotional end to an overall, for me, slow book. Negative: Maybe it’s just me but nothing much happened, I mean, stuff obviously happened, there was some decent action, but most of the time I felt the story drag and some annoying topics kept being brought up and circulated: Daemon and Katy’s hostility towards Blake (really, I know that you hate each other, but the constant whining towards Blake got old soon), Dee treating Katy as the root of all evil, them visiting that new characters (why are always the girls that have to dress up sexy and guys not, I would have loved to see Daemon in something more revealing), a restless Dawson, etc. I can’t recall reading any other romance YA book with more than three books, so maybe the dragging issue isn’t uncommon with middle books of a five installment or more series. It took me months to finish this one, because it was at times hard to gather the motivation! Characters: Katy – Even though I love her with Daemon and she has grown a lot, she has made some unfortunate and stupid decisions. In this book she kind of tries to right the wrong, but this brings about another issue I had with her. Why was she insisting on being a part of everything, I understand that she wanted to help, make up for her errors and protect the ones she cares about, but she was somewhat too reckless with herself. Otherwise, Katy’s still a decent heroine, although I was hoping she would have time to focus on her book blog a bit more too, it was fun to read about her hobby and how Daemon always commented her posts. Daemon – From an arrogant douche in the first book we now have an excellent boyfriend who can’t do no wrong or at least much. He’s still the same – cocky, swoony and a bad boy, but all that combined with Katy makes for a sweet and spicy romance. Overall: The series remains good and I will read it till the end. Still, some aspects started to annoy me too much, the good outweighs the bad luckily, so bring on the next book! ... show more

  • Great third book in the Lux series! (But maybe a bit too much making out)
Format: Paperback
[...] It's kind of amazing how books provide an escape route from hectic everyday life. I've had mock exams the past couple of weeks, and each and every day was dedicated to studying and revising and more studying! Luckily, I had "Opal", the third book in the "Lux" series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, to keep me company when the going got tough. Not to mention that books sometime remind you that your normal life can't possibly be worse than life-risking scenarios involving aliens and seedy government agents. Now that Daemon's finally confessed his feelings for her, shedding his arrogant, condescending facade to show Katy how he really feels about her (or at least for a few hours a day), things should be okay for Katy. But instead, her mom's boyfriend Will has run away after kidnapping her to force Daemon to heal him, and Blake, her 'friend' who also tried to kill her, has also disappeared. Not to mention Dawson's reappeared after being held captive by the Department of Defense. Now, Katy and her friends are closer to discovering the truth, putting them in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids: Daedalus. One thing that I really like about the "Lux" series is Katy's narrative voice. It's so conversational, it's like she's really talking to you. She's funny and bookish, and I love the fact that she's a book blogger! I remember finding out that she reviews books in "Obsidian", the first installment of the series, I was a little surprised because I've never encountered a character who's a book blogger. In a way, it's a little jarring because it's kind of Inception-like... But I digress. Katy's a great heroine to follow throughout the story because she's so real and down-to-earth. I also thank the literary lords that she's not one of those whiny, weak female protagonists, which seem to appear in YA paranormals from time to time. Instead, Katy's strong and determined, even a little stubborn sometimes, and she's a really likable character. I do have to admit that a good quarter of the book consisted of Katy and Daemon making out. While it's exciting to have a few steamy scenes sprinkled here and there, I felt like there was a little too much in "Opal". Yeah, I get that Daemon's super hot and saucy, and hormones are up and running strong and high, but a little more moderation would've been nicer. That being said, Katy and Daemon's relationship is also so unbelievably sweet! Daemon still has his characteristic cockiness and wit, but at the same time, he also shows his vulnerability and true feelings for Katy. I almost died of envy when I read about Daemon's little post-prom surprise date he set up for Katy. Which brings me to the ending. I definitely don't want to give anything away, but THE ENDING!!! I just knew something like that was going to happen--I just hope in the next book it won't turn out that predictable story of...well you'll see. Other than the ending, the storyline remained pretty engaging throughout, even though the main focus, I think, was on the developments of the different relationships between all of the characters. Event-wise, I don't think there was too much that really happened. There were maybe around five main 'big plot points', but other than that, it was really about the various characters...and Katy and Daemon making out. Overall, "Opal" is a great third installment to the "Lux" series, with a witty, likable narrative voice and an engaging storyline...not to mention lots of kissing. I'd definitely check it out if you've read the first two books in the series, or like unique YA paranormals that don't involve werewolves or vampires. Rating: 4/5 ... show more

  • You will love it... but WHAT A CLIFFHANGER!!
What can I say but OMG!!! So much happened in Opal that I found it extremely hard to put the book down. There were a lot of loose ends that were tied up, but the book was left on a cliffhanger and I really want to know what happens now!!!! Opal continues on not long after Onyx left off, with Dawson back and he is still distant from his siblings. Katy and Daemon are still together, but Dee is keeping her distance from Katy as she blames her for what happened to Adam. Blake returns to town and has put an offer to the aliens to help them free Beth for Dawson so he can also free his Luxen friend Chris. They all need to put their personal feelings aside to work with Blake to achieve their goal of freeing Beth so that Dawson won't go rouge. In Opal, I enjoyed the building relationship between Daemon and Katy. As they are officially together now, they deal with their issues like normal couples. They may disagree sometimes, but they are able to talk it out and come to a compromise. The bond they have is strong and their relationship is becoming quite intense as they start to move way past first base, it is beautiful even with the issues they have and the crazy world they live in, they are able to find time for one another. I still like how Katy is into blogging and reviewing books!! As it is something we both have in common, I think I connect with her better. Every time something happens to her laptop my heart breaks along with hers, as I don't know what I'd do without mine!! Everytime Daemon takes an interest in her book passion, my heart just melts..... But he is even able to bring it up in an argument, so she understands his point better. "No. You don't get it." He turned to me, furious. "This isn't a paranormal fantasy or whatever the hell it is you read. There is no set plot or clear idea of where any of this is going. The enemies aren't obvious. There are no guaranteed happy endings and you--" He lowered his head so we were eye level. "You are not a superhero, no matter what the hell you can do." Wow. He'd really been stalking my blog. But not the point. "I know this isn't a book, Daemon. I'm not stupid." Katy was awesome in Opal. She was able to bring Dawson out of his shell and open up to his family once again. They formed a little bond and I liked how she was able to build this friendship. I think Daemon fell even more in love with Katy for doing that, if it was possible for him to love her anymore. On the other hand Katy had to work on her friendship with Dee because she kept Dee in the dark about a lot of things and had to build up that trust again. I thought it was believable because they didn't just kiss and make up immediately. The plot was great, with Katy and the alien crew having to put their feelings aside to work with Blake, who I still didn't trust and neither did the others. I was a little pissed that he came back myself, as we all know Blake equals trouble, but without his contacts, they wouldn't be able to get as far as they did. Opal was a very intense read but swoon worthy too!! Moving lightning fast, Daemon was in front of me before I could say another word, cupping my cheeks, tilting my head back as he lowered his. Lips brushed against mine, sending a shiver down my spine. The initial touch was feather soft, heartbreakingly tender. Then the contact evolved with the second sweep of his lips and mine parted, welcoming him. There is plenty of action, lots of fighting and more death.
