  • A Worthy Successor to the Series 7
Style: .9477cc
I have been using a Braun Series 7 razor for over a decade and have had two of them. The Series 7 was the first electric razor to get me away from shaving with a blade, and I have been generally happy with it. Based on several reviews, I decided to give the Series 9 a try. It is an improvement over the Series 7 in just about every way. I have waited several weeks before writing this, since a new shaving head always feels a little better than an older one. Nevertheless, the Series 9 is significantly better at shaving, which is its primary purpose. It shaves more easily. A close shave requires less pressure. It does a much better job of lifting difficult hairs, such as at the front of the neck. The shave is more comfortable. Considering that the Series 7 was very good, I am impressed. As for other factors, the Series 9 is lighter than the Series 7, which surprised me since they are the same size. The primary displays about battery life and status of hygiene, which are on the base of the Series 7 shaver, have been moved to the cleaning station, which is an entirely new design. The only indicators on the razor are a bar graph for battery life (it only makes numbers when there are nine or fewer minutes of charge remaining) and a few icons that light up, but do not give a status indication. The trimmer is in back and slides up instead of popping out from the front. My first Series 7 trimmer broke, and I have been babying the second one. The Series 9 design is more robust. One thing that drove me crazy about the Series 7 cleaning station is that it allowed the cleaning solution to come into contact with the body of the shaver, and, over time, the cleaning solution dissolved the finish. The new cleaning station seems to have rubber dams to prevent that from happening, but only time will tell. It took a few years to become a problem with the old one. The new cleaning station also uses a fan to dry the shaver while the old one did not. The battery life is excellent, although the Series 7 was also good. I was intrigued by the travel case, which contains a battery that can re-charge the shaver while on the road. The travel case is surprisingly big and heavy. It does offer superb protection while traveling. I have thrown it into checked luggage with no problem. My first Series 7 came with a clear plastic case that could pop open in a suitcase. The second Series 7 came with a hardened cloth case, that did not offer much protection. There is a window in the Series 9 travel case that allows you to see the LED on the shaver inside. The shaver and the travel case charge using the same wall plug. The shaver end is the same as the Series 7, but the part that plugs into the wall is considerably smaller, which is a good thing. The cord is no longer coiled. I charge the travel case with my old Series 7 plug without issue. Overall, the shaving experience justifies the price, which is saying something considering how expensive the system is. I am happy with the Series 9, cleaning station, and travel case combo. ... show more

  • Brilliantly Engineered, One Annoying Flaw...
Style: .9477cc
OVERVIEW This razor is truly the Rolls Royce of electric, wet/dry razors, and if it isn't, it'll do until the next shaving marvel comes to Amazon. The speed and smoothness with which the blades cut is impressive, wet and dry. SHORTER HAIR With shorter beard/mustache hair, there is literally no tugging, and it glides like warm butter over your face. And I could not find pesky hangers-on after a shave. LONGER HAIR With longer hair, there is some minor pulling under the chin and front of the neck, I've found, in the up direction, but in the down not at all. The problem is that in order to get the longer hairs off your neck and chin, one must move against them, and not with them, to cut them. This does create some painful pulling now and then. But this is more a cautionary note, than a critique. Don't let your beard/mustache get too long and this razor is silky across your face. Also with longer hair, I do notice that I need to come at some lingering hairs from every imaginary geometry/angle. But again, that's more a common characteristic of electric razors cutting longer hair, more than it is a failure of this particular product. CLEANING THE THING The alcohol-based cleaning unit is also very cool and does a great job making your razor like new between uses. Given I am personally rather obsessive about cleaning my razors, I find this cleaning apparatus a refreshing alternative to huffing and puffing into the blades and mating components after every use. My OCD won't allow me to avoid blowing into it before I put it into its cleaning bath, but that's just my pathology and again, not a poor reflection of the razor. In short, the cleaning device functions pretty much paint-by-numbers. CLEAN-UP AFTERWARDS The surprising engineering flaw in this razor's design is the absolute confetti gun of cut hairs that fly everywhere and land on every surface around you. Your shirt, chest, forearms, hands, counters, sink, faucet, floor, behind the faucet (yay!) and in every other impossible-to-reach crevice in the razor's menacing orbit. This stunned me inasmuch as my $70 Braun doesn't do this at all. After I shave, especially when I've let my beard grow a bit, I spend the next 10-15 minutes removing air from my body, clothing, floor, and the entire shaving area of my bathroom's sink/vanity. Is this a hardship? No. First-world problems all, but if you're going to spend $400 on the super-dooper razor that it purports to be, and in all but one way is, I think you'd want to know about its benefits, features and yes, its shortcomings too. This is definitely a shortcoming and a big hassle if you're pressed for time. You will clean up after using this razor and it does not matter long long or short your hairs are. They will spew everywhere. WOULD I BUY IT AGAIN? Yep! I'll clean up after the mess it creates and treat it as a trade-off. Such as life. ;) ... show more
