Borderlands 4, developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K, is the latest mainline installment in the Borderlands series. It launched on September 12, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S; Nintendo Switch 2 got it a bit later. It stays true to its looter-shooter roots: tons of weapons, co-op action, over-the-top enemies, and the signature humor. But it also tries to evolve; new movement tools (grappling hooks, double jump etc.), more seamless world traversal, a more open feel, etc. What works well: 1. Gunplay and combat feel: Critics seem to agree that Borderlands 4 delivers satisfying, punchy shooting. The looting, weapons variety, and action are generally strong. 2. Improvements over Borderlands 3: The game addresses many complaints from the previous entry. The balancing of comedic tone vs narrative, streamlining of flow, more memorable set-pieces, and more consistent pacing are cited as strong points. 3. Visuals, world design, traversal: The addition of more movement options (grappling hook, double jumping, etc.), more open/seamless zones, better verticality, etc., is a plus. These contribute to a more dynamic feel. 4. Soundtrack and atmosphere: Music contributions from various artists, and the general atmosphere of the new planet (Kairos) are praised. The humor (even if imperfect) is nostalgic in parts and works best in smaller doses. What holds it back: 1. Performance issues, especially on PC: This is probably the biggest sticking point. Many users, and even on high-end hardware, report low frame rates, frequent stuttering, crashes, and other optimization problems. An RTX 5090 struggling, text pop-in, etc., have come up in several reports. 2. Bullet-sponge bosses & pacing in late game: Some of the larger fights drag on; certain bosses have excessive health, multiple forms, which can make encounters feel more tedious than exciting. The final act is said to ramp up difficulty sharply, and that can hurt momentum. 3. Narrative / identity issues: While many improvements are made, there are critics who feel Borderlands 4 sometimes overcorrects; sacrificing some of the quirks that made the earlier games distinct in an attempt to tone down what was criticized in 3. The writing/dialogue still gets mixed reviews. 4. Technical demands & expectations: The hardware needs are steep. Even players with very strong rigs find themselves turning down settings. For those with mid- or lower-spec PCs, the experience might be frustrating. Verdict: Overall, Borderlands 4 is a solid return for the series. For fans who want big, chaotic, co-op gun fun, it's probably worth it, even more so if you like exploration with freer movement and more varied traversal. It moves the series forward in meaningful ways. This game is shaping up to be one of the best in the Borderlands series. Despite some technical hiccups, the gameplay is great. Lots of gun and build variety already. I like the licensed parts, and picking up epics with combos like Torgue sticky, Atlas trackers and Vladof barrels makes some combos rival even the better legendaries. The open world map is cool too, although I seriously miss the mini-map. This is probably my biggest complaint. Overall, if you’re not so stuck on 2 that you’re blinded by nostalgia, this will be the best BL in the series once they complete the roadmap. ... show more

Best 2K game of all time!!! The story is really good in my opinion. Much better than BL3. I beat the game with Amos and I’m looking forward to playing with the other characters. The post game content is lots of fun too! Looking forward to the DLCs dropping!!!
