The BOOX Palma can be an odd device to have, particularly if you’re more used to iOS, like me. It has its quirks. For instance, I’ve got no way to play my downloaded, saved music from Pandora with the screensaver on. I don’t like turning off the auto-sleep, but unless BOOX has some way to get around that, then I’m stuck leaving the auto-sleep off, and I guess I’ll wear down the battery that much more because the BOOX can’t put its own display to sleep and play music from an app at the same time. However, I have to say: I’ve done so much more reading with the Palma than I have with my favorite e-ink reader, the Kindle Scribe. That alone makes this device worth it for me, because that’s why I bought this device in the first place. Now there’s no excuse to not read the books I’ve got. And I guess books don’t seem as intimidating to read when I’m reading them on a much smaller screen. I’ve got my Audible books saved to my Palma, along with some music and comedy albums from Pandora. I’ve even got a document scanner now, thanks to the Palma’s camera. It’s great. I really like having an e-reader in my pocket. I’ve quickly discovered that given the choice between reading a book on the Palma vs doomscrolling on my phone, or getting distracted by all the cool flashy things on it, I’d rather read on the Palma and get some quiet time for myself. Now all I wish is that either Amazon or BOOX would ship their portfolio case for the Palma from their US warehouse—because the shipping from BOOX’s Chinese warehouse is ridiculous. A $15 portfolio case plus $45 shipping from overseas…NO THANKS. And since I love PopSockets so much: I wouldn’t mind having a PopSocket for the Palma, to make it easier to hold onto. ... show more

    • Great Device with Problematic Display and Quirks

Overall, very happy with the snappiness of the device, but I have experienced so many odd issues with this. The most frustration of which is probably when the device is suddenly unresponsive with no real tells or gives. At a moment's notice, the device will suddenly be unable to turn off or respond to any input and it is a bit of a guess whenever it would do anything again. Additionally, there is some severe vertical banding in HD mode whenever you are looking at any content that isn't just purely text on a solid white or black background. It is incredibly off-putting to have this sort of quirk on a device of this price. I've been gaslit by their team into believing that whatever app I am using is the problem, but this issue has occurred on both Palma devices I have used. Prepare to be disappointed if you ever decide to read manga or comics on this. Even if you don't, you'll definitely see the banding if you use any sort of non-simple image as your background or screensaver. Also, don't bother with the TPU case. It is absolutely horrid! The tactility of the side buttons is severely compromised if you decide to use the case. It is super uncomfortable to be pushing at the side buttons and not getting any sort of tactile feedback. I had to cut out the volume rocker portion of the case just to be able to have any sort of tactility. Hopefully they can address some of these major issues since I cannot recommend this for avid users if the only thing you can do on it is read plain text on a solid white background. A lot of people are leaving reviews explaining a lot of things they should've known when spending $280 on an E-ink device. This is a great device for reading. It handles articles great. The main social media on mine is Reddit which it handles great. I have sent texts and made calls (Facebook messenger) and I didn't have any problems. My purpose for this device is to separate myself from my phone when I get home but not be completely unavailable. I definitely read my books more instead of consuming YouTube, Instagram, Facebook etc. I credit that to the specific form factor of this device. I own a Kindle Oasis but it can't do what I'm using the Palma to accomplish. Know what you are buying please. Watch the reviews all over YouTube. ... show more

Overall, very nice device. Screen is crisp and clear. Love the options for refresh and warmth of backlight. Android Store is an awesome addition. We'll see how durability and power / charging management go, but the device doesn't initially feel as fragile as some have communicated. Looking forward to when I can get a quality folio case made for the Palma. ... show more
