I have no experience with gardening but have been wanting to get into it. Thought this might be a good way to tell if I have the patience for it and give me a winter project. It's all pretty easy to use for the most part and you can get it all set up quickly. I haven't used the timer as I know that if I do, I'll forget the sprouts exist, so I'm trying to be more hands on with that. All the parts feel sturdy.

These trays with lighting did work to sprout my marigold seeds, but the lights weren’t bright enough to bring robust plants. The seeds I planted earlier, (3rd week of March) which were relying on the seed starter light for a longer period of time (before it was warm enough to move them outdoors to natural sun) never flowered and had skinny floppy stems, trying to reach the light. Seeds I planted early April which I was able to start bringing outside by May1 for sun thrived much better and are strong plants with many flowers almost ready to bloom. So I suggest to mainly use these for first 3-4 weeks of growth and then you’ll need to give them real sunshine!

This is a really really good way to get started indoors before the season. Enough to get a good part started and easy to remove when you repot with the silicone bases. Especially if you're using grow tents, these will save you room in your grow area and able to move them into the tent when they're ready for the brighter light. This way i don't have to lower my light settings and risk a deficiency or even accidentally flipping it to flower. The included lights are good enough to germinate and sustain it until around 18-21 days. I can use completely blank soil without nutrients as it's only using its cotyledons up until this point. They have enough time to get a little rootbound, which i like, and they take off better once I put them in some slightly hot soil that started cooking the day I popped the seeds. I go straight from these into 3-5 gallon pots but might be a little more easy to manage your water if you go into an intermediate pot if you're really trying to maximize your vegetative stage. Comes with a few accessories that were no big deal but the kit itself is a really good product. Overall a value for a product with a lot of utility for serious or casual growers.

I do a lot of seed starting. I thought I'd give this set a try. It does a few things differently than your standard old fashioned trays. Likes: - The embedded lights work really well and light up uniformly - The soft pots are new to me and I like the concept - It has humidity control - The built in timer can be handy, but the instructions are unclear as to how it works. - Compact and clean, it will fit on your desk nicely - A great small set for the novice. Good way to get your kids interested in growing plants. Dislikes: - If you use an external timer, it won't work after the first day. Once power is taken away, it cannot be restarted except by somebody pressing the button. I sometimes like my trays to be on auto-control for a few days. EDIT: However, the built in timer works well. I set it for 12 hours and it creates an on/off pattern of 12 hours each. It is unclear what the 3, 6 and 18hr settings do. Instructions are lacking here. - The gloves and shovels are just landfill. Maybe good for a complete novice though. I don't knows, we'll find out: - The clear pots. New to me. This should be fun since you can see the roots. I have some concern that light hitting the roots of certain seedlings might change behavior of growth, but we'll see. A little reading says it is OK. Overall I'm happy with this set. The timer thing probably won't bug most people. I just did a fall vegetable planting. I'll update after harvest if I have any concerns. EDIT: upgraded my review to 5 stars from 4 after I realized the built in 12hr timer is perfect for most purposes.
