Features

  • SILKY SMOOTH COLORING! The buttery, smooth tips of these colored pencils practically purr across the page of your favorite adult coloring book or drawing. The soft, wax points lay down color evenly for beginners to fine artists with very little pressure or friction - even on delicate paper. These pencils are water soluble and are not meant to be used as watercolors
  • VIBRANT COLORS WITHOUT DUPLICATES! 48 vivid colors, shades and hues in this set. Colors like Cats Eye, Opal and Saphire and are pre-sharpened ready to pop off the page. Every color pencil is labelled with a clever name and number code on the barrel, and theres a convenient color chart on the bottom the tin packaging.
  • RICH PIGMENTS THAT BLEND AND LAYER LIKE VELVET! These coloring pencils have a wax core which means they blend, shade and layer seamlessly without smudging or strain. The deep, rich pigments result in a creamy, velvet finish and blend beautifully even on black paper.
  • PENCIL CORE DOESNT BREAK WHEN SHARPENED! The soft wax core and tips of these art colored pencils dont crumble and break when sharpened or when pressing down to extract darker shades when blending. This means less sharpening is needed, so the tips of your colored pencils stay sharp longer.
  • COMFORTABLE TO HOLD AND COOL TO DISPLAY! The sleek barrel of these colored pencils is Spider Black, which adds elegance and a touch of cool to your art supplies. The hexagon shape means the pencil is more comfortable in your hand for drawing, needs less pressure for the colors to lay down and best of all, they wont roll off your drawing table.

  • Always amazing
So far, I have gotten all the Black Widow sets, this is an other lovely addition to the color range available. BW pencils are perfect for my style of coloring, I do lots of light layers, slowly building up the color. If you are more of a Prismacolor person, liking to lay one thick layer down and move on, these may not be for you. As with every other BW set, the colors are gorgeous, but his set is particularly delicious, having more pastels and soft colors that the previous sets. It perfectly compliments the range of BW pencils available. On it's own, this set is not complete, lacking the black, white and primary colors, but was designed to fill the gaps in the existing color range. See the photo I uploaded of where these pencils fall in the available BW range (noted by stars). I did not have a single lead break in this set, all were sharpened with an Afmat electric pencil sharpener (highly recommend it!). From previous experience with these pencils, OMS works well on these if you choose to use it. There is very little crumbling as you color, leading to less smudging around where you are putting the color down. Also, I experience much less wax bloom with these pencils than say with Prisma's or Castle Arts. That being said, it is ultimately up to your taste if you will like them. I love the long, drawn out build up of color, but you may not have the patience for it. To help things go a little faster, I routinely base with watercolor markers and it works wonderfully. Hope this is helpful to you, these pencils are incredible, my go to for skin tones. ... show more

  • Gotta get 'em all . . .
This review speaks to the entire range of these pencils to include this particular item: There are five sets of color pencils in the Black Widow line: Monarch (48 ct), Dragon (36 ct), Black Widow (24 ct), Scorpion (24 ct) and Cobra (24 ct) and then an additional two set for skin tones (light and dark). I've spent my evening swatch ALL of them while watching the last 2/3 of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Things I like about these pencils: The cores are hard. Not one of them broke, even after I sharpened them. After primarily using Prismacolors recently, which have notoriously brittle tips, that was incredible. I love the colors - so many greens and and pinks. I enjoy the theming - as the naming of the pencils sort of reflect the theme of the box. For instance, the dragon set has pencils called Serpent, Blue tongue, gold dust, cobblestone and castle. The colors in the Monarch set are more muted - kind of forest-y in color. Things I'm a little "meh" on - Because the cores are so hard, they are a little scratchy in the lay down--they even sound like a graphite pencil. Some colors lay better than others, but you've got to put down several layers to cover the tooth of the paper. Some of the colors are not blended well. For instance, I noticed earlier this evening as a I swatching a blue-green color that you could actually see both blue and green on the swatch. Perhaps it was the blend, or maybe it was because the core was so hard, it didn't blend out in the coloring. Don't know. Will any of that prevent me from using my pencils? Nope. If they come out with a new set, will I buy it? You bet. It's a fun - I would say fantasy-oriented- collection. The pigments are bright, and they're sold at a modest price point. If your adult coloring is casual, I would definitely recommend. ... show more

  • Love these.
Really like the colors. They are creamy and lay down and blend nicely. No trouble with point breakage. One pencil has the writing on backwards which kills my OCD but not a deal breaker. Had a duplicate so I am missing one color.

  • Beautiful completion set to Black Widows
I have all the Black Widow sets except the light skin & have been eagerly awaiting the Monarch set release. I use them exclusively in coloring books. Black Widows are classified as a soft wax pencil. The core is a harder than Prismacolor but softer than other soft wax pencils in the same price point. Not too hard and not too soft, they are just right. With a sharp tip they are hard enough to color small areas of a picture. I prefer them to Prismacolors which to me are too soft & can look too ”crayony” because of their high wax content. Widows go on creamy, blend beautifully but rarely break or have a waxy bloom. Black Widows also have a high level of pigment. Also they have unique colors not found in other brands. As a beginner I love that each Black Widow set does not contain any duplicates. The 48 set of Monarchs does not contain any of the colors found in the 12 pencil skin sets or the 24 pencil sets like the Cobra. Other brands don’t do this. The sets build on each other so that a 48 set contains the previous 24 set. My Widows work on all kinds of paper found in coloring books from the toothy but thin paper found in self published Amazon books to the thicker paper found in the Johanna Basford’s books to the smoother paper found in Kirby Rosane’s. I’m older; Black Widows do not hurt my fingers the way budget brands do. I don’t have to press hard or go over an area repeatedly to get a vivid swath of color. I found these pencils work perfectly with blending pencils (tried both the Prismacolor and the Caran d'ache brands) as well as blending fluids (tried Gamsol mineral spirits). Since both Prismacolors and Black Widows are soft wax pencils they work well together and can be layered and blended with each other. If you own a small set of Prismscolors, the Monarchs makes a great addition to your pencils with all of its pastel colors. I can also layer my Widows over my (Ohuhu) alcohol markers. This works particularly well with Ohuhu’s new pastel markers. The Monarch set does more than just add colors; it completes & compliments the other 5 sets. It contains a number of tints (pastels) that give me the light colors I need for highlights. It also completes the grey’s needed for shading including a good selection of cool & warm greys & much needed blues from pale to dark. I love the bronze pencil and a great new orange (Aztec Gold). This set would pair well with the original Black Widow set. I hope all the original 24 pencil sets are retooled to have the larger core and the end color dip found now in the Skin sets and the Monarch set. The color “dip” on the end of the pencil helped me when I was organizing all my sets by color. For example, it helped me distinguish red-pinks from orange based colors when the tints were so pale it was hard to tell. I found the Black Widow brand a perfect choice for beginners and the Monarch set is perfect choice for those who own other Black Widow sets. It is not a good choice for a stand alone set. The original Black Widow set is best stand alone set. Beginners looking to buy their first pencils should buy both the Monarch and Black Widow sets. ... show more
