Frequently asked questions

Installing the BLACK+DECKER Portable Air Conditioner is straightforward. First, place the unit near a window. Then, attach the included exhaust hose to the back of the air conditioner and connect the other end of the hose to the window adapter kit. Fit the adapter into the window and ensure it’s sealed properly to prevent hot air from entering the room. Finally, plug in the air conditioner, turn it on using the remote control or the onboard buttons, and select your desired settings.

The BLACK+DECKER 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner is designed to efficiently cool a single room up to about 350 square feet in size, depending on room conditions such as ceiling height and sunlight exposure. While it may not be powerful enough to cool multiple rooms simultaneously, its portability allows for easy movement from one room to another, depending on where you need cooling most.

The BLACK+DECKER 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner is designed with energy efficiency in mind. It features an EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) that is compliant with environmental and energy-saving standards. Additionally, using the programmable timer and sleep mode can help reduce power consumption by setting the air conditioner to operate only when needed.

This BLACK+DECKER Portable Air Conditioner features auto-evaporation technology, which means for most conditions, it does not need to be drained as the collected moisture is evaporated out with the exhaust. However, in very humid conditions, the internal tank may fill up. If the unit stops running and 'Full Tank' appears or you notice the unit is not cooling as efficiently, it may need to be drained. Simply turn off the unit, place a shallow pan near the drain outlet at the back or side of the unit, remove the drain plug, and let the water drain out. Once drained, replace the plug and restart the unit.

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The product reviews offer a mixed but generally positive perception of a portable A/C unit, detailing experiences with setup, operation, and effectiveness. Customers highlighted issues such as noise levels and initial operational malfunctions, but also praised the unit's cooling efficiency and features like self-evaporation. The manufacturer's warranty support and replacement service received specific mention, reflecting responsiveness to defective units.

Pros

  • 🌬 Effective cooling performance in appropriate room sizes
  • 🔇 Replacement units operate quietly, improving user comfort
  • 💧 Features like self-evaporating operation reduce maintenance
  • 🔧 Responsive warranty and replacement service for defective units

Cons

  • 🔊 Initial units can be noisy and disrupt sleep or activities
  • 👃 Some units emit an unpleasant smell, likely from manufacturing residues
  • ❄️ Inconsistencies in cooling effectiveness and thermostat accuracy reported
  • 🛠 Installation and operation quirks, including UI confusion and potential for leaks

Should I Buy It?

If you're in need of efficient and effective cooling for a small-to-medium-sized room, this portable A/C unit could be a solid choice, especially considering the manufacturer's willingness to replace defective units. However, its performance may vary, and potential buyers should be prepared for possible operational quirks. If quiet operation and consistency are top priorities, it might be worth exploring other options or ensuring a clear understanding of the warranty and replacement process before purchasing.

  • Worked for it's purpose, loud
Got this due to my central air suddenly not working and a sudden heat wave during Fall. Kept the entire second floor cool, but was loud and made a loud noise with vibration that kept waking me up every time it kicked on. I was going to keep it in case the central air stopped again, but it was hard to get sleep when it kept jolting me awake so I returned it. Seeing the other reviews it seems mine was defective, so I would totally buy it again if this situation happens again. My favorite thing about this product was the flap on the top where the air comes out is adjustable, and you can set it to slowly go up and down to move the cool air around. I wasn't able to test the dehumidifier on it, I have no idea if it really worked or not. One last thing to mention was the power bill, even with it on full blast non-stop for a month, was lower than the central air that only kicks on maybe a few times a day to regulate the air temperature. Tldr: It works and keeps a decent sized area cool, but has a chance to be very loud and vibrate enough to wake you up. Also it's very heavy, be careful! Energy bill lower than with central air on that only kicks in a few times a day. ... show more

  • One unit works perfectly right out of the box!!!!The second unit was used.
I purchased two A/C units and Amazon somehow has combined my two reviews, one good and one bad. My first review: My home A/C is having problems and I submitted an emergency work order to have it fixed. I have two large Old English Sheepdogs with long hair and my indoor temp is over 80 degrees. I managed to keep them semi-comfortable with 5 shop fans...what a stressful experience. I ordered this particular portable A/C primarily because it would arrive within 24 hours and the specs seemed like what I needed for them. I couldn't believe my eyes when I found it delivered at my door at 9:30 am the next morning!!!!!! Wow. It was ordered and delivered within 12 hours. It gets better... I had it setup within 2 hours and it works perfectly!!! My babies have literally fallen asleep and not moved a muscle for an hour. I never write reviews but this A/C and delivery is an exception. I would recommend getting a unit as a backup emergency in case your A/C ever fails. The A/C unit is very impressive too. It is highly quality manufactured and has many options. Although I struggled to pull it from the box, I realized later that the box detaches from the bottom so don't break your back lifting it. It should slide up while the unit is standing on the bottom of the box. I am so happy I ordered this Black and Decker unit!!!! 5 Days later.... This unit has proven so effective (I have a 1200 Square Feet home) that I ordered another one. I hope I have the same luck with the next one as I have with this unit. 3 days later: I just got off the phone with an Amazon Manager. The second unit showed up within 24 hours BUT… it was a used unit and looked like it was literally thrown in the box! Having not opened the box, Amazon gave me $168 discount if I kept it. I checked it out and it was working perfectly with cool air and no oil smell like other reviews. But I had to clean it up b/c whoever used it before me had handprints and dirt all over it. It came without plastic bag over the unit and some parts were broken and it didn’t have the styrofoam protectors for shipment. I decided to take the discount and keep it since I only need it in emergencies and it was working, but after the discount, I still paid over $300 out of pocket. It makes me rethink ordering big purchases from Amazon. I could have got it cheaper from Home Depot (and a new unit), but since my experience from the first unit was so good, I purchased it instead from Amazon. Please believe customer reviews before you order from Amazon. The manager took the serial number and is contacting the warehouse and will call me back with an explanation on why I received a bad used unit when I ordered a new one. I’ll be sure to let anyone interested know the outcome. ... show more

  • Remote failed but was an easy fix. Overall, decent small AC that works.
I needed something for super hot days at my mountain cabin with no place for a window or wall unit. This does not cool the entire 1000 sq foot area downstairs, but combined with a ceiling fan to circulate the cooler air, it does enough to keep it mid-70s when it is sunny 90s outside. Not super quiet, but tolerable. Does what I wanted at a reasonable price. The remote was working one day and stopped the next after I had only used it a few times. It seemed to me that the metal spring contact points for the positive ends of the batteries were recessed too far in the plastic case and were not getting good contact. So I removed the batteries and used a small tool to gently pull the little springs out of their holes enough for good contact -- photo shows springs after my fix. Problem solved! Remote back in business. Hope this helps someone, as I see several people have had issues with the remote. Stay cool! ... show more

  • Does the job in my RV…
I purchased this to cool my small truck camper. I initially had problems but after experimenting found out I did not have it set up properly. Hopefully this will help others… A camper is air tight, unlike a small architectural zone in a home or office. This unit expels hot air to the outside that needs to be replaced by an equal amount of ambient air. Because my camper is air-tight the unit was pulling a vacuum until it couldn’t pull anymore and then it would trip out. I opened a little access panel on the opposite side of the camper and now it works like a charm. I’d give it 5 stars but it could be smaller and less expensive. There is always room for improvement. The instructions also could have identified this potential issue, but then most consumers are using this architecturaly. ... show more
