I was hesitant to buy the B&D unit after reading the reviews. People seemed to love it or it went horribly wrong. But I’ve learned that by nature, many more reviews are written by people with issues than people who have no complaints. I typically figure on a curve that a 3-4 rating would have at least 25% more 4 and 5 star customers than stated, meaning at least half a star more. That said, toward the extremes (1.0 or 5.0) the accuracy is inherently better. It’s either trash or nearly perfect. For this reason I also try to get as much info as I can outside of Amazon. A Google search of “the best portable air conditioner” yields a ton of info. In nearly every case, this Black and Decker series was rated in the top 3 and often #1. That went a long way to convince me. I pulled the trigger and 72 hours in have not been disappointed so far. Set up was easy, instructions were clear for both install and operation. I have it in a large, mostly insulated room in the attic over the garage with no other climate control. Part of it is sided by a black roof. Today the outside temp was 88 degrees and sunny. For reference, the unfinished part of the attic was 104. A good test for the unit. I started it mid morning with the room temp at about 80. I set it at 77 and it brought it down fairly quick. It maintained it all afternoon when the sun usually raises the room temp to at least 85. The compressor cycled off occasionally as it held temperature. In normal use like a living room or bedroom it should be great. To respond to some of the questions and complaints on Amazon: IT’S NOISY. No, not really. Probably quieter than many window units. THE THING BANGS WHEN CYCLING. No sign of that. IT RUNS FOR A FEW MINUTES THEN THE COMPRESSOR STOPS. It did that to me until I realized I had it on “Dehumidifier “ instead of “Cool”. Never happened again. IT DOESN’T SEEM POWERFUL. It’s amazingly powerful for its size. I can feel the air flow 10 feet away. IT BROKE IN 3 MONTHS. Can’t address that but will post updates as necessary. I’ll also report on the heat function when the weather gets cold. Also cannot yet speak to the subject of energy efficiency. Conclusion: a well-built unit that runs fairly quietly and does the job as advertised, even in tough conditions.

I have had a Honeywell unit that is bigger and has same features for a few years now. It works great. After the heat wave I got two smaller units for the bedrooms so I wouldn't have to move them every day. Unit cooled ok for a few weeks but definitely not as great as the Honeywell and the room was in the range specified. Then I tried the dehumidifier mode and it went south fast. Kept shutting off and making a buzzing noise and terrible smell. Trying the heating feature made it worse. It would shut off and buzz or say it needed to be emptied even though it was empty. First I contacted black and decker and was told that it was under their name and produced by another company. Contacted them and still have not heard back. It was past the return time but still in the 90 days under Amazon. Amazon sent me a new unit and after some issues with how to return told me to just dispose of the first one. Second one definitely cooled better but same issues with the heat function. But it started by saying it was 72 in the room when it was only 68. Then it would shut off and hum and again terrible smell. I have now returned the replacement which was much easier because I still had the box this time. As for energy consumption it was definitely higher because just using it in my bedroom during normal summer pnw made my bill go up. The remote also is terrible it doesn't light up so you can't see it in the dark and every time you want to use it the unit shuts off and you have to turn it back on. The reviews on this were really good but its a cheaply made piece of junk and honestly I think it could be a fire hazard also. Definitely won't be buying anymore black and decker ac units ever again...

Unit was returned to manufacturer who promised to replace. I have waited for replacement since August, 2023!!!! I have been informed the replacement parts are not available as they originate in China. I was initially informed a new unit would be sent. This company has corresponded with me via email in the past, now all contact phone numbers are no longer in service. This company is a scam!!!!!! I don’t have air/heat, have lost over $400.00 dollars. As a senior citizen, this is a major issue as I do not have money to pay for another unit, and continue to suffer medical issues. Amazon needs to vet its partners to assure loyal customers are not victims of fraud!!!!!!!

**UPDATE: FOUR UNITS TESTED ~2 YEARS** I've used four of these in a commercial setting for almost two years now. We use them for heat in the winter and A/C in the summer. Two are used in an 1,100sq/ft poorly insulated room with 14ft ceilings. To my surprise, they were able to adequately heat the room all winter without absolutely killing my electric bill. The 3'rd and 4'th units are used in 250sq/ft and 500sq/ft rooms respectively. The Good: • Quiet for a stand-up AC/Heater. (Likely too loud for a residence) • Almost strangely energy efficient (compared to electric radiant heat) • No weird problems (Delonghi unit had mystery error #s pop up in past) • Powers back on automatically if power is lost • The filters are easy to clean • Energy efficient compared to alternatives (Especially for heat) The Bad: • The thermostat's numbers are very wrong. I set mine to 78F in order to heat a room to 70-73F. • The thermostat's swing can be +/- 4 degrees. (It'll swing from 72-76F if set to 73F) • The instructions have an absolutely terrible error for heat mode which needs to be corrected. (See below) • Humidity has an impact on the thermostat, so you'll need to adjust it occasionally. • When it turns off, the compressor stopping makes a pretty loud "BANG" noise which shakes the whole unit. Not annoying in our business, but would be brutal if I were trying to sleep in the same room as this thing. ----- HEAT MODE ERRORS IN INSTRUCTIONS: Error 1) The instructions have an error so egregious that it nearly led me to return them. When using the heat mode, DEFINITELY STILL PIPE THE EXHAUST OUTSIDE. The instructions say "disconnect the exhaust hose" for heat use, which is stupid and wrong. No stand-up heat pump/AC unit operates that way. When in heat mode, leave the exhaust pointing outdoors and ignore the instructions. Otherwise ice cold air will be pumped into the same area it's trying to heat. Error 2) If your area is humid, you'll still need the drain hose during heat use. Ignore the instructions which say the drain hose is unnecessary in heat mode if you are in a humid area. Ours produces about a half-gallon of water every 2-3 days even in heat mode. ----- SUMMARY: With everything considered, I'm aiming to pick up a 5'th unit for another room at our shop. The monthly electric bill on these is far lower than radiant heaters, and the A/C performance has been OK thus far. For reference, an oil filled radiant heater is 5000btu @ 1500W. These heat pumps are 14,000BTU at 1,200W (or so). It's a no-brainer. After two years of use, the energy saved has mostly paid for the investment compared to the oil filled heaters we'd be using otherwise. ----- OBSERVATIONS REGARDING OTHER BAD REVIEWS: 1) Many complaints involve people setting this to 68F. That low of a setting may make this A/C unit run 24/7, which may trip the "max duty cycle" shutoff feature. That is built into many A/C units as a safety feature to prolong it's life. This explains the "THEN IT SHUTS OFF!" complaint as a feature, not a bug. Google "Duty Cycle" for more info on this. It's a pretty common thing designed to prolong a compressor's life. 2) The heat doesn't work if you follow the instructions. See the note above about always using the exhaust hose & drain tube. 3) One of the four units we have has a fan which is slightly off-balance. It's significantly louder than the other three we run. In a business, I could care less about a louder buzz from the A/C. In my living room, it would drive me nuts. Unfortunately there is a slight variation between units, which leads me to worry about QC.

It blows icicles, but it didn't do much for the room that I had intended... It's not the units fault, rather I think the walls of this particular room have no insulation within them... So I wheeled it into my bedroom, removed the old window unit, and made this one my default unit in the bedroom... It works GREAT... Now the temps are getting cooler, and I look forward to using the heat function...

Bought two and they are nice but perform like a smaller btu unit . Had to purchase a ge to make up for the fact that the btu rate is not accurate . Performs like 8000 btu !

Received and set up quickly; unit worked as expected for the warm months (August, September, October, November) leading to winter. When we had our first real cold snap, it was an easy switch to make it warm the same area. Things worked well. We kept the unit clean, free of debris, checked the filter regularly, and made sure the exhaust port wasn’t blocked. The next summer season (2023), as temperatures outside rose, we switched back to cooling without issue. In the late fall (again; 2023, barely after a year of ownership), we switched it back to heat. And noticed it wasn’t heating. We tried various things as suggested by the (useless) help provided (yes, it was plugged in; yes, it was set to heat) and gave up on trying to get it to heat again, resigning ourselves to using a simple electric space heater for the area and assuming we’d just use it as a portable air conditioner. Only thing was, the unit -- when switched back to cooling -- would no longer cool. Only the fan works at this point. So, barely 18 months after purchasing, it’s junk. Don’t pay any attention to any warranty -- it’s only 12 months, by the way. Unless you live in a major metro area, good luck finding anyone who will look at it (to determine repair, but no one works on these things). And according to my wife (who contacted B+D) it's a minimum $500 for Black and Decker to look at it, plus shipping -- meaning you should throw it away and just buy a new one. Bottom line; avoid purchasing this. Don’t make the same mistake we did, assuming we were getting quality because of the brand name. I’m not sure if the happy reviewers were just lucky with the units they got but what we got was junk. I'll never even consider the Black & Decker (excuse me; Black+Decker) name brand again. (just a nameplate, not a company; should have learned a lesson from the film "Tommy Boy" on that one) I’m out nearly $500 (the initial purchase price) for a one-year wonder.

As someone from the southwest of the United states, I am extremely familiar with lethal temperatures, and various ways to combat discomfort and health risk in the home, and of course, Chief among these is air conditioning. At the time of my purchase, this machine was very well reviewed, and for the first season through which we used it, I wanted to believe that I had made a good investment. Unfortunately, this unit had minor issues, from the start. We experienced the well documented thermostat issues, not to mention the poor performance of the included filters, and ultimately, the machine began to produce far more hot exhaust then cold air, with the machine itself being extremely lacking at directing this exhaust out of our home. The window frame insert, with which this model came, to direct exhaust out through a window, very quickly became brittle and broke despite minimal UV exposure. Purchasing replacement parts for these units is a general nightmare, and generally speaking, these units perform very poorly due to the well-documented issues of negative air pressure, and a poor conversion factor of hot air to cold air. I'm not even going to try pointing customers in a particular direction to purchase this or that other unit, but I urge most people in most consumer settings to look elsewhere and spend their money more wisely. If there is any possible way that you can get a window unit installed, or if your home and situation can function with an evaporative cooler, I recommend these majorly over this unit or this type of unit. If you absolutely must have one of these types of unit, please do more research and purchase with extreme scrutiny, definitely not getting one of these.
