You should not have to drill any holes if you check for certain you have the right chair parts in the right direction. I almost got the drill out myself after reading some reviews before assembling the chairs, so supposing our set was faulty, too. Nope just have the patience to turn the piece around until you get it right. The seats are harder than the cushion suggests but otherwise the set is perfect.

The table came a day or two prior to the chairs. It took about 20-30 minutes to put together including unboxing. The table and chairs came well packaged and it was very straightforward in putting them together. Instructions good. Not so many parts to connect that would overwhelm. It did take me over two hours to put all four chairs together. The allen wrench was somewhat hard to manipulate since most of the time if I tried to keep it in "long stand up position" in the bolt slot, the 90 degree angle part would hit the wood and I didn't want to scratch it. Therefore I had to restart the allen wrench into the bolt for each turn and it seemed difficult to seat in the bolt each turn. Therefore taking up more time. The wood is very beautiful and the seats are well made. A little on the firm side but ok. I was hoping the gray was going to be a light gray but I'd call it charcoal gray. It actually looks like a dark brown to me but maybe that's an illusion because the wood is brown and my cabinets near it are brown and it just takes on that hue. I don't know. That's fine with me. I would recommend this product. I really wanted to get the white chairs but was afraid I'd be on egg shells trying to make sure I didn't spill anything on them. Maybe a dark beige I would have preferred and been less afraid of getting them dirty.
