I was a bit uncertain at the product description of "soft foam" as the material for these mats. Chickens peck and scratch at everything in their environment, so it seemed like a foam material might not be durable enough to hold up. Thankfully, these are really more like the silicone dish drying mats and trivets, or flexible baking pans, that you can find in most kitchens these days. Far more resilient and waterproof than I was imagining. The size is excellent for a typical chicken nest box. You can also trim these down to fit a smaller size, if you keep bantams, quail or pigeons for example. Note that this is definitely for poultry and should not be used in rabbit nest boxes. They would definitely chew on these mats like they do on cardboard, but possibly with dangerous results. Use these to protect eggs in your poultry nest boxes and stick with straw (or cardboard if you must) when your bunnies are kindling their litters. I still use straw bedding over top of these pads, by the way. It keeps them cleaner and generally pushes the eggs to the center so the hens can safely step across them without scratching them too much. You probably can use these without any other bedding, but you will want to be diligent about collecting your eggs more often, and it may be necessary to train your hens to use the nesting boxes in the absence of bedding. My chickens are free-range... so without bedding to tell them that this is a good nest where they should put their eggs, they would lay somewhere out in the yard instead. Use some bedding so you can skip the Easter egg hunt! But these pads help clean out the nest box to help reduce the chances of rot and disease, and they cushion the eggs to help prevent cracking. ... show more

I got these for a dramatic play farm area in my classroom, and my coworker thought these were real eggs I brought in! They look exactly like real eggs! These eggs are made of a solid wood, and they have a good weight to them. Definitely a good purchase; highly recommend

We have chickens, and cleaning the nest boxes is an unpleasant chore. The chickens don't seem to mind the change from pine shavings to these, and it's a good bit easier to just pull these out and hose them off than the scoop out the dirty shavings and replace them. Nice soft material helps keep eggs from being broken. They do have an array of small holes in the thinner parts to allow drain-through of liquid, so will need to clean under them periodically as well. Very happy with them so far! ... show more

I have two neighbors who have chickens and do the whole egg scene. I love a good practical joke, so this is perfect to leave in their hen houses. I can just imagine their face when they go to pick this up or better yet when they don;t notice and bring it in and try to crack one.

Finished nicely. They look attractive and real. These are good for wreaths (my purpose) as well as decorative--you could put these out in a wire or wood bowl and add a nice farmhouse or rustic feature. I plan to use them in their natural state. They show them painted also but I am not sure how well these would take paint without a good efforts at sanding the surface. They look too nice as is for me to attempt paint. ... show more

I don't have live chickens and I didn't order these for their intended purpose. I'm not looking to help my hens lay eggs, but I did want it to look that way. I received a fence-looking basket and a set of goofy looking chickens, independent of one another. The chickens are meant to sit on a real fence and kept falling over the fence-basket because they're too top heavy. I needed something to prop them up and these eggs worked great!
