PROS: It's about perfect for my particular application, at a price point that is not too discouraging. I find the stiffness of the fine adjustment just about right. I haven't found that I need to use the course adjustment. People find them far too stiff but for me, my course adjustment is just moving the tripod. CONS: Mounting - It wasn't intuitive how to mount the head on a standard tripod. It was a big concern of mine when I ordered - whether or not it would mount without some kind of adapter - and it's not really shown well or discussed in the Amazon listing. What you get is a 3/8 male thread. This did not automatically mount on my ZOMEI tripod. It's a boom tripod and I was able to adapt the boom to the Bento geared head - so that was successful however my lower priced Vivitar tripod - which has a standard camera mount - would not accept the Benro head. I would guess that photographers and artists that need this type of head have a more professional type of tripod anyway - but be aware of the mounting requirement when ordering the Benro. You might need a male-male 3/8 adapter, or a 1/4 - 3/8 adapter, or some combination thereof. I want to reiterate my overall satisfaction with this product. The build feels sturdy, and the movements are smooth and with very little backlash. It does what I need at a price I can afford. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a geared tripod head.

I expected smaller, flimsier, and inferior due to comparable offers being much more pricey. Surprise hit me when I picked the box up from my door step and felt some weight. Opening the box, I pulled out a much larger than anticipated and all metal construction head. I marveled at how well crafted it was and how smoothly the gears turned with almost no backlash. There are quick releases for large deflections on each knob and a stiffer fine tune knob for smaller deflections. My advice on this is that, if you are okay adding another couple pounds to your hiking load or are just setting up at the car to do a shoot, you'll love it. If you are looking for something lightweight to just throw in your backpack and have as an option, this isn't for you. I am happy I purchased mine as I don't mind adding it to my hiking load but I could see how smaller hikers and minimalists would leave this behind.

likes: as the title says precision movements. fairly sturdy with a bit of weight. Adjustment knobs are fairly sturdy with a bit of stiffness that makes them more precise. I like the quick release for fast adjustments dislikes: not 100% immovable - still can drift the tiniest bit but not enough to be a huge issue. The adjustment knobs can be a bit stiff for some but not for me per se. Same with the quick release adjustment dial - can be a bit annoying to turn for some and it is slightly for me but not enough to return. Having said that, I have larger hands and I have a small bit of difficulty turning the knobs as my hands dont exactly fit well to them. I think it is worth the money and better constructed than others I have seen. Nothing is going to be 100%. This Benro is pretty close. I paired this with the carbon fiber Mach3 tripod and am tickled with the it.

Heads up (can I do a dad joke in a review:-) The head is great quality, packaged wonderfully and is a great asset to your arsenal of gear. However- you might note that the knobs restrict or eliminate full function as they are lower than this tripod base. i.e. We have a power slider for our camera- when screwing this on it the rotate base knob will not be adjustable because it is lower than the attachment if that makes sense. I have purchased a couple tripod adapters that will rise the head up hopefully enough to allow full use. As far as design, in my opinion, the base should be about 3/4" longer than as produced. Knobs also require a fare amount of turning to use them. They seem tight (I loosened the adjustment lock as well).

It's an amazing addition in the sense that it adds superior control to my compositions. However, it's slow to compose, heavy, big, and clunky. I love it, but I hate it. However, I've used it every day since I got it. I constantly think about how much I hate it. But I've gotten some amazing shots with it. Ehh!!! I recommend it.. I guess.. Yes. No. I don't know.

I purchased this for real estate photography and it’s excellent. The adjustments are precise and it feels very solid. I previously had a Manfrotto geared head and I like this better. My only complaint is tightening the mounting plate is a bit odd because it’s tight under the camera, otherwise you mount the camera backwards, but not a big deal at all. Very happy with my purchase.

My other ‘older’ geared head is a Manafrotto head, which has proved to loosen internally over times, several times even after being fixed by the manufacturer. So instead of paying a nearly new price to have it repaired yet again, I thought I’d give Benro geared head a try. It is solidly made with good materials and is lighter than the Manafrotto head, but solid just the same. The knobs work fine for quick or small adjustments so there isn’t a problem there. However, there are two challenges with this head, which lowered my rating. 1) The bubble in the level on top is so small compared to the circle used to center it, that it is difficult to be dead on accurate. Even just a small tweak, depending on just your own eye to make a judgement on whether it is completely accurately centered can be off. It would have been SO EASY to make the bubble bigger so that it would be quite easy to exactly center the bubble within the circle. 2) The attachment screw on the underside of the plate, which is attached to the camera body works loose. THIS IS SERIOUS! Unless I notice that the camera is starting to wiggle, I’m afraid that my $5000 combination Canon 5DMII / 17mm TS lens will fall off. I shoot 3 homes per day and typically every morning when starting, I have to retighten the screw. I’d use something like Lock Tight on the threads, but then I’d have trouble removing it. Update: I’ve been using this head now for a long time, usually 5 days a week. Once I learned that hand tightening wasn’t enough, I use a screw driver or a tool with a flat edge to tighten the mounting screw. Now it only needs retightening about every 1 to 2 weeks. Upgraded the rating from 3 to 4 stars.

I'm almost at rated capacity using a Sigma 150-600 and a Nikon D810 with a battery grip attached. With the price difference between this one and the big guys, I'm pretty happy. It's pretty stiff but, that's easier to deal with than loose and wobbly. Update: When you attach this head to a tripod there is a 3/8 thread in the center and three set screws to keep it from rotating. The bottom of this is too small for those set screws to work as designed. I found this out when the release control for the base axis stopped working. The fine adjustment still works OK though. It still works for what I do with it but, that axis feels pretty lumpy and I don't expect it to get better. I purchased this back in May of last year. I'm going to try to contact them and see what they say. Update: I sent it in. In less than a week they sent me a new replacement. Thanks Benro, and kudos.

I had procrastinated a long time before finally ordering a gear head. I have a good tripod and a good ball head but I needed a more precise and, more importantly, rock-solid head for when changing to vertical perspective. With big glass (in studio, a Z 24-70 2.8S) the ball head would always sag a bit during transition. Not so with the gear head. I would also mention that if you don't have a 3/8" male-to-male already to mount it to your tripod (not included with the gear head, order this at the same time: LRONG 2Pcs 3/8 inch Male to 3/8 inch Male Threaded Tripod Screw Adapter.

This is the first geared head I’ve had, and I’m very glad I got it. I always felt the regular ball heads were hard to level for landscape photos. One downside is that with the geared head, you can’t make quick moves easily. It isn’t for action or wildlife. I have two other heads for those purposes. But for landscapes, it actually helps to slow down and get your composition just right. For panorama shooting, it simplifies the process of moving the camera for the images that will be stitched together.

This is my first 3gear head so I do not have a comparison to make but what I found with his gear head immediately is the simplicity of use. I really like the precision it offers. Now that being said my 1 drawback I have discovered so far (I've had it in hand for about an hr and have not shot with it yet) is that if you are mounting it on a tripod that has a larger top (like a systemic from gitzo) then the small footprint of its base the knobs are so low and large and grippy that it can be a trick to actually get it screwed down onto the tripod (like on my specific tripod there is a leveling base which has a bubble level sticking off the side slightly and the gear knobs catch on the level). I'm sure I am going to find a work around but if the base extended 1/4in lower then the knobs this would probably alleviate the problem.

When using my Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens I had great difficulty in getting anything to stay on target when I tightened everything up. When the camera settled, it would be pointing below the original target. Trying to aim above the target to take the droop into account was a guessing game that worked about 20% of the time. I purchased this and everything is rock solid. I can't speak to longevity, but I've read some people complain about things getting loose, but there are ways of tightening that up again so I don't foresee any issues. One review I read mentioned the "jump" you get when switching from fast turns to the gears, and yeah, it is a little clunky, but you learn to work with it quickly. Whenever I pan using the fast method (using the wheel behind the knob), the first thing I do when I get to my point is to turn the adjustment knob and get that "jump" out of the way. Then I start work on the fine tuning. It doesn't always jump, but more often than not it will. Not a big deal. I'm very happy with this purchase.
