  • The basketball star and his girl
A great love story that is slow burn, time lapse, and a lot of angst! I enjoyed reading it, only thing I would warn against is, that there is a mention of a death of a parent and alcoholism. So if that is not a trigger for you, dive in this great book!

  • Good Read, but I’d stay with series in order
Overall, I really liked it. Pretty realistic story TBH. I felt like the end kinda dragged a little & could’ve probably have been shorter. Not then end, end, but more toward the end. It just seemed like there was a lot of not much going on. But it didn’t detract from the story. And it was probably realistic. Couple things I REALLY LIKED about this story; 1) the way addiction is discussed as a whole family issue. Most stories gloss over the subject once the person goes into rehab. They act like everything is resolved now that the person’s in rehab. That’s SOOO not the case. I really appreciated seeing a more realistic viewpoint. That everything is not all happy, happy, joy, joy. (It’s not awful either. It’s a process.) 2) I liked the tie in of characters from other books. This was done in a way that way important to the story & not just some random paragraph that was clearly tacked on to allow for a tie in to the next book. You could take out the last paragraph/pages from the story, which is the tie in to the next book, (spoiler alert!) and you wouldn’t lose anything. But those characters are still in the story. The lead ins are still present. That kind of stuff makes me happy. It doesn’t cheapen the story or make me feel like you think I’m an idiot who can’t figure out what you’re doing. I know that’s kinda weird. But when you read as much as I do, it feels like there’s a sense of respect when an author does something like this. And that matters. ... show more

  • Good Series
Good series. I like the connections of the stories overlapping. Easy read for the beach. Characters have good depth. Relatable.

  • Eli and Becca
I enjoyed the characters. There was some growth although we didn't get much at the end. I understand seeing another pov but most of the book was a retelling of the first.

  • Nice Second chance romance
I like Becca and Eli’s story, but wish we had gotten more. Maybe we’ll get glimpses in the last two books. All the miscommunications was a little tedious but still enjoyed it.

  • Overcoming Toxic Expectations
She's a preacher's daughter that has been manipulated her whole life. Constantly running from the life she doesn't want but never feeling like she can escape. He was the town's pride and joy before he got a career ending injury. The way McIntire wove these two together and the way she wrote them navigating through their growth was beautiful. We knew something happened in college between them when we had Lee's POV book 1. We got to experience what happened! ... show more

  • A shot to the heart!!!
I love interconnected stand alone novels and Emily McIntire scores a winning goal with the Sugarlake series. I loved Beneath the Stars, but Beneath the Stands spoke to me on so many levels. The effect family has on your psyche and your outlook on your future cannot be overstated. Grief, manipulation, crushing expectations and lack of communication all add up to an inability to truly live a meaningful life. Watching Becca and Eli navigate feelings and desires that they really aren’t prepared to handle was gut wrenching. Understanding the reasons behind their issues brought sadness, anger and disgust at how manipulative people can be. The dual perspectives allow the reader to see how two people view the same circumstances through the eyes of their own experiences. I hurt for Becca and Eli as they navigated the highs and lows of building a relationship with no true idea how to build a foundation. We as parents hold the keys to so much for our children. We can let our own experiences poison their future or we can choose to see things differently from our own lives and champion theirs. Though I was affected by a parent’s addiction to alcohol and experienced betrayal as a child and as an adult, I have worked hard not to poison my children regarding the opportunity for truly meaningful relationships. It takes willingness from both parties to want to move forward from hurt and loss. I appreciate that Emily doesn’t gloss over the struggles of life. When we walk together through the fire, we can come out stronger. Loved seeing the honesty and healing between Eli and Alina. I so admire a person’s willingness to change. No one can make that decision for you. Thank you for this book!!❤️💔❤️ ... show more

  • Emotional Rollercoaster
What I don’t like :( Becca likely likes to be hurt (choked, bruised) during intimate moments, likely because she feels unworthy of joy and love. In a book we can accept this, because we know in his heart of hearts Eli has a love for her, but his and her behavior is not healthy in reality. Please do not go searching out/participating in this kind of “love.” I am appalled authors are starting to make this a norm. Please Be Careful🙏 What I do like!!! I love that Eli and Becca grow so much (there lives remain pretty stagnant unfortunately), but as people. What I struggled with the 1st book is everyones complete selfishness. No one cared about anyone else! This one the characters really grow out of that 😍, will near the end 😁. I also love how Becca realizes how easy it is to fall as a human. She hates her parents for their judgement hypocrisy, and realizes that stuff can easily occur in her too. That is why character is more important than anything we will do. Happily Ever After 🤗🤗🤗 ... show more
