  • I wish I had known...
I am new to bee keeping (this is the start of my 3rd year) and I didn't know mice were a possible threat to a hive. I got this entrance reducer thinking I would use it to reduce the hive entrance size in cold weather. When I went out to my hive to put it on I noticed a lot of debris in the floor pan. We'd had some warmer days, so I though the girls had just been cleaning the hive out. I installed the entrance reducer. Went back a few days later and thought maybe I saw a mouse's tail behind the reducer, inside the hive. I talked myself out of that thinking mice weren't a threat. Wrong. I went back a few days later and it was obvious something was very wrong. I opened up the hive (2 Hoover ten deeps with a medium on top) and discovered I had trapped a mouse inside when I put the entrance reducer on. All my bees were dead and their honey stores ruined. I learned a hard lesson, but at least now I know the value and necessity of these entrance reducers. My new bees have been ordered and I will start over come May. ... show more

  • Unique, that's for certain
This four-pack of Entrance Reducer and Mouse Guard can be used for either 8 or 10 frames and are made of stainless steel. Mostly good workmanship, but the edges are not "broken" - they can be sharp or have burrs. So be careful there. These fit well on my 10 frame hives. I generally run the small opening on a normal reducer year round, adding a robbing screen as needed. These reducers will take some thought on how to best use them. My immediate thought is to open it up to about nine inches, with the small holes up and let the ladies come and go through the one inch left open, as opposed to through the nicely done archways. As I set up additional hives for spring, these will definitely be a part. A unique product and a good buy. ... show more

  • Does its job, well.
First time using this type of product. We are starting a hive and are learning as we go. These entrance reducers are easy to install and seem to be doing their job. Not cheap flimsy metal, but only time will tell what the elements will do. Great for a single or double hive. Really depends on your set-up. Our hive is a little hidden in a wooded area, so there is definitely potential for small animals, birds and other bee species to try and infiltrate the hive. Im hoping (working so far) that these reducers will hold up and continue to allow our bees to function properly and most importantly saftely. Having a hive to care for is am awesome experience. Being able to offer your bees some extra protection, will benefit you more than the bees. Seems like a no brainer to have this product installed if you want to help keep your hive safe. ... show more

  • Easy to install, keeps the mice out!
We are brand new to beekeeping and have been so excited to get these. We've had issues with mice (we also have chickens, so they find food everywhere!) and haven't had an issue since installing these. Our bees are safer!

  • These Should Keep the Mice Out of the Hives
I only use entrance reducers over the winter months and mainly to keep mice out of my hives. I don’t usually have problems over the summer, and I prefer not to restrict air flow over the hot months. That said, I will only use these over the winter months and will push pin them in place rather than using the screws that came with them. The reducers are stainless steel and a decent thickness. I like that they are adjustable. I use 8-frame hives, but sometimes I buy a hive from someone with 10 frames, so it’s nice to be able to use the reducers on both sizes. The edges are a little sharp and that is the reason I knocked off a star. Otherwise, they will do the job. ... show more

  • Heavy Duty, nearly indestructible. Missing mounting holes
These are very well made. Very very heavy duty and stainless steel to boot. They do however have one flaw. Only one half of the sliding pair has mounting holes. This is a design flaw for sure. If you close it up to a small opening, like during the winter, there are no exposed holes to mount the unit ! So, to be useful, you will have to drill some holes in the second piece. This is really a shame as these are otherwise the best entrance reducers I have ever seen. ... show more

  • A more permanent solution....
The skunks will pull the wooden entrance reducers away from the hive, when these are properly secured - that is no longer an issue. Nice stuff, will be purchasing more.
