I bought two of these valves to process a little honey from our hives. After about an hour I saw some honey seeping from the valve so I put the pail in a pan to catch anymore. The picture is after about five hours of the honey sitting in the bucket. If I tried to tighten it anymore I'm sure I would have stripped the threads. The other valve is holding just fine after four hours. Both were installed exactly the same in brand new food grade buckets. Update: A day after I left the above review I received a note from the seller of these honey gates. They were very concerned that I was having a problem with one leaking unit. We needed these bee valves promptly. Although the description says they are yellow, they are actually orange. The only problem we ran into is the O-ring falls off the spout.

    • A few small changes would make a major improvement

First off - these do the job adequately, but it needs a few small tweaks. The one thing that really bothers me is the fact the hardware can't readily be adjusted without tools...you might be able to snug it down enough by hand to avoid leaking, but then it will be hard to loosen without spinning. 1) Swap the philips head screws out for hex head 2) Mold the hex heads into the plastic to keep them from spinning 3) Use a wing nut on both sides so the hinge side can be loosened so it swings easier but tightened to seal Finally, it would be nice if they came with an extra gasket for either side of the bucket. ... show more

I've tried a few of these from Amazon with no luck. I read reviews on these of ppl talking about them leaking too. I'd like to say, they do not leak. I cut the hole in my buckets and put them in tight. They held water with zero leaks, no problem.
