I also have some pretty thick calves that stay thick down the back of the calf pretty much to the ankle, which makes it a pain when looking for hiking boots or any type of high rise shoe. I love Bearpaw shoes and these were just what I needed for my mountain trip. I ordered my usual size 8 as I have many pair of Bearpaw boots and shoes and all fit fine. However, these were too small. I really wanted them to fit because they are very well made and super comfortable. The innersole feels like memory foam. It is soft and shock absorbing. The outside of the boot looks good and is well made. I walked in the boots around the house hoping that they would stretch just a bit but my toes touched the ends even with very thin socks on. I had to return the size 8's but I bought a size 8.5 elsewhere and they are awesome. They have plenty of room for heavy socks and feel great on my feet. The boot is a bit heavy but the traction is good and the backs of my heels don't hurt when I wear them even for a long trek. I don't know yet about their longevity so I didn't rate 5 stars although they definitely seem to be very durable. I suggest sizing up a half of a size or, if you like to wear hiking boots with really thick socks or with insoles, even a whole size up. Watch for price drops. The price varies often on Amazon.

While I do enjoy hiking, I should clarify upfront that I’m not a serious hiker, yet. I needed a pair of comfortable sneaker-like boots that would enable me to walk my dog in our inclement, snowy, cold, wet, often miserable upstate NY weather. I wanted them to be comfortable and cushiony so that I could walk on pavement for several miles. I knew that the boots would have to be a bit sturdy as I would likely be encountering slush and puddles in fall and spring. I also wanted them to be somewhat warm, but I’m not going to walk my dog when it’s colder than 35 anyway. These work for me. They provide room for toes to wiggle, support and cushion for long walks, a warm and dry footbed even in slushy cold, and decent traction on slippery, slushy pavement. They also provide significant ankle support, which I’m not used to. Last but not least, they run wide and short. I have a narrow foot but appreciate the width in the toe box so there is no breaking in period. I went up .5 size because I read the other reviews, and I am glad I did. These fit more like a size 8 than a size 9. (The only shoes I consistently wear a 9 in are Nike’s running shoes.) Even in these size 9s, my toes are almost to the end of the boots. So, if you are in doubt, size up a half size! Besides running a bit short, the only reason I took off one star is that they have a bit of a bulky look to them. I like the charcoal and periwinkle colorway, but I can’t imagine wearing them in the summer with shorts.

I wish you would've sent 8 W and not 8, middle of winter in Indiana I need these shoes. My feet has nuroptithy from chemotherapy, I can't wear anything tight. 8 wide width would've fit the bill, but was sent 8 regular. Box was 8 wide, to bad the shoes didn't match. February 11 I decided to try these shoes on one more time before sending them back so glad I did. Because of nuroptithy my feet swell, and have severe nerve problems so tight shoes makes it worse. These shoes are great no need to send back, and I can wear socks again. Very comfortable, people with nuroptithy will find relief. I'm editing this because I was afraid to wear outside the house so I wore them short intervals inside. They hurt my feet!! Caused nuroptithy to rise because to tight. I did donate the shoes to the cancer center i go to someone else could use them. I do like them shoes to the point I was tempted to order another pair. But.. I still need 8 wide width, I'm afraid to spend another $50 to be disappointed with the size on the box don't match the size on the shoes. They are very nice shoes, it's not the shoes it's my feet after cancer surgery, and chemo.

Uhm… Giving 2 stars only because I really liked design and brand in general… but I was shocked to receive size 11 when I ordered size 12. These boots are clearly worn for sometime as well! Will try my luck in actual local stores. Don’t want to risk buying shoes on Amazon ever again.
