  • Cool rock songs, not stodgy old songs and exercises like a lot of method books
Format: Paperback
Fantastic book for kids. Teaches using pieces of cool rock songs, not stodgy old songs and exercises like a lot of method books. Our 7-year-old really responded well to this book and learned quickly. The MP3 examples and jam-along tracks were a great confidence builder. Many have a slow version with a metronome and the bass only as well as a band arrangement minus the bass at the normal tempo. He loved jamming along and "rocking out" with the band arrangements. My only complaints (which are minor) are... 1. The arrangement is incorrect for the "Every Breath You Take" excerpt that is used in the book. This required some "unlearning" when he started working on the complete song. 2. About halfway through the book is the song "Hard Days Night" which has the student learn the intro, verse, and chorus sections. I don't know why they didn't include the bridge section as well. It's any harder than the rest of the parts and would allow the student to be able to play a complete song. I showed my son how to play the bridge section in a couple of minutes and with a few tries he was playing the whole song. 3. I wish the band arrangement play-along MP3's were much longer. They are mostly just a couple of bars long which is OK. However, having play-along MP3's that are longer promote two things, stamina and learning the ability to find your place in the song if you mess up. I ended up using a DAW to cut up and extend many of the MP3's so that they were at least two minutes long. All-in-all I highly recommend this book! It was a very successful first method book for our son and got him excited about playing the bass. ... show more

  • Good visual instructions
Format: Paperback
Got this for my son who wanted to learn the bass. He is a visual learner. This book has lots of pictures of hand and finger placement for chords. My son was originally skeptical about it. After a couple days though he asked if they have an advanced book cause it was so helpful for him.

  • I'm returning it. Bad hand position, bad fingering choices, fingers bent backwards - no, thanks.
Format: Paperback
Pages 2 - 5: Useful information and pictures about buying the right size bass, how to hold it, etc. Page 6: Picture shows a bad left hand position, wrist pushed up. Page 8: Shows using 3rd finger, not 4th, and the finger is bent backwards - two bad things. Page 10: Same bad hand position picture as page 6. Page 14: Same wrong finger, bent backwards as page 8. ... and more of the same. I teach 1-2-4 fingering, same as upright. I teach "guitar" fingering, 1-2-3-4, once we get to about the 5th fret or so, as an option. Not the book for me and my students. I'm returning it. ... show more
