The media could not be loaded. This is a good yarn winder, but they are serious that it's only for thinner yarns. For people who don't know, winders like these make round, flat shaped disks of yarn that, because of its shape, is easy to stack and store. Because they are flat on top, you can put one on top of the other without them rolling away. Because of the way the ball winder works, the yarn cakes are designed so that you pull the yarn from the center. This allows the yarn cake to stay in one place and not roll around while you use the yarn, as it would if it was shaped in a ball. The description says it is not for thick yarns, which was my observation. It is for regular yarn and anything thicker than the yarn shown in my pictures is too thick. Going along with yarn size, it does not make a huge yarn cake, since you are using thinner yarn. Thicker yarn requires a wider base and a taller core. But since it does not need those things because it is not for thick yarn, the size of the base and the height of the core will make a reasonably sized yarn cake for thin to medium yarns. It has a smooth mechanism and cranks evenly. It has grippers on the base that prevent it from sliding around as you crank it. It is important not to crank it too hard or too fast as that can cause it to slide around and mess up your yarn cake. The biggest con I found is that you have to attach this to a narrow table. I prefer to roll a lot of skeins at one time. I like to use my dining room table for this, but the description says the winder will only fit onto a square edged table that is 1.77” thick. That is not very thick and it’s not big enough for my dining table. A longer screw mechanism would be much better. In my experimentation with this, I found that it can fit a table very close to two inches, but not much more than that. Overall I’m really happy with this yarn winder and will be using it often, keeping in mind it’s only for thinner yarns.

I recently started using a magnetic yarn holder when I crochet. Bad news when I turned most of my yarn stash into balls a long time ago. This caked up my whole stash, including pretty chunky yarn, in just a few hours. Everything fits so much better in my yarn container now. I only wish the cakes were slightly tighter. 4 stars instead of 5 because there are a lot of other similar winders out there that give you more for less, but if you already have too many knitting/crocheting accessories, maybe that's a bonus feature.

I crochet a lot and have always just wound my yarn balls by hand in the past, so I have always wanted one of these yarn winders for a long, long time. I finally gave in and ordered one and wished that I had not waited so long to do so. Having a basic knowledge of how these work, I did not read the instructions yet, but just set things up in a way that I had seen done before, and got started. I had about a quarter of a yarn skein left from a project before, I got the spindle attached to the yarn winder, clipped the yarn into the two grooves on the top of the spindle, And threaded the yarn through the metal ring holder. I then started to turn the handle and wind the yard, and I had no idea that it would work as fast as it did! In a matter of perhaps 10 seconds, all the yard was already wound, and what had been a half messy clump of yarn, was now a beautiful little yarn ball. I especially love that because you attach the first portion of the yarn to the spindle, that you now have a center pull ball of yarn, whereas before, if your yarn was all mangled, you may have lost that a long time ago. This is such a cool little gadget, it feels well built, it looks nice, and it does a great job. It is all that I thought it would be, and then some. This is a really well built gadget for people that crochet, and I imagine that knit as well.

This yarn winder works well. It is very easy to set up and get started, and is easy to operate. I do note that we had to re-do our first 2 balls of yarn because we didn't hold the yarn tension tight enough while winding. (I am including a picture showing my granddaughter holding the yarn as it goes into the winder to give an idea as to what you need to do.) The yarn winder seems to be sturdy and well-made. It clamped tightly to my counter top without wobbling or slipping. The ad says it can handle 3.5 oz of yarn. However, I wound two separate packages of 3.5 oz worsted weight yarn to see how they went. I was surprised that the winder got full at about 2 to 2.5 oz of yarn, and could not handle the whole 3.5 oz of yarn. I had to break it into two separate balls, and the remainder of the 3.5 package of yarn had to be made into a separate 2nd ball, about 1 oz, I would estimate. Maybe we could have kept a tighter tension on the yarn to make it wind tighter, but I didn't think it would be good to store the yarn pulled too tight. Overall, I am happy with the yarn winder, and I think it is a good value at the list price.

I am very new to crochet, and have just moved up from amigarumi kits to making my own projects. I prefer to wind my yarn by hand, but I thought I would give this yarn winder a try! It is VERY smooth and easy to use. The adjustable clasp on the bottom is a bit small, making it a challenge to find a space in my house that I can attach it to. It wouldn't fit on the end of any table or endtable we have, so I attached it to a base on our cat tree. It isn't possible to remove the clasp, so this has been quite a challenge. As long as you have a place to fit it, this is a great winder!
