Still experimenting with pizza mode vs toast mode for the right combo (or I could read the manual and recipes, but where's the fun in that? ) I love the color, we are expecting to redo our kitchen counters with a dark/dramatic tile color and it will blend in and not visually dominate when we do. My folks have one of those toaster ovens that does all kinds of stuff, but just toasting a piece of bread in theirs is too dang complicated. It’s a really good toaster, does everything you would expect from a high end small oven, very consistent and the programs are usefulll. Result of amazing specially adding the 5cc water for moist inside and crisp outside results. It’s just a bit overpriced but in the end we still love it.

    • Makes perfect toast!

We have been looking for the perfect toaster for some time now and just happened to stumble on a mention of the Balmuda toaster recently while on the internet. We love Japanese and Taiwanese style thick toast and this toaster seemed perfect for this kind of bread. We also recently found the perfect recipe for Japanese style milk bread which is wonderful when toasted. We decided to purchase this toaster after watching many youTube videos of the toaster in action and given the avilability now of a US version (so happy to see it offered here on Amazon directly from Balmuda US! it ships domestically from Torrance, CA, and it's the same price as direct purchase from their website, $329, cheaper than the Japanese versions that are available from other sellers). The toaster arrived earlier than expected (estimated arrival date of 6/22-6/25 but we received it today, 6/17!) and we tried several slices of Japanese milk bread, thickly sliced, at different toasting times (instructions recommedn 2.5-3.5 minutes). All came out perfect - soft, moist inside with a nicely toasted, slightly crunchy exterior. Kids found it fun to add the 5mL of water and watch the toaster oven steam up inside during the cooking process. The toaster comes with English-only instructions and a stylish manual. There are many videos online of different kinds of eggy cheese toasts made in this toaster that we want to try next. We also hope to try some older pieces of bread to see if it does indeed revive them and make them tasty again. So far, the toaster has lived up to our expectations and has made us some perfect toast! ... show more

    • Great toast, some rough edges, needs more manual control

Most of the reviews cover the basics about this toaster so I'll try to just touch on the crucial details. I bought the Balmuda toaster partly out of curiousity and partly because I wanted to downsize from my giant Breville. This is smaller than your average American toaster oven, it roughly fits about two pieces of standard sandwich bread. It's not quite big enough to fit three halved english muffins which is a mild nuisance. The quality of toast is good. The addition of steam does result in nicely browned bread that isn't at all dry on the inside. The difference is not massive, let's say if you're a picky foody you'll probably be able to tell the difference. For fit and finish, I do have some complaints. The included nonstick pan is junk - it has the least-nonstick surface of any pan I've used in many years. Foods stick badly, and the coating is flakey and delicate. I will probably end up trying to find a replacement for this. The little 5ml mug for dosing out the necessary water for cooking is cute and functional, but for a device with so much attention to detail it is surprising that it doesn't have a place to store it. I foresee my toddler losing this. I wish I had more manual controls. I can't simply turn on the broiler, or turn on the elements to my choosing. Unlike most toaster ovens you can't adjust the height of the racks, this toaster is just about toast and that's about it. There's some negativity in my review but overall I do like the toaster. This product is 100/100 for what it does. Makes perfect toast (even from older, refrigerated bread) and toasts/reheats other breads, baked goods, pastries very, very well. It doesn’t have the bells and whistles of fancy toaster ovens and has capacity for just two large slices of bread, so if you’re cooking for two, it will require sequential cooking. Also, it has oven features at 350, 400 and 450, but you’ll want to preheat it a little to get comparable cook times to other ovens. Good for reheating a couple items (like chicken breast) while using the oven. But you should buy this for the toast because the toast and toasted sandwiches you can make are incomparable. It takes up a little under 2 sq ft of counter space and does get hot on the top/ sides (so it needs spacing) but it’s light enough to easily move off the counter when not in use. Easy to wipe clean and very simple to use. Makes an exceptionally pleasant “ding” chime when the timer is done. It’s easy to watch the cooking and add time if desired. I got this unexpected lil Japanese toast steam toaster for Christmas, and it was my favorite gift. I use it constantly. Sometimes we just have buttered toast for dinner. ... show more
