This yarn winder is great for smaller weight yarn balls. However, it isn’t super big, so if you have a thicker yarn, it probably won’t hold very much of the yarn ball on it. The motor has been great so far, and it’s super easy to set up and use. Definitely worth it for organizing scraps of yarn sitting around after finishing a project.

Very easy to use, comes already assembled, the only thing you have to do is mount it if you choose to, and they provide hardware for that. The instruction manual was simple and easy to follow. I used one of my wire open eye beading needles to feed the yarn through the holes because it was easier for me to do that way and took less time. There is a dial on the front for speed control, it doesn't go super fast, but fast enough to wind the yarn without it tangling or getting caught under the spool. I let it wind on it's on without any issues, but I noticed it flows better if the yarn is held slightly taunt, and makes better packed cakes, so I set up a little clip that holds it on my desk so I don't have to sit with it. The product works great, and is helping me wind all my yarn from other projects so I can make a scrap yarn granny throw.

I ordered this hoping to make my yarn stash more containable. It works, yes, but not perfectly. Chunky yarn, you can forget about. It's not gonna work on that. The tension is a little wonky, but I think with some practice (maybe?) it can be perfected. Also, the ball doesn't like to get too big or it goes off. I don't think I would buy this again, considering the price. Call me crazy, but I typically use a nostepinne and I think I'll stick with it.

I wanted to like this but it doesn't wind tight enough and it struggles and is slow. Also can hear gears slipping for no reason.

This saves so much time you don't even know. We used to have one by hand and that got sore after a while. Any serious crafter, quilter or all around neat freak needs one of these. Crochet, you name it. For us, we are getting into making rugs and like to knit on occasion, so this is perfect to get the proper ball and for storage and use. Works great once it's set up. It takes a bit of getting used to, as the threading the yard through the tension plate isn't super easy (at least for me, your results may vary) but once it was set it was off and running. It's nice and quiet and has a dial for speed and the best part is that it will stop when and if the yard gets tangled which is good because it doesn't break the yarn. Lower speed is good. I tried to take some video but the resolution wasn't up to par, so here are some photos that may help you decide. For us, we wonder why it took us so long to get one, we will never go back to manual. The only downside: The cord is far too short. Get an extension cord, you will need it. My wife has the monster yarn collection, and I always dread the time when she says it’s time to set up the manual winder. So thankfully this popped up and I thought we would try it. It does work, but you have to be careful, or it will create a giant mess of a ball. It goes a bit quicker than hand winding it on the doohickey she has, but if you don’t pay attention said mass of yarn will form. It says adjustable but its really what speed do you want a mess to form: right now, in a few minutes, or eventually. I settled on the eventually speed and saved myself some physical labor over our doohickey version. As another reviewer said you have to watch it as it gets larger or it will slip off and cause yarnpocolypse. It is very compact though so that is a nice bonus.
