    • Great fish feeder for peace of mind
We like to travel. We also have pets. Dogs, cats, fish... yep, we love our animals. Each has their own unique needs when we travel regardless of whether we take them with or they stay at home- well, except for the fish, who are always at home. One of the biggest issues we've run into with the fish, is getting someone to feed them properly while we are away. This fish feeder really stepped up and I'm rather happy with it's performance. It does run on batteries so we won't be using this all the time but then, this was ordered as a vacation remedy as opposed to a home remedy. I will say that this is definitely a larger unit and trying to use it on a smaller aquarium (and even some hooded models) is going to be difficult. The food dispensed has been on time and appears to be the correct amount each time. I will say though, that I rather wish that this was more like the cat feeder that we can set up a feeding schedule on- but that's just me. Overall, it's a good solution to a traveling fish problem. 10/10 would recommend! ... show more

    • Despite one thing, I like this feeder
I’m an engineer that has been keeping fish for more than 50 years. I’m a member of an aquarium club where I have taken on the role of testing and evaluating aquarium products, systems and configurations. Just something to keep in mind as you read this review. About this feeder... This feeder holds more food than the previous generations of feeders I’ve owned. It works well with pellet food, but not flakes. The older feeders I own don't handle flakes all that well either. I tested this feeder with both the 2mm and 1/2mm size pellets I had on hand. The feeder allows for one portion per feeding cycle. The portion size is set using a “plug” that is placed in the output drawer. There is a rubber flap above the drawer to help keep the food dry. The feeder uses two regular AAA batteries (included), which I appreciate. There’s nothing worse than having to find some wonky USB charging setup and then waiting hours for something to charge, when you could just slap some batteries in the thing and move on to your next task. The feeder would be even better if you could plug it into an outlet. At 5-1/4 inches including the mounting mechanism, this feeder is relatively tall. Two of my four tanks have hoods, and this feeder only fits under one of them. The length and width is roughly 3 inches by 3 inches. Obviously, this feeder is not too tall to fit on my tanks that do not have hoods, but the fish in one of those tanks will not eat pellets so I didn’t try it there. For installation, the feeder can be clamped to the side of the tank using the feeder’s clamping system, or it can sit on a “foot” that attaches to a flat surface with the included double sided tape. Both mounting options work well. The one drawback to this feeder... Most fish species sleep at night and don’t eat in the dark. The ones that do eat at night, such as nocturnal plecos, don’t eat during the day… and they typically eat different foods than other fish. Keep in mind that tropical fish should be on a 12 hour lighting cycle. In addition, it’s much healthier for fish to eat several times per day, rather than all at once. Also keep in mind that uneaten food in an aquarium fouls the water and could kill your fish. The drawback is in the feeder's timer… When using this feeder with the timer set to the 12-hour interval, it is likely that no fish will be feeding every other time the feeder dumps food in the tank, leaving uneaten food behind. On the 8-hour setting you might only get one feeding out of three that happens while the fish are eating. This leaves the once every 24 hours setting as the only useful setting. The feeder might as well not have a timer. A better solution would be a timer that allows the fish-keeper to set the daily start time, presumably after the light comes on, and then to release a smaller portion of food every three hours. After the total feeding time elapses (9-hours in this example), the feeder would wait 15 hours before starting again. This feeder works well enough that I may disassemble it and put in my own timer.     • Great fishfeeder with enough options for variety of different feeding amounts and times.
Reviewing fishkeeper Automatic Fish Feeder for Aquarium – I had an auto fish feeder break while I was on vacation once. I was lucky that I still had a close friend coming over to check on the fish and the plants while we were gone, and she noticed it & took over feeding. However, I prefer to not ask her to feed the fish because she loves them a little too much and shows love through food! I do have another auto feeder, but I ordered this one to put in the tank as a backup for our vacations. That way, if one breaks, she can turn the other one on instead of taking over feeding. It works well. The adjustment trays for portion control are varied and offer good size amounts and I love that I have three feeding options because I normally feed my fish small amounts, three times a day (fish in the wild eat all day-whoever came up with feeding an aquarium full of fish once a day was cruel). The feeder requires 2 AAA batteries, and it comes with two to start. I plan to always put fresh batteries in before a trip. That’s a little annoying, but short of plugging it in or having it rechargeable, which likely wouldn’t work well around moisture, I know of no other way it could be designed, and I would like plugging it in and using an outlet even less.
