  • such a good sound!
Color: Real Walnut Wood Veneer
If they are just in front of you, you get a rich, warm, and pure sound, 5 stars. If you need overwhelming bass, add a subwoofer as I did

  • Great desk speakers (but need time)
Color: Real Walnut Wood Veneer
Run these for a few hours before freaking out - they need time to chill out ;-) They are far better after a dozen hours to my ears. If your after big sound rock concerts - these are not the droids... sorry.. speakers you're looking for. Acoustic, Jazz, Mellow, Classical are best IMO. They don't lack normal bass but just don't have that big thump. Great mix of features and blue tooth is really solid. I also love that you can have wired and blue-tooth connected and BT takes priority - I use it to connect two computers and play music on one while I work then swap for conference calls. I don't have them in an ideal location (mine are too low as under monitors angled up) but they still do great. Shame this does not have a sub out like it's smaller brother - feels like a downgrade to me even though I'm not running a sub. Only down side I have the is cost - they really are steep.... but in the end that fades over time. ... show more

  • Great sound for the size/price, a premium bluetooth audio playback rig
Color: Real Walnut Wood Veneer
I researched this type of product well before making my purchase, lots of good other reviewers for products from the same company, both more and less expensive. This is a happy medium product for me, and I am very happy with the product and its capabilities. I am a location audio recording person and audiophile, and while this product at this price point is clearly not a world beater, that is not the object of this type of product. What I can say is that this product sounds decent with live streamed audio (SiriusXM usually), and is not annoying to someone used to listening to accurate acoustic audio / recordings. The switching amp actually sounds pretty decent, and this rig is well worth the price. It is easy to move from room to room when needed, and comes with nice sleeves for the speakers so that when taking in 'on the road' the rig is reasonably well protected.....a nice touch I am not sure others have mentioned. The bluetooth range is decent, and the only thing I would say is that it does not automatically reconnect after shutting it down one evening and starting it up the next morning with my Tab 7+. I have decent sound when using the bluetooth, and therefore the built in DAC, that I have not tried to compare using the line in function. If I wanted premium sound I would use a different rig, but this is great for work out music, and or background music when doing something else. If a bluetooth rig would have been my only audio playback rig I would have opted for the larger brother of this unit, for the clarity of the bass if nothing else. Yet this unit does well by itself for non-critical listening, and I would gladly purchase it again. Happy customer, pleasantly surprised. ... show more

  • Quality speakers, ideal for desktop setups
Color: Real Walnut Wood Veneer
I’m in a relatively smaller room (approx 12’ x 16’) and have a corner setup for a mix of both work and play. I wanted to declutter some wires from my setup while pursuing a solid quality sound/bass on the desktop end of things. Hours of research led me to audio engine and more specifically their hd4’s. At first I was pretty hesitant about paying a couple of hundreds dollars on quality desktop speakers but after receiving these speakers I quickly began to understand the price tag. The sound quality on these guys are amazing from just about any angle in my room. They are both minimal in design and setup, which I am a big fan of and the wooden finish quickly grew on me. I only have one usb wire running from one of the speakers to my computer, the power cable, and the connection from active to the passive speaker — which is a great improvement. On top of that, the low latency Bluetooth works like a charm; ideal for when I am not actively on my computer (or on my work laptop) an am looking to play off a device such as my phone. The only minor downside (and this is more out of pickiness) is the omission of desktop speaker stands which can help angle your speakers slightly upwards for enchanted listening pleasure. It’s not a deal breaker since you can get them from audio engine on the side ($34 bucks last time I checked) but I feel that at least some alternative to these stands should’ve been included given the initial price. Overall, very happy with this purchase and look forward to these lastime me quite a while. ... show more

  • Nice Speaker
Color: Real Walnut Wood Veneer
The AudioEngine A2+ are really amazing speakers, but I just miss that bass a little, so tried the HD4. In my opinion, this HD4 speaker added bass, but at the expense of the highs and mids. Not that HD4 is extremely bass booming. It kind of muddied everything. I am going to stick with the A2+ and just add a small subwoofer. The HD4 is a great 4-inch woofer speaker, but not $180 nicer than the AudioEngine A2+. ... show more

  • Great Sound and Quality, but drivers don't work as expected with Mac's
Color: Real Walnut Wood Veneer
Sound and build quality are great, better than my edifiers which is what I wanted to upgrade from. However, when you plug the speakers into your mac via USB, normally in the sound preferences you can control the L/R balance and as it works currently you canNOT. I asked for support and they basically said it's not their fault, they use Plug in Play drivers and hopefully there would be some future update to fix the problem. I asked when the update would happen and they didn't know. Depending on your desk setup you can't always place the speakers equal distance away from you, which is why L/R-out is important, the fact that you can't and their team is made from someone from Apple was quite disappointing. The received answer of 'just use the 3.5mm jack or download/find an 3rd party app to adjust your sound output'[paraphrase]... not great. If that's the answer why don't you put that in product description then? ... show more

  • HD4s are nearly great
Color: Black
Good dynamics and plenty of power compared to the extinct B+W MM-1s, my favorite computer speakers and the ones I used previously. However, the Audioengine HD4s are boomy out of the box. They improve after a lengthy break-in but still need equalization to achieve a neutral sound. My search continues for a successor to the wonderful colorless sound of the Bowers & Wilkins. Warning: If you use the audio controls on your keyboard, you will find the mute control works but not the gain. You can adjust volume only through through the speaker knob or OS controls. ... show more
