I decided to upgrade from my Edifier S2000 Pros, which are terrific speakers but offer no subwoofer connectivity. Even without the subwoofer, the a5+s are smoother, have a better presence in the midrange, and are not as shrill at the high end. However, adding the S8 subwoofer takes it to another level. Fantastic sound. I like the convenience of Bluetooth streaming high quality mp3s from my iPhone. While I love many different genres, especially jazz, classical music seems to be the true test for speakers. I have the Equalizer Fx app on my iPhone. While it takes a while to load the playlists from my library, the wait is worth it. This allows fine tweaking of playback. Playing different versions of 'The Rite of Spring' showcased the dynamic presence of the a5+s, especially when the string section mimics drums at the beginning of the second movement (Dances of the Young Girls). Now that I'm working from home, I wanted some top-notch speakers for my desk. I did quite a bit of research and after finding the A5s coming out on top on site after site I decided to go with them. First impressions: Wow these are HEAVY, which clued me in on their quality. Setup was a breeze, everything was included. I read a few reviews saying they needed a little time to "break in" a bit and indeed the first day they were not quite as impressive as I had hoped. I made sure to give each song a little extra volume than what I'd usually have it at. I was also worried that I should have got the subwoofer too because the bass was not as punchy as I'd hoped. The next day: The next morning I put on a song and it was clear the speakers were now READY. Such rich, full and clear sound from these speakers! No headphones can match these bad boys- the music is felt through your whole body and it's like a concert right in front of you. That punch from the bass that was missing was now present. Simply put these are the best speakers I've ever owned and I didn't expect to have better sound than my car stereo puts out. So cool! Pros + Warm, rich and clear sound and you'll really *feel* the music + Look really cool and modern/futuristic + Very easy setup, everything included + Don't need a receiver or amplifier to get LOUD, distortion-free sound of these. Cons - I'd still recommend a subwoofer but probably just something basic to gently compliment these. It's hard to fault here because they are not really meant to be an all-in-one solution given their size but they are SO CLOSE to being that. - The shiny-ness of them kind of makes them look like they're plastic/cheap at a glance. I wish they were less glossy. Very minor issue though, purely aesthetic. Final Verdict: I'm very happy with these speakers. I will be recommending them to everyone looking for speakers for their home or office and I'll also recommend an entry-level subwoofer to go with them just for a little extra bass. ... show more

Speakers met my expectations! Speakers have a very nice look. They do not come with speaker grilles but look very nice naked. Very easy to setup and recommend placing speakers a 3-4 ft apart. Will maybe look into speaker stands in the future. Speakers are loud and have real clarity in the highs not too much bass but provide a punch when needed. I found they sound better when listening at medium and higher volumes. I use them primarily with my Pro-ject Debut Evo 2 turntable. I have noticed that I have had to restart speakers after activating Bluetooth mode with my phone. I hear a low thumping noise that will clear up after restarting phonobox and speakers. I bought the desktop speaker stands that help reduce vibration. Speakers are heavy and have a quality feel. The remote included is heavy duty and the mute function is a useful feature. When my Bose Companion 3 failed a few months ago when the power supply died, I needed to find a replacement. I always had a very high opinion of the Bose unit, and I wanted to get something with comparable sound quality. The Companion 3 is no longer sold in the US, only the Companion 2 is, so I had to look elsewhere. After researching the reviews and ratings of the possible replacements, I decided that the Audioengine A5+ was likely to be the best choice for me. When I received the unit and listened to it for a while I decided that it sounded a little thin--I was hoping that a subwoofer would not be needed--so I added an Audioengine S8 subwoofer. This helped quite a bit, but I eventually decided that there was a somewhat too little sparkle at the high end as well--of course, for those who like their music on the mellow side, this might not be an issue. Adding a software graphic equalizer allowed me to fix this problem. I believe it is pretty well optimized now and my computer speaker system is nearly as good as the Bose was. I don't really view this as disparaging the A5+ but rather recognizing what a superb system the Bose was for the $299 (I think) that I paid for it in 2008. I had to spend well over $800 to get something that only approaches it. -- (10/26/2023) I have an update. After tweaking the equalizer again, I can say that the speakers are now at least as good as, and perhaps a little better than the old Bose system was. ... show more

These are great speakers at a great value. I already had a lot of quality audio equipment that is connected with a Sonos system, but I was looking to add a simple system that could be used in my bedroom or office. My criteria was for something wireless (to avoid clutter), powered (so I didn’t need a separate amplifier) with high quality sound in a small package. The Audioengine A5+ Wireless Bookshelf Speakers definitely fit the bill. Packaging – the speakers arrived very well packed in a double box (plus the Amazon shipping box). The speakers, remote, and wiring were each in their own micro-fiber draw bag. Right away I could tell that this company cares about their products. Remote – the Amazon listing did not include a photo of the remote at the time of purchase, so finding the remote was a great surprise. The remote control is milled from a solid piece of aluminum. It has a good weight to it and screams quality. The button assembly can be removed to easily change the battery – super cool! Bluetooth – these speakers are powered and operate via Bluetooth, so you can stream music from your phone or computer. I was able to connect with my phone from more than 50 feet away without problems. Wire clutter is reduced because the speakers are powered (no amplifier or additional cables). The only wires are the cable to supply power to one speaker, and the high-quality speaker cable (with gold plated banana plugs!) that both come included. Sound Quality – these speakers are great. My initial set up was in my kitchen which is open to the living and dining rooms. The speakers had no problem projecting high quality audio throughout the space without sounding weak or muddy. Next, I moved them to my office (around 10’ x 20’) and the quality was awesome, exactly what I was looking for. I sometimes take a break from work and play an acoustic guitar to music, and the speakers were easily able to keep up without getting anywhere near max volume. Overall an A+ ! ... show more

So I'm not really an audiophile, so you should read other reviews for sound quality. However, I don't think my use case is all that uncommon and these are a great solution, so I wanted to share. I have two laptops on my desk -- my work laptop (Macbook Pro / M1 Pro) and my personal laptop (Macbook Air / M1). I also have an Echo Dot nearby. I want to be able to play great-sounding audio from any or all of these sources at the same time. I'm often working while listening to music or watching a video on my personal laptop. Then I have to watch a video or have a video conference on my work laptop. I also often lie on the bed and listen to music through my Echo Dot, or sometimes my phone. So I wanted a powered speaker that could take 3 audio sources at the same time, play from any or all of them, without needing a mixer. The Audioengine A5+wireless is fitting this perfectly. I use wired connections for the laptops, and a bluetooth connection for the Echo. The speakers sound great no matter which sources are playing, and the speakers even mix the bluetooth with the wired playback! It's a solution I've been looking for, for a long, long time. Also, the bluetooth connection sounds better than any bluetooth speakers I've tried, and the pairing works quickly and solidly.     • Powerful Sound with Limitations

These are advertised and reviewed as desktop speakers but they are not and more like home audio speakers. They’re so heavy, I need two hands to move them and they’re huge! I was surprised to see how big they are and won’t fit on a small desk so if you’re looking for desktop speakers like I am, look elsewhere and get something smaller and more portable. Another issue I have is second speaker require wiring to connect. This is so inconvenient and I’m a bit spoiled by Sonos which allow you to place speakers anywhere near outlets. I’m also spoiled by fact I can turn on Sonos on my PC, shut computer off and music wud keep playing then go to my iPad and shut the music off. Can’t do that with Bluetooth since you have to go back to origin device for this and once you shut off origin device, music stops. That said, I’m having issues with Sonos Amazon software since I’m severely limited without their music subscription and this is a downer and where Bluetooth is better and more universal since it’s not tied to any specific software. The sound from these speakers are quite huge and amazing and will fill out a room. More powerful than Sonos but only if you can live with these limitations. ... show more
