Description

The AT33PTG/II dual moving coil cartridge features a Micro linear stylus that, with its small curvature radius, delivers low-distortion, high-range performance, even when playing the inner circumference of a record. The Micro linear stylus, which has an average life span of around 1, 000 hours, is mounted on a nude tapered boron cantilever with a double damper for reduced weight and better audio quality. The cartridge’s two coils provide excellent channel separation and are affixed within a strong, lightweight mold made of hard resin to greatly reduce unwanted vibration. The cartridge uses a neodymium magnet and a permendur yoke for dramatically enhanced magnetic energy. The PCOCC (Pure Copper by OH no Continuous Casting) coils ensure pure audio transmission.

  • Great MC
A great MC cartridge that isn't super expensive. It tracks great with low surface noise. It doesn't exaggerate anything. It simply gives you what's in the grooves. AT cartridges are a bargin compared to other brands.

  • Outstanding value
My only other real MC experience before this cartridge was a Dynavector 20x2L, which costs twice as much as the PTG, and honestly this cartridge kicks the stuffing out of it. Everything I’ve always loved about AT’s moving magnet carts (which I’ve been using for years and years) is here, with great clarity, evenhandedness, and speed, just turned up an extra notch. The sound is incredibly transparent; in classical music each instrument really shines in its own space and everything from winds to brass to strings has a sense of texture that you can’t get from a moving magnet. In rock music, the bass is tight and crisp and the percussion alternatively snappy and shimmery when it needs to be. My old Dynavector’s sound was “richer”, but much less even, and with a narrower soundstage; here, for half the money you really get something great. Some caveats and quibbles: the installation is slightly annoying as the PTG uses a bolt and washer design rather than captive bolts; for this reason alone I considered the OC9, but that would’ve been a bad match for my Pro-Ject Classic EVO tonearm. The cantilever here is also tiny, great for sound quality due to lower mass but harder to see for lining things up, and it makes you sweat a bit with concern over snapping it. Still, install and initial alignment was up and done in about 15 minutes, which isn’t the worst. Your mileage will also vary based on your phono stage, as is always the case. I run a Cambridge Audio Duo, which is at a fixed 100 ohm impedance, and think it sounds great, though everyone’s ears are different. In terms of backgrounds and clicks, I will say the Dynavector I had prior seemed to reject noise much more effectively, but this also came at the loss of top-end detail; the PTG is not especially forgiving of bad records, so I’d recommend pairing it was a good record cleaning machine and not running dusty bin finds on it straight out of the sleeves. All in all if you’ve been on the fence about an MC and this cart matches your arm (always check your compliance first!), I would pull the trigger on it. The ML stylus lasts close to 1000 hours, so even though this is more expensive initial purchase on than, say, a Hana EL or a Denon, you will likely get significantly more mileage out of it before trading it in. With the huge amount of vinyl I listen to (all day working from home), that’s value! ... show more

  • The best setup in it's price range
I love this cartridge. I don't have many hours on it yet but it already sounds amazing. I'm looking forward to hitting that 30-50 mark and really seeing what it can do. Let me start by saying that I was running a retipped Denon DL-103 with a nude eliptical stylus and that has been a great cart. I love the 103 motor. The Denon may be better than this cart, but the microline stylus and boran cantilever pushes the AT over the top. Detail is incredible. Tracking is spot on. I don't play dirty records, but the older stuff sounds fresh. I can tell that the stylus is getting deep into the grooves. Installation was a snap. Maybe 15 minutes to install the new leads, cartridge, correct overhange and align. I set the counter weight to 2 grams and we are off to the races. Clear crisp highs and a punchy detailed bottom and not boomy. It's a very nuetral cartridge so no need to make alot of adjustments in your sound. It let's the mix of the record do its job. Audio Technica has always built nice products for the price and this little jewel is no exception. If you're looking for a new cartridge combo and you're budget is within $1000, please take a look at the specs, watch and read the reviews. You will love it! ... show more

  • Sounded really good, but the channel imbalance was unacceptable
Mounted on a Rega Planar P3 and run through a Luxman E250, the AT33PTG/2 sounded really good. Tracking was absolutely excellent. Bass was decent, highs were crisp and clear, mids were good. But I noticed immediately that the left channel was louder than the right. I checked alignment several times, even took my Planar 3 to an authorized dealer and had them check alignment, everything was dialed in. The channel imbalance was still there. Moved the cartridge over to an Audio Technica ATLP7 which has more adjustability than the Rega, still the same result. Swapped the leads and the imbalance moved to the right channel. Pretty much narrowed it down to the cartridge being the issue. An internet search did turn up some other complaints about the AT33PTG/II having channel imbalance issues. I broke out my Waxwing phono preamp that has the ability to check and adjust cartridges for imbalance and no matter what I did I couldn't dial it in. The Waxwing showed a 2 decibel difference between the L/R channels on the iPhone app. If you have a preamp/amp that can adjust for the imbalance, fantastic! Things will sound good and you're golden. But in my case I didn't, so had to return the AT33PTG/II. ... show more
