Top Amazon Reviews

  • Excellent compouter for the money
Size: A9-9400 8GB+128GB / Ubuntu
This review is for the ATOPNUC mini PC with AMD A9-9400 processor with 2 compute cores and onboard graphics, with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of disk space and Ubuntu 20.04 pre-installed. I'll cover my impressions and assessment first, and a problem I had - with the resolution - at the end. The device is incredibly small and lightweight; it nearly fits in the palm of my hand and while I haven't weighed it, there can't be more than a few ounces here. The case is plastic, but at this price I wouldn't exactly expect stainless steel. It includes all the ports I need and then some. This is an outstanding little machine - *for what it is*. It won't win any speed contests, but would you really expect that for $120? Other reviews have complained that it doesn't handle games well, or doesn't have enough storage to use as a file server, both of which are ridiculous expectations for a dirt-cheap mini PC. That said, for a basic Linux desktop machine there's a lot of value here. For typical office tasks and web browsing it works very well, and I'm even using it to run another Linux distro in VirtualBox. At this price point it's unrealistic to expect more, in my opinion. Video can be a bit laggy, in that window dragging isn't particularly smooth, nor is scrolling around in Google Maps, for example. That's at least partially because 4K video is only supported at 30 Hz refresh; it gets better if resolution is reduced but even at 4k it's perfectly workable for desktop tasks, and YouTube videos look fine. I'm using this machine to try out various Linux distributions. It worked fine with Ubuntu 20.04 out of the box, and I was able to easily upgrade it to the latest Ubuntu, 23.04. I installed Linux Mint 21.1, which I'm using now, with no issues - and performance is a bit better than with Ubuntu 23.04. The issues I had, which may not mean much to those who just want to use it as shipped, involved booting from a USB stick, which is necessary to install new Linux distributions. The first step was to get into BIOS setup, but I found I absolutely needed a wired keyboard to do that - even with a wireless keyboard using a USB transceiver to connect (as opposed to direct Bluetooth) tapping F2 continuously from power on had no effect. After buying a cheap wired keyboard from Amazon, I was able to get into BIOS setup and change the boot device order to put USB first. Which led to the second issue - even with USB first in the boot order the machine would blow right by it and boot from the internal SSD. I fixed that by disabling Fast Boot in BIOS. With that change I'm able to boot a new Linux distro from a memory stick, try it out, and install it on the internal SSD easily if I choose. As a bonus, I don't need a wired keyboard to get into BIOS setup anymore. Bottom line - I'm very please with this purchase so far. ... show more

  • Cheap and Portable, but not the best.
Size: A9-9400 8GB+128GB / Windows 10 Pro
Wanted a mini PC to hook up to my TV and stream videos to. Worked perfectly fine with downloaded video files, but has a bit of a loading time when trying to surf the web (or stream 1080p YouTube videos, for that matter). Really cheap though, so that's a plus.

  • Neat little machine does all
Size: A9-9400 8GB+128GB / Ubuntu
After logging in to my Linux powered AtopNuc MA90, decided I did not want to wait for a 660+ MB upgrade to download. Had no trouble accessing the device's BIOS where I set it boot from USB using a L....tech wireless K400r keyboard and M325 mouse. Rebooted with LTS Xubuntu 22.04.3 on a USB stick. After installation, everything works like a charm. It works with every monitor I have connected it to. I have experienced no issues with the audio - I used headphones connected to the 3.5mm audio receptacle on the front of the box. I have connected to three other PCs on my network using ssh. It really is a neat little machine. It was a good buy. I have three photos to add. One that shows the whole system - MA90, wireless wireless K400r keyboard and Logitech M325 mouse, headphones, and monitor (29 inches wide), second is view from the rear showing power cable, HDMI cable, Logitech wireless dongle, and Cat5 internet cable; third is a view showing 128GB microSD card inserted. ... show more

  • Cute little unit. Cute doesn't perform.
Size: A9-9400 8GB+128GB / Ubuntu
Didn't care for Ubuntu OS, so installed Mint. Works great for what I need it for, which is more of a typewriter/storage device. Added an external drive for backup and it has been working satisfactorily since. The WiFi could be faster but since I don't use it for games, the slowness is less of an issue. I have an old TV I use as a monitor and the resolution is sufficient to let me work from across the table. All in all, I am satisfied with this purchase and will probably purchase another when the time comes. UPDATE: Probably best this unit is no longer available. While trying to transfer some files to another drive, the transfer rate fell off to below 5 kB. You read that right. Below 5 kB transfer rate. Thought it might be my multiple USB port so I used ONLY the USB 3.0 ports on the unit. Same thing happened. Large transfers slow to a crawl when it should at least maintain 3.0 speeds. Both drives are Hard Disks, so it isn't even the slow down often seen with SD and Micro SD cards. Is this how those manufacturers get away with making an inferior product? Offer it for a low price then when it doesn't live up to the hype, they close their doors and go away? Sure. What a way to run a company. You are not help, Amazon. You should be holding these companies accountable. But I'll be long gone before that happens, right, Bezos? Maybe I'll think twice before buying TECH from here again. ... show more
