  • Bumpy Install With Ryzen 5700G
Style: Motherboard
I've been a fan of Asus motherboards, I pretty much use them exclusively anymore. They tend to be built well, last a long time and perform well. I'm not generally an "early adopter" of brand new tech, so I was a bit surprised when this mobo provided me a bit of troubles. I selected this board for my Unraid storage server rebuild, finally replacing my 11 year old AMD Sempron 145. I paired it with a Ryzen 5700G and 16GB of Corsair LPX memory. (Both on the compatibility list.) For cooling, I went with the trusty Noctua 12S. On the power side, I decided to upgrade to a fully modular EVGA 650 watt G3. The build was pretty standard overall and came together mostly as expected. A 12-bay storage server build can always throw a few wrenches, especially since I decided to re-use my 11 year old case. The rear horizontal SATA ports were a super tight fit against my 4-in-3 drive bays, but I got the job done by pulling out the drive bay, installing the SATA cable and then re-securing the drive bay. When I fired up, I was surprised to get no boot and a vague "DRAM" error on the LED's. Fortunately, I'm a veteran PC builder with decades of experience, but this situation might deeply concern a novice builder. After double checking my RAM was fully seated and technically isolated (trying 1 stick, 2 sticks, different bays), I suddenly became super glad that this motherboard had USB BIOS flashback features. This allows upgrading the BIOS without turning on the PC. The process is described in a technical guide on Asus' website. Sure enough, after updating the BIOS to the latest available on Asus' website, I booted just fine. I was a bit surprised by this, as the 5700G isn't exactly a brand spanking new CPU at the time of my build. (November 2021) This is the first time I've had to do this on an Asus board and I usually don't get bit by these things since I'm not a super-early adopter. I have two other Ryzen 5000 series builds, but I'd admit that both those used the "Pro" variant of this generation motherboard. Overall, I'm quite happy with the build and the motherboard turned out all right. If you're a novice, I wouldn't not buy this board out of concern for BIOS support of your CPU. The process isn't really that hard or technically challenging. If you can copy a file to a USB stick and press a button, you can do it. I really just wanted to throw up my review in case it helps future builders. The DRAM LED error didn't indicate the trouble in my case. I also think USB BIOS flashback is a super helpful feature, almost a must anymore with motherboards. Good board, but 4/5 for a few bumps. ... show more

  • Need to use BIOS Flashback to flash BIOS for 5800X (and maybe other 5000 series processors)
Style: Motherboard
First off, I'm glad I bought this board. With new processors coming out all the time, it's inevitable that a processor will not be supported by the available BIOS as it was manufactured previously and sat on a shelf for a while, so an update is needed. In the past, this would mean that you would need to have a compatible processor to use just so that you can flash the BIOS. Thanks to the Flashback feature, you can flash the BIOS even if your board won't POST with the processor you have installed. Here's what you need: 1) Get the firmware version from ASUS that will enable support for your processor, run the renamer and store the renamed file on the root of FAT16/FAT32 formatted flash drive. 2) Turn off the PC, but leave power connected. 3) Plug the flash drive into the appropriate USB port, which should be labeled on the I/O shield. 4) Push and hold the Flashback button for ~3 seconds until it starts flashing. 5) If it starts flashing faster, you're updating and need to wait for the flashing to stop. If the light goes solid, it means the process can't run (likely due to incorrect flash file on the USB) so you need to check and try again. 6) Unplug the flash drive and power on. Hopefully you'll meet with the same luck I did and get a familiar BIOS screen. Now to the actual review: PROS - Trouble free (barring the expected hurdle of potential BIOS version not supporting some processors). - BIOS Flashback is the type of QoL improvements that keep me coming back to ASUS. - Included heat shield for M.2 drives. - BIOS options and management software offer multiple ways to OC and manage/monitor your operation. - Plenty of fan headers. - I can control the onboard lighting via my Corsair iCue software, which is convenient. CONS - MINOR grip: I wish it had one more USB plug on the board. It has 2 and one is being taken up by my AiO controller. - Details for the flashback procedure were not in the paper manual, so I had to dig online to find the information. Overall very happy. This is the 3rd TUF series board I've bought (Sabertooth R2 for my old OC'd 8350, 450 Plus for my wife's 2700X, and this 550 Plus for my 5800X), and I will continue that trend until they disappoint me. ... show more
