Description

RT-BE96U is ASUS’s first 802.11be tri-band WiFi router that provides a better user experience in gaming, AR/VR and IoT applications. It works with the latest 802.11be technique to improve throughput of each user, especially in dense deployment scenarios by supporting up to 320MHz bandwidth and higher order 4096-QAM modulation to provide higher WiFi speed – 19000Mbps. Disclaimer: Actual data throughput and WiFi coverage will vary from network conditions and environmental factors, including the volume of network traffic, building material and construction, and network overhead, result in lower actual data throughput and wireless coverage.

  • Great, fast Router
Size: Tri-Band Style: 19.0 Gbps | 10G Port
Last update 7-12 Running as advertised, without the issues I had with the first unit. Fast and great range. I will be implementing the new ASUS BQ16 pro mesh in my house this week and will write a full review. Update 6-30 It's been a wild ride. Just after posting the review on the 98U, it died. I tried reloading the backup, factory reset and nothing. This is where thing really took a turn. I had to "chat" with Amazon to return the router and they finally issued the shipping label. Seems that it's only buy or return when it came to this unit. I went and purchased another. Here is where the glitch in the Amazon matrix's comes in (it has happened more than once to me). Always follows the same pattern, deliver day was moved up by Amazon. On the delivery day it showed out for delivery and never showed up. New delivery day is now two days out. On the delivery day it shows out for delivery and again never shows up. I get a note from Amazon saying wait a day and then I can return it. I waited the day and go to return it and talk to support. All I really wanted to do is get a replacement. I finally talk the support type to replace it and he does, it arrives two days later. The new one has been up for a week and is work as advertised. Still love the unit. I have tested the speed on both my Mac Mini and my Linux Mint devices and it is averaging 20%+ fast for comparable workloads on my prior 6E routers. Update 6-15 I've had the 98u for 24 hours, solid, quiet and works as advertised with predictable results: - I continue to run test on the speed. However, so far it looks to be at least 10 -15% faster than the 96u, YMMV. - Normal daily operations, Non-Cached web browsing, Slack, Signal, Email seems feels faster especially web surfing. - As measured using openspeedtest (HTML5 and HTTP) is faster than my prior ET-12 and the 96U. Again YMMV I removed a node from my mesh ET-12 (7 node) system in the house and added the 96U. Working well and my son is happy to finally have a cool looking router and he says it's faster (and tested it, I guess I'm rubbing off on him?). Yes this is a mix of Wifi 6 and 7 and I have plans to replacing the ET-12s with the BQ16 Pro if ASUS ever gets their heads out of their corporate keisters. Update 6-14 OK broke down and purchased the BE98U for my office mostly because my son saw the 96U and wanted it for his setup. I plan on running the 96U in a mesh setup when the ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro gets here (I'll address this when I review the BQ16s). Anyway, configured the 98U; start to finish 5 minutes. So far: - Feels faster - I'll get stats on this today - Nice LEDs (I don't care but I'm sure there are gamers that will) - Better web UI with a nice status page - Advanced configurations UI mirror the format on other Asus hardware. Big plus here! I'll get some time with it and update this review. Overall I'm please with it. Update: 4/23/2024 Finally an update. Mostly fixes including security with some functional additions. As I mentioned before, updates are measured in months. Update: 4/3/2024: The BD96U has been rock solid no drops. Still no software update since December, not uncommon (unfortunately) for ASUS. Updated 2/16/2024: So far Wifi 7 has been a strange ride. First I've been in networking for over 30 years and have contributed to and watched it grow up. I have a separate (from my house) office on it's own network. Here I implement what will eventually go into my house. My first attempt with Wifi 7 was the disastrous TP-Link BE95. In a nutshell, nice hardware but everything else was a train wreak. Software, UI, Security, subscription model and privacy were awful. Now normally I buy and use the eventual hardware I would be using in the main house for my office first, but this time I pulled a crazy Ivan, I bought the BE96U. I wanted the BE98 but it's not available (right now) anywhere unless you want to pay $1300 on Ebay (at the time of this review). I plan on implementing the ASUS ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro when it becomes available for my house. Oh and just for reference, I have owned and used Orbi, Linksys, TP-Link and now Asus. The BE96U is replacing a single Asus ET-12. The ET-12 worked very well but it's time to move on. Here are my impressions of the BE96U so far: Pros: - Implementation was easy 9and for someone that breaks EVERYTHING that says a lot) - Web client and Web interface was something I was used to and the options are fantastic (as a network guy) - Web UI is straight forward and to the point and does a very good job of implementing mid-level functional implementation - Great advanced features, features the other providers hide. These advanced features gives the user the opportunity to exploit the full potential of the unit. Hear me TP-Link, Orbi and others? - Mobile client is very good - 2 10G ports - Wireless coverage inside my office and all the way into my main house is very good - No subscriptions for basic features the other vendors make you pay for. IMO this is pure GREED - It's FAST Cons: - The unit is big (I knew this going in). Beast mode. - As with the ET-12 and ET-8 software releases are measured in many months. This is good and bad. However, IMO newer hardware and software should error on the side of more frequent updates. Release early, release often. - 1G ports? Your competitors moved to 2.5G, so should you. What is ASUS thinking? - Where is USB C? I move very large data sets, video etc. daily around as part of my job and it's fast. As I measure, faster than the ET-12. I have the extra 10G port going into a 10G switch. I applaud ASUS for not yielding to the subscription model their competitors have gone all in on. ORBI, TP-Link and the others should be ashamed of themselves for charging for basic features and poor software. The BE96U is working as advertised, no network drops since I've had it and I don't have to think about it, the ultimate goal of any network. It just works. I will be updating this review as I get network time under my belt. ... show more

  • Stable Thus Far
Size: Tri-Band Style: 19.0 Gbps | 10G Port
Initial impressions are that it is a powerful, speedy router with many possible configurations. I got it as a replacement for the older Netgear Nighthawk AX12. In my setting, the range is similar, but this Asus edges out the Netgear slightly. Apart from from learning pains about what kind of connections my wireless devices crave, the router wasn't particularly difficult to setup. I didn't get it for is wired abilities, but if you want many of the fastest wired ports, look elsewhere to the BE98 Pro or the BE88U. Still, it has several ports. I did get it for a more stable wireless experience than I was getting from the Netgear Nighthawk. The Nighthawk was stable, but no more. So far, high-res streaming to a twitchy Denon network streamer is solid. My other devices aren't dropping and reconnecting. Everything is working, and that's really all I'm after. That, and avoiding an expensive mesh network that would have cost lots more than this single unit and for less coverage. The real downside thus far is that I can't wall-mount the router. I had to build it it's own little shelf. And... it looks like an enormous dead spider on its back. So much so that my wife has taken to calling it Ungoliant, the giant and evil spider companion of Morgoth in J.R.R. Tolkien's book The Silmarillion. Literary allusions aside, I am concerned that any router bans that go into effect March 2027 could make it difficult to get firmware updates for this unit. To my knowledge, Asus does not yet have exemptions from the U.S. government that would allow for future support. Still, I'm going to get the router I prefer, not cater to the company that I percieve is the most red, white, and blue. ... show more

  • DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!
Size: Tri-Band Style: 19.0 Gbps | 10G Port
I had to give this product 1 star because Amazon will NOT!!!!! let you leave 0 stars. If I could I would give it a NEGATIVE 5 stars!!!!!!! I was an IT Professional for more than 30 year, and this is one of the WORST home routers I've ever had to deal with. This "thing" is poorly designed, has incredibly unstable and unusable software for the USB functions, and just loses its mind randomly. I would be using it, and it would just turn off all the Wi-Fi (2.4 gig, 5 gig, 6 gig, and WiFi7) for no reason. You could look at the configuration screens, and it would say that they were on, but they would not transmit anything. The Media Server would just go on and off spontaneously. When any of these things happened, you could only do one of two things. Reboot the router or unplug the power to it for a minute or so and plug it back in. I have spent a week working with this thing and I can honestly say that even though I used to always recommend ASUS products to ALL of the thousands of customers I have had over the years, I will now be recommending to EVERYONE to stay away from anything ASUS. Trying to configure the Wi-Fi is a nightmare because of the way ASUS has spread the Wi-Fi configuration out it places that are not related to Wi-Fi. Used to be you would go to the Wi-Fi section to configure and manage the Wi-Fi, but not on this "thing". As soon as I can afford to buy another brand of router, I will be replacing this useless hunk of cheap crap. There are so many things wrong with this router that I am not going to spend the hours it would take to type it all out, but if you want to use any of the advanced features like MAC filtering, DO NOT BUY THIS "THING". It might be okay for a basic home internet that doesn't care about security or a reliable internet connection. This would be a great router to send to Putin, but other than that, STAY AWAY. From everything else I have been reading about online about the way ALL!!!!!!!! ASUS have had a vulnerability for hackers to use in BOT nets among other things, I would just not buy anything with ASUS on it. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... show more

  • A little expensive, and takes some time to perfect, but works great!
Size: Tri-Band Style: 19.0 Gbps | 10G Port
So we purchased this to replace a RT-AX88U that worked well but started to not keep up, and wanted to update to Wifi 7. Setup was easy, but to configure it perfectly took some time. I run this Dual WAN with load balance. I eventually turned on MLO and setup a guest WPA2 network and a "IoT" WPA2 network. MLO isn't supported in Linux yet, and only in 24H2 which I would not upgrade to. My MLO speeds were only slightly better testing. I may revert one day, but I got everything working now, so why reinvent the wheel. This is on a AiMesh with two other HARDWIRED Asus routers, all with battery backup packs. I also had to tweak the professional wireless bandwidth channels as well. I rarely have to reboot this router. The RAM is usually at half capacity. I have around 35 devices and our network slays through them. I did not have an issue with Ring cameras like the other guy did - IPV6 and WPA2 helped with that (See IoT network above). Many devices do not connect to WPA3, probably was most of the problems listed in the other reviews of people who didn't understand. MLO is only WPA3. Dual WAN is even better on this device (Although most I select a specific WAN for, and will swap over when needed), I've had less problems with it on this. I have tried AiMesh on wireless only, and it gets difficult rebooting the ecosystem on such. Wiring them makes it SOO much better, smoother, and devices pick the correct device without a bunch of manual assigning. I will say this router is complete overkill for 95% of people and would not suggest it for them. Get a Wifi 6 router with some decent processing power and you'll be fine. If you have some intermediate knowledge of wireless frequencies and networking, this thing is an absolute beast. Wifi7 is overkill, 6Ghz is nice but only good at VERY close range with no walls (Mine as well plug in Ethernet) and MLO has very little support yet. But if you want top of the line consumer router with configurability bragging rights, and plenty of cash to blow on it, Then get this router. ... show more

  • Incomplte feature sets, half baked product BE96U
Size: Tri-Band Style: 19.0 Gbps | 10G Port
Here are some practical feedback after used for two weeks of Asus BE96U, I am a long time user of Asus routers and I have no intention to bash their products, I want to give you my honest user experience after using the BE96 for a while: 1. It is an early rollout of the Asus Wifi7 router, it is not the best of the state if the art, if you are for this type of things. 2. Performance is good, 6ghz is decent. 3. For Wifi 7, you can very much skip the MLO, it is not stable and can cause a lot of problems in a mixed client environment, I have to turn off the MLO front hauled option to support non client 7 and IOT stuff. 4. Asus has this 'isand mentality' of product marketing development, I could not understand why they are providing 1g ports, while people buying this product usually will have 2.5g bandwidth requirements, they give you two 10g ports but the rest are all 1g, it tells you how out of date their product marketing is. 5. The unit is bulky and the way they put all the controls and ports seems to be an afterthought, when you move this unit into a tighter spot, you can very easily turn off its LED display or worse it's power, the Ethernet ports are up and down stacked facing opposite orientation, and I can not figure out why they want to put the insertion in opposite direction, it is counter intuitive, and create a worse experience if you try to insert a cable after the upper port is occupied. All in all, a middle tier product with a premium asking price, you can do better with other models or products, Asus is just getting too full of itself to consider what their customer really wants and properly design the product features and execution of firmware to satisfy their customer's needs. ... show more

  • Excellent performance and speed — held back by software frustration
Size: Tri-Band Style: 19.0 Gbps | 10G Port
This has been a powerful, fast router and the core of a great home network. Paired with a ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro as a mesh node, it delivers outstanding Wi-Fi 7 speeds and solid, reliable coverage throughout my two-story home. On the hardware and raw performance front, I have zero complaints — it's been a strong performer. A couple of things keep it from five stars for me. First, the firmware situation. I'd love the option to run open-source alternatives like OpenWrt or DD-WRT, and that support just isn't there for this model. If you're someone who likes full control over your router's software, you'll feel boxed into the stock ecosystem. Second, the AiProtection security feature has been overly aggressive in my experience — to the point where it blocked legitimate devices on my network from reaching the internet. That would be more tolerable if whitelisting were easy, but the controls for allowing specific devices or exceptions are limited and clunky. I ended up wrestling with it more than I should have. None of this undoes how good the hardware and performance are. If you mainly care about speed and coverage and you're fine living within ASUS's stock firmware, this is an easy recommendation. The software flexibility and security-tuning limitations are the only reasons I'm landing at four stars instead of five. ... show more

  • Great for a large family with a lot of devices.
Size: Tri-Band Style: 19.0 Gbps | 10G Port
I got this to upgrade my existing Linksys EA8300 Max-Stream set up as we were running into issues when streaming and gaming from multiple devices. This router has great connectivity through the whole house and has resolved the issues we were experiencing. Looking at other router options one of the other deciding factors was the parental controls that are included with the router at no extra cost. The set up was easy and the additional features over our existing router have been a welcome improvement. The Parental controls can be set up for specific devices. The added network protection has also provided some additional piece of mind. It is expensive, but I was able to purchase this router for $450 on Amazon when it was on sale and is definitely worth the money, I paid for it, however I am not sure if I would the pay full price of $550 for it and would have shopped around for other options. The only complaint I have received from everyone in the house is that it is big and looks like a spider. I have yet to hear any more complaints on lag or connection issues which was my goal. ... show more

  • Excellent Option for Power-Users
Size: Tri-Band Style: 19.0 Gbps | 10G Port
My house is just large enough that it could probably use a mesh network. However, I'm pretty picky about network security, so configuring a multi-node setup that I was happy with would be be expensive, time consuming, or both. I'm running the Asuswrt-Merlin firmware, which has been pretty much bulletproof. This is the first home router I've owned that doesn't occasionally lock up and require a reboot, and I'm pretty sure that's because I'm NOT running the stock firmware. Most of the negative reviews seem to focus on the firmware, either its interface or stability. If you have this or another Asus router and have problems, I strongly encourage you to go to asuswrt-merlin[dot]net and see if your hardware is on the supported list. I specifically chose the RT-BE96U because of its compatibility with third-party open-source firmware, and I'm really glad I did. For me, this router is the ideal compromise between cost, capability, and ease of use. I don't want the administrative overhead (or price) that comes with professional grade hardware, but I do want reliability, lots of features, and maximum configurability. This unit fills those requirements just about perfectly. On the other hand, if you just want something that you can plug in and have it work, this may not be the router for you. It has capabilities that you will never be able to take advantage of unless you dig into the menus and configure it for your use case. If spending an evening setting up your router doesn't sound like a good time to you, save your money and buy something less fancy. ... show more
