  • 2 Years Later...
Style: i7-9750H | RTX 2070 | 144Hz
PROS: I bought this laptop 2 years ago, and it STILL performs just as well - no sorry, Better than it did out of the box. I went through the effort of debloating Windows 10 (not Asus' fault, just Microsoft's weird data fetish) and I've never had a problem. I rarely game, but the games I DO play are insanely graphic intensive and the Zephyrus plays them at Ultra quality without so much as a single hiccup. Elite Dangerous, No Mans Sky, GTAV, RDR2, Skyrim Remastered, it doesn't matter. What I do use this primarily for is Music Production, Video Processing and Graphic Design, all of which are obnoxiously resource intensive but seem to be second nature to the beauty of this beast. Ableton does tell me how much CPU is being used, and with all of the plugins and instruments I have running through it I rarely ever break 35% CPU without the charger plugged in. Also, I love that the webcam is detachable. Sacrificing camera space for screen space was a smart move. It didn't take me more than 5 minutes to get used to the unique Keyboard layout on the bottom as well. I've been able to do everything without so much as a strain on my wrists or fingers. Honestly, I don't think I'll go back to a Laptop with a traditional keyboard/trackpad layout unless I absolutely have to. The screen by the way is immaculate. Pantone really outdid themselves with the color and light quality. My eyes have never felt a strain from screen brightness, and the issues of glare are a thing of the past. My final Pro on this computer (I could actually go on) is that I had drunkenly been making music one night, held it while walking up a hard wooden staircase in a thin hallway and dropped it. My baby (lid open) fell down the entire flight of stairs and when I picked it up the case only had a scratch on the top of the plastic screen frame (I like to think it gives it character now), but the Screen and all of the lovely motherboard guts within were completely fine. Okay I lied, I do have ANOTHER Pro and this is my final one, I promise. I forgot about this entirely (funny, because no other laptop could have withstood this) but I was eating a bowl of Japanese Noodles in a hot soupy broth one night, accidentally knocked it over and the bowl landed directly on the keyboard, spilling the hot soupy broth inside of it. I panicked. I got insurance for this laptop when I bought it but I'm honestly not entirely sure where I put the information or how that even works and this thing's my baby. With haste I quickly grabbed my tools, cracked it open, and when I got to the keyboard I noticed I couldn't actually reach it without removing a light metallic tray that housed the keys. "The Light Metallic Tray that Housed the Keys". When I noticed this, my foot popped like Jean Harlow in Red-Headed Woman, I swear to god my shoe almost took the window out, ejecting from my appendage at unprecedented speeds. That light metallic tray saved everything. I don't know if that was its purpose, but by George that's exactly what happened. To this day all of the keys work, none of them stick or lag in registering, and the LEDs all work just as well as they did the first time I powered it on. Okay, now to the Cons. CONS: I did have to change the battery once after a year, and it was extremely difficult to find one for this model. It worked just fine if it was plugged in, but disconnecting the charger shut the whole computer down (which corrupts the read/write data your OS is performing if you're not careful. I fried an external hard drive because of this). I had to order one from China on E-bay. It wasn't too terribly expensive, but it took a lot of digging to find even that. When I tried to get ahold of an ASUS customer service representative for more information, not only were they a quest to find in their own, but they told me to go to Best Buy who, oddly enough, also didn't have batteries for this laptop. The detachable webcam IS a huge plus, but the quality of the webcam wasn't all that great. Don't get me wrong, it's still better than what was stock even 5 years ago but if you plan on using it to stream yourself playing games or talk to your family then make sure you're in a well lit room or at least have a light shining on your face. Battery Life? It's not that great if you're doing anything intensive, but that's to be expected. If you're in the position where you need to have it unplugged, don't plan on gaming for very long. You'll get maybe an hour or two before you need to find a socket. This one's for my Linux people. Initially, I wanted to run Linux on this computer. Which was fine (as long as you're not manually building your repositories as you would in Arch), but where I met my match was with Hardware compatibility. I haven't checked lately (being 2 years later), but when I first bought this laptop and tried to install any Linux operating system on it, the RTX series of Graphics Cards was still very new and none of the distributions were built to handle the 2070. So for the very few distributions I actually WAS able to visibly install, I was still faced with various problems from Graphics Capabilities to complete and total inability to connect via Wi-fi to anything, which really put my ethernet cable-ridden self in a corner and forced me back to Windows. Again, I haven't tried this again in a couple of years. Perhaps a lot of Linux distributions are friendlier to the newer hardware that's in this computer, I can't say for certain. I have it running perfectly right now anyway, and I have a spare laptop for my Linux distro so I'm content. My last and only real issue with this computer is that it's only got one audio output jack - which doubles as a Mic and a Headphone. Now this was an issue for me specifically because I make music, and that involves needing access to both an external Microphone AND Headphones. I can't produce with a Gaming Headset. I cant knock the design or Asus for this, because after all this is built to be a "Gaming Laptop", so the regular Gamer wouldn't need to separate the two. But, as a music producer I had to initially find a Splitter on Amazon, which Windows 10 was really weird and suspicious about until eventually I just bought a USB Interface and that fixed all of my problems. Oh! That reminds me Final Pro/Con: I'm stating this as a "Pro" because it comes with Three USB 3.0 slots, but also a "Con" because if you're like me and your primary use requires plugging in various external hardware then I'd suggest investing in a cheap USB Hub. I got the thin Sabrent USB 4-port Hub here on Amazon and it was not only inexpensive, but the latency between hardware and software wasn't even noticeable at all (which I credit to the hardware within the Zephyrus) so.. I win. Final Conclusion: I had already planned on adopting this baby as if I'd built it myself, and I treat it as such. Personally, I crack her open and give her a checkup once every 6 months where I'll just go through a mass uninstallation spree, double-check what I have running at Startup through Task Manager, and make sure everything's securely connected and dust-free, re-apply thermal paste (which I've only done once, and not because I "Had" to but because I Wanted to) and she's been running consistently top-notch from Day 1. Even the Motherboard (from Day 1), upon every inspection has NEVER had so much a speck of dust on or wear on her. I also like the Red, it's a nice touch. I put stickers on the Dashboard above the keyboard (by the way don't do that too much, because those porous holes are actually top ventilation for the fans) and the computer does run hot, sometimes almost scolding to the touch. I play guitar and have built callouses on my fingers, and there are times I can only keep my fingers on the dashboard for less than 3 seconds. HOWEVER this is not very often, only happens when I set the Armoury Crate into "Turbo Mode", and I've faced this consistently for the last 2 years and it's never effected the performance - nor has it it remained hot for long. I've gamed at the highest temps for more than 9 hours a day for weeks on end, and it's always room temp to the touch not 10 minutes after I close my intensive habits. So Asus, if you're reading this, you'll never get this baby back. She's mine, keep your paws off her. I bought the insurance, but I'm typing this 2 (almost 3 now) years after I bought her and I'm honestly still just as in love as I was from the first day I slipped her out of the conveniently (and aesthetically pleasing, btw) box she came in. The Pros heavily outweigh the cons, and your purpose may be different from mine. Regardless, you need to have one of these. ... show more

  • Light and powerful! All around incredible!
Style: i7-9750H | RTX 2070 | 144Hz
I've had this laptop for some time now and I've tested it with different games. So far this ASUS gaming laptop eats everything at ultra settings that I've thrown at it! - The screen is really incredible and the bezels are so small that it just looks like one whole screen! - The keyboard is weird and unusual - but seriously, I actually prefer this over the conventional keyboard now. It is super easy to get used to and works very well! - it is super fast and powerful, eating everything I throw in its way in terms of software and games! - The design is incredible and very, very sturdy. Very beautiful! - It doesn't weigh much and I can't believe they managed to pack so much power into this given its low weight and thin frame! Some complained about a missing integrated webcam, but seriously, who evens use their webcam on their laptop nowadays? The one that you can plug in that comes with the laptop works great! The only downside is that the fans can get very loud during gaming, and that the battery life is somewhat poor even during normal work - but thats to be expected. I considered every other brand before getting this one - and I do no regret it! 5/5!! ... show more

  • Monstrous power in a light and attractive form factor
Style: i7-9750H | RTX 2070 | 144Hz
I purchased this laptop for myself as a birthday present about 6 months ago. I was in the market for a new gaming laptop and I was ready to put down some money for it. I researched several different brands and specs. I knew I wanted it to have at least a 2070, with a 144 hz screen. HDD space was important and so was the CPU. This hit all those marks, and the full size RTX 2070 Mobile definitely tipped the scales. On top of that, there was a discount on the price, so it was a no-brainer. I pulled the trigger and eagerly awaited. About 3 days later, the package arrived. The laptop was well packaged and a lot of care was put in the presentation. I pulled it out of the packaging and it was amazing to hold in my hands. It didn't feel like a 17" laptop, but here it was. I went right into downloading as many games as I could on it. And while they were downloading, I went to work messing with the settings and putting it through its paces. Everything ran buttery smooth. I liked the details in the ROG Armoury and spent some time playing with the lighting. I played some videos and enjoyed the very very nice screen. It seriously is wonderful, my only gripe is I wish the brightness were a little higher. Other than that, it's a beautiful display. I started running all the games I had on it and setting the graphics to ultra on everything I could. Not even a hitch or a stutter. It ran through all the games like they were nothing. This was really what I had been looking for. I bought an extra stick of RAM that I've been too lazy to install, but I might not even need it. I'm gonna pop it in, but the laptop is that fast. The only issue I had was with the speakers. Random videos would pop and crackle. Some games would hiss and crackle on lower frequencies. I tried all the troubleshooting but nothing worked. I contacted support and they had me go through the script again before deciding this would be an RMA. When it got to that point, I was a little worried. This was in March of 2020, so the lockdowns and quarantines had just started. They did warn that it might take a little time to get parts, but that was ok. I had Animal Crossing, so I could wait it out. The process was much smoother than I was expecting. They sent me a FedEx label to attach, so I boxed it up and sent it away. They have a site you can use to track the status of the process. I could see where they were while it all went on. In all, they had my laptop for about 2 weeks. It was shipped nicely, and they also threw in a few nifty things with it, like a little metal puzzle. That was a really nice touch. Throughout the whole process everyone was very friendly and helpful. My laptop is back, and I'm working on setting it up again. I couldn't be happier with the purchase and the support from Asus. I'm very glad I got this laptop and will be giving more of my business to ASUS in the future. My desktop is about 8 years old now.... ... show more
