Top Amazon Reviews

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The reviews for this product are mixed, with some customers very satisfied with the GPU's performance and the device's gaming capability, especially when paired with ROG Ally. Users appreciate the portability, the boost in gaming performance, and feel that the device offers a good price-to-performance ratio if purchased around the $700 mark. However, others have had significant issues with the device's reliability, including multiple reports of DOA (Dead on Arrival) units and failures after a few weeks of use. Concerns about proprietary connectors and system stability are also noted.

Pros

  • 🎮 Significant upgrade in GPU performance for gaming
  • 🚀 Enhances portability with extra power when paired with compatible devices
  • 💰 Good price-to-performance ratio at around $700
  • 🔌 Docks and undocks smoothly according to some users

Cons

  • 🛑 Several reports of units being dead on arrival or failing shortly after purchase
  • 💸 Product may be expensive on certain listings compared to MSRP or other retailers
  • 🔒 Proprietary connector limits compatibility with non-ROG computers
  • ❌ Potential for system instability and crashes when used with certain configurations

Should I Buy It?

If you own a compatible ROG device and are seeking a significant GPU boost for gaming, this may be a suitable purchase, especially if you can find it around the $700 price point. However, the reported reliability issues and potential system instability are red flags. Caution is advised, and consider purchasing from a source with a reliable return policy and warranty in case of any issues.

  • ROG Ally with a 3080... No complaints here
Style: RTX 3080
The media could not be loaded. So, every negative comment I've ever seen about the XG mobile with the ROG Ally was pretty much false for me with one exception. The fan is loud under full load but my sound is usually set louder. I don't understand the negatives here. I even tried to break it and see what the problem is. It docks and undocks just fine. It's ridiculously powerful. I have the desktop version and I honestly am 2nd guessing even owning a desktop right now. Granted, I'm playing at 1080p on a mobile monitor but the FPS is perfect for pretty much all modern games on ultra. I'm using an SSD on USB as extra storage for games and it works fast as expected. I thought I'd be pissed about no USB C but the version of USB A is still plenty fast for SSD gaming. I am returning this one from Amazon because I bought one direct from Asus shortly after for much cheaper. I don't understand why they're so much higher on Amazon. Be patient and pay MSRP through Asus. The 6850 should be $799 and the 3080 should be $1099. Just create an Asus account and click notify on the product. They'll email you when in stock. Lastly, I saw complaints about the pcie X4 vs x8 speeds blah blah blah. Supposedly there's lag with keyboard and mouse. Total bs. I don't know what speeds they are but my FPS are typically around 90-100 on CoD and I have no lag on my keyboard and mouse. It plays like a desktop PC. I'm using all ROG gear for my setup down to the mousepad. I average around 60 FPS on CP2077 with the RT Ultra preset @ 1080p. That's hella good for a modular mobile gaming setup. ... show more

  • Super expensive but better than universal egpu
Style: RTX 3080
I combined this with the i5 z13 asus gaming tablet and it works very well. I compare it to an amd gpu I combined with razer core x egpu, and I think the asus proprietary system is better performance and more stable. I was debating keeping it because it's so expensive but decided to keep it since I got my gaming tablet pc for cheaper on woot.com. Pros: - very compact laptop ver 3080. Easy to transport as needed in luggage or a backpack. - doubles as a pc dock has everything i want except usb c. - proprietary connection is better performance and stability than other universal egpu in my experience. - easy to upgrade drivers with Nvidia software. Cons: - so freaking expensive def wait for amazon sales. - fan gets super loud in full turbo mode. Headphones is almost a must. - temper your expectations. It can't run everything at 4k 60fps ultra settings. On a samsung HDTV I typically have to set 1440p 60fps with Nvidia frame generation with older aaa titles like last of us, red dead reception 2, cod modern warfare etc. Works well for 2k gaming. I can get 75+ fps ultra setting at 1080p but prefer higher 2k res vs more frames. - I think they're discontinuing the proprietary connection? The newer refreshed asus z1 extreme handheld gaming pc ditched it for usb 4 c connection. If true then this and the 4090 version should be cheaper! Smh! ... show more

  • First order, DOA; second order, also DOA
Style: RX 6850M
When i first got the X13 Flow, the NVidia-based XG Mobile failed after a couple weeks. I had to send the laptop in with the XG Mobile because apparently they don't have any spare laptops at Asus repairs. The replacement XG Mobile failed after a few weeks but i didn't bother RMAing the replacement XG Mobile since i needed the laptop. I was delighted to see that the new AMD-based XG Mobile was available on amazon. First one was DOA -- the X13 would receive power from the XG Mobile, but armoury crate would never prompt to switch to the XG Mobile like it was supposed to, and no fan noise whatsoever from the device itself. Asus wanted me to RMA the unit, but i just returned to amazon (because I am not an idiot). The replacement i ordered which i just tried to plug in, is also DOA. I think they must wear those really big shoes in the ASUS QA department and use a lot of pancake makeup because that place is a total clown show. ... show more

  • Really steps up game performance
Style: RX 6850M
I usually only run smaller games on my ROG ally but recently I wanted to play Helldivers 2 and space marine 2. This eGPU runs them both great.

  • Good upgrade for an Ally - but be aware of misleading / inaccurate listings
Style: RX 6850M
I purchased this to pair with the ROG Ally. The 2023 version is based on a RTX 4090 which is overkill for the Ally (might as well get a PC for home) but the 2022 RX 6850M seemed just right. This had been out of stock FOREVER. When it did get back in stock it was expensive ($840) but I jumped at the chance. That was a mistake (see later) but I am very happy with the GPU. I have read reviews where others saw issues with it not connecting, etc but it has worked flawlessly for me. The huge upgrade in GPU performance has been great and makes a good overall package: portability with some extra kick at home. Around the $700 mark feels right, any more expensive and I think you can get more bang for your buck. The negatives were more on the Amazon/Seller side than on the product. It wasn't until it arrived that I realized it was USED - no indication on the listing. I spoke to Amazon who offered to return it for a refund, I checked and there were two in stock which were $629 (cheap) and they were not listed as used, but based on what I've seen I suspect they were. But within a hour or so they were out of stock. Ideally I'd return it because $840 is too much for used but I cannot find it in stock anywhere. In my previous experience Amazon has been great with customer service and returns but in this case I was very disappointed with how they handled it. ... show more

  • Doesn't really make a difference, very unstable.
Style: RTX 3080
I have the ROG Z-13 with the i7 and 3050, and the 3080 doesn't really do much for gaming. It does however de-stabilize your system and cause about 10x as many crashes as without. Really disappointed.

  • The only thing holding this back is the proprietary connector (STO DOING THAT!!!)
Style: RTX 3080
The only thing keeping this from a perfect score is that it uses a connector only found on a select few ROG computers (luckily the ROG Ally is one of them.) This turns the ROG Ally into a tru Steam Deck killer and complete desktop replacement. Get rid of the stupid ASUS-only connector and you have a perfect eGPU and dock. ... show more
