Quick and easy setup, including the prompted firmware update at the onset of configuration steps. Speeds are lightning fast and rock solid; we're finally able to take advantage of our 1gb Internet connection. Coverage is strong and complete throughout a 2250 sq foot, 3 floor residence - placed in the approximate center of the house. Replaced an aging/failing TPlink AC1750 (C7) that was good while it lasted and up until we moved to 1g/1g internet and added a small army IoT devices over the past year. As expected, this runs circles around the C7, easily sustaining our dozens of connections, including a household of 6 that all stream over wifi on computers/tablets/phones, including several streaming boxes on various TVs in the house. Coverage on the old TPLink C7 was a relative strong suit vs some other routers we'd had -- the Asus AX86U solidly levels up on that with even better coverage and ample performance and signal strength over 5GHz in every room of the house, including the back deck. The C7, but contrast, would more quickly fall off 5GHz performance and signal strength, driving us to frequently use 2.4GHz on the back deck and a couple of the bedrooms. Modern devices are also now able to take advantage of the improved capabilities of the 2.4 and 5GHz bands on the Asus. All-in-all, this router has proven to be the best router we've ever had, in every aspect, and it's been absolutely rock solid and reboot free since it was installed. Time will tell, of course, how it fares over the longer haul but as of right now I am incredibly happy with it and that I waited for it to become available. It has fully lived up to the early-review reputation.

I am thrilled with the performance of the RT-AX86U. During simple installation the new AX86U stock firmware was immediately updated to the latest stock version. I configured with basically the same settings as my older AC68U with the exception of the Wifi settings which left AX support and auto frequency selection and 160Mhz channel support turned ON or enabled. To ensure worry free maximum compatibility with my older AC clients I have temporarily turned the Asus Smart connect feature OFF and set encryption for WPA2 with AES instead of the default of WPA3 even though WPA3 is suppose to be fully backward compatible. I will enable it when I own some newer Wifi 6/WPA3 clients (such as the new PS5). I also turn WPA OFF since I never use it. The overall speed, reliability and range to my older AC clients has excelled using the new AX86U. I no longer get range related Wifi issues in the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz band that I sometimes had before with the AC68U and previous generation routers. The signal strength and data throughput speed has increased substantially at farther ranges (three large rooms away on both levels) to my notebook computer to the point where the there is practically no detectable difference using Speedtest.net between a direct wired Ethernet (using a CAT 8 cable to the notebook and from the router to the modem) and wireless performance on a 100Mbs Internet service (I get about 10ms latency and over 107Mbs download/11Mbs upload on both). On my other 200Mbs service that I use it also maxes out and exceeds the advertised download/upload throughput. The range for both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz covers an entire 2 level 2K sq. ft. home with thick plaster and some concrete walling. I don't use the USB ports for external storage so I can't comment on their performance. At this point I can highly recommend the AX86U to anyone upgrading from most of the older Asus AC routers with the exceptions being owners of AC routers that are using the newer BCM (Broadcom) 1.8Ghz chipsets and newer Wifi radios. The owners of those newer models of Asus AC routers who use mostly AC clients may not see as much benefit to an AX86U upgrade. I still would recommend the AX86U for its enhanced gaming features with a specific LAN gaming port, extra 2.5GbE Ethernet port (configurable as LAN/ main WAN or as part of a Dual WAN with the main WAN port) and USB 3.x compatible ports. You wouldn't have known this at first glance but the AX86U features 1 internal antenna in addition to it's 3 visible external antennas. It seems this AX86 is a more mature and stable AX/Wifi 6 solution for Asus enthusiasts. There is so much more that I haven't covered here such as the enhanced gaming features, security and antivirus features, etc.. I have just scratched the surface of what this router can do. The AX86U is the most feature enhanced Asus router I have owned to date. Unless you are waiting for the next models of Asus routers supporting Wifi 6E (Wifi 6 with 6Ghz band support) this is definitely a Wifi 6 router to consider. A week after my first purchase I have purchased several more Asus AX86U routers for business use and those are also showing exceptional performance and reliability.

I bought this as a replacement for the increased distance, WIFI 6 support and WPA3 . We currently have two devices that support WIFI 6. My current 68u only covered about 1/2 the house and necessitated a range extender. I no longer need the extender. The 86U now covers the first and second floors. The 86U is located in the basement. To install and configure it I used the utility to back up the 68U configuration to a file and downloaded the current firmware. I also did screen captures of my 68U configuration since I had never used the configuration save utility before (as a precaution). I then shutdown my 68U. I used a RJ45 cable to attach the 86U to my laptop via one of the LAN ports.. Rather than using the "quick setup" I loaded in my saved configuration file. Once the router reinitialized I then updated the firmware since the 86U came with back level firmware. This process took about 15 minutes. I used the screen captures to verify my customization's came across to the 86U. I can say the configuration save utility worked flawlessly. My only change was to update the host name from RT-68U to RT-86U. I then compared my customization screen shots that added about 15 minutes. All of the new features of the 86U (not found in the 68U) defaulted to the factory settings. So in all it took me about 30 minutes. My only mistake was that when I placed the 86U in place of the 68u and turned it on it would only connect to the internet for a few seconds. I had not powered off the cable modem before attaching the 86U. I powered off the cable modem and the 86U. I then powered on the cable modem and allowed it to fully initialize. I then powered on the 86U. This time the 86U connected to the internet and has remained so for 4 days with no problems. I have not used smart connect so my 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz are separate. I have not tried WPA3 since some of my devices only support WPA2. Also if I want to implement a mesh network with my 68U as a node it only supports WPA2. But with the better range of the 86U I may never need to implement a mesh network. My two devices that support WIFI 6 do indeed connect at the faster speeds. I did not power off any of the laptops or phones and they reconnected correctly ( the two that support WIFI 6 used it with no intervention by me). So based on my experience so far I am very pleased with the 86U and would do it again. It is a worthy replacement my 68U which I had for 5 years with no problems. So far I have found no cons to report. I will update this review if I run into any problems.

Setup is a breeze and he easiest, If your previous is a ASUS router, Save the config file and load it, into the this router and all your connected devices are up and running.. you change the settings to whatever you want too.. after, No need to go and change network password on 100 devices. Everything from your older.. Including all the registered devices.. network Ip, parental control.. etc (saves a ton of time) 2. Those who are having trouble connection issue/disconnecting with this RT-AX86U router after IOS 14.2 updates and >, For Apple Devices like Iphone 7 or > models and IpadAir2 or > models.. Please change the following, Under WIFI SSID's from your Device.. Press the circled "i" next to each SSID you are trying to connect too or connected too.. and Turn the "Private Address" option "ON", Should fix the the connection issue.. But this not an issue on other apple devices other than Iphones7/> and IpadsAirt2/> 3. Apple started using different MAC address for each SSID you connect too starting from update OS14.1 and > .. If you have a MAC filter turned on your router to connect to your network you may have to register each MAC Address ID generated by your apple device for each SSID (2.4 and 5.0GHz) and If you have multiple "WiFi(SSID) names" or multiple Spots you may also need to add all different MAC ID generated by your apple device connecting to each SSID's from your Device.. To find each Unique MAC address, Press the circled "i" next to each SSID you are trying to connect too.. and Turn the "Private Address" option "ON" and you will see, a unique MAC Address.. Add that MAC address to your MAC Filter to allow the device to connect to each SSID, should fix your apple device connection issue.. Remember "Apple" is well secured, but painful to introduce this new feature. 4. Overall the router is strong and good, Some old devices may have hard time connecting too WP3 and WIFI6 enabled.. I would say open up your "Guest" Next work and down grade from WPA3 to WPA2 or down grade from WIFI6 down, with restrictions.. Should resolve the internet connectivity issues. 5. But some devices can still support "WIFI6" and work stable and should not have no issues.. If you are gamer, ensure to upgrade your WiFi card to support WiFi 6 on that device.. Otherwise this router will block you left and right, When you apply mods and port forwarding with your friends, But for normal browsing and streaming from paid/subscription sources, this router should work seamlessly without any issues. 6. Parental Control timing has some serious bug.. MAC ID filtering is not supported on "IPV6", Since IPV6 use a very long "MAC ID", MAC ID Filter only works on "IPV4" setup... Need an software update to fix it.. You can only restrict devices by MAC ID address on IPV4 setup..When setting up Parental Control, Found a Series bug defined the hours in the software, Which has 25 hours a day/2 entries for 12:00am (24:00 hours and 00:00 hours both same). Which causes the software to choke and fail, Has some serious bug/headache issues.. "ASUS" please fix this, This causes the parental control/restriction to NOT work correctly, due to 24:00 hour and 00:00 entries being the same, confusing the software time management to fail miserably.. The work around is to have "2 entries" for each device.. one entry for example "Device A" should have time restriction from 20:00 to 24:00 (Midnight) and the same "Device A" should have 2nd entry from 00:00 to 06:00 for the parental control to may be work properly, Sometime it works correctly, still unstable and in testing... It is a serious bug.. (The drop down options for each device entry is confusing with "disable", "block" and "time", Please provide help.. Recent new firmware update, allows 15 minute increments, which is nice finally they added this feature, but could not able to test it, Due to two 24 hour entries in the time bug.. earlier software options, did not allow 15 mins increments now it does. 7. Since Apple devices keep changing their MAC addresses randomly by SSID.. Not just this router, any router in the market will be challenged, to restrict web sites and time restrictions, instant messaging and Internet usage for Kids, due to multiple MAC ID's for each SSID's.. Use an external parental control app and control it using Master "Apple Id". 8. Good Area Coverage, So far works great, no issues.. All features and there are lot of apps offered by ASUS.. Still I am exploring.. No comment, Until I Use or Master their free apps offered on the app stores.. 9. Great and Good options like Old but robust NAS SERVER, MEDIA SERVER, USB, Printer, VPN etc and new dedicated 2.5GBps LAN PORT, Dedicated RJ-45 Game Port,options.. like most of the features in their previous predecessor models.. Hope the future updates will bring more stability to some of the unstable software bugs.. Overall the router is stable and good performing device. Little expensive for a Broadcom 1.8Ghz BCM4908 Chip.. Others offer a snapdragon 865 processor for $100.. May not have a good UI interface.. but WIFI6 and other basic features.. 10. Registering this device on ASUS Website.. Seems to be a little challenging as well, When you browser for Router models on ASUS website.. you see all different routers are under "Network" Category... But when registering, You will NOT find it under "NETWORK" Category, But Instead you will find it under "WIFI" Category.

I have a previous iteration of this router, and wanted to upgrade for several reasons, mostly to take advantage of wifi6 and better speeds available. 1. What's in the box?: You receive the router, antennas to be assembled, power adapter (this has a small brick), and instructions and such. 2. Set-up?: Since I already had an ASUS, set-up could not have been easier. Basically you connect to the internal wi-fi signal and using either the mobile ASUS app, or using a laptop as I did, it takes you through the set-up. Unfortunately, I couldn't just transfer my settings, but I did use the existing named networks for both 2.4 and 5 G signals, so this was pretty quick. Everything else I would recommend taking notes to write down personal settings on things. Once I put the networks names in place, everything connected right to the new router without any problems whatsoever. Since my older router was still very much functional, I decided I would take advantage of the AI mesh system. This also couldn't have been easier. I simply went to the AI mesh after plugging in the router, it linked up and away I went. This gives my house great coverage and I especially like that I can bind certain devices to one router or the other so that it doesn't switch those devices to a router ai don't want to use. Perfect! This made my decision to purchase a new router easier to stomach. Use?: Well, like my other ASUS router, this works without any issues. No drop-outs and I get a string signal. As well, I like that I can use the mobile APP to do most things, including setting my VPN's when needed for a router wide purpose. Overall?: Love the ease of installation, the look is nice, and I like the 2.5 GB port which gives this some future proofing for faster speeds. I love the app, which makes making changes on the fly easy as well. This is a really good product.

The bad: The UI on this router and the corresponding app use up a lot of CPU and RAM resources. With nothing connected except the device used to configure it and no services running except DHCP the RAM is at a constant 43% utilization. Some of the translations make no sense and you need to toggle settings to determine if the statement on the UI meant the setting needs to be on or off for the option to function. You must use the internet port for initial setup. You have to guess at how to turn the 2.5Gbe port into the WAN port. There is no documentation on this and the UI does not make it clear. At. All. The good: I get my provisioned speeds, setting it up is easy if you don’t want to use the multigig Ethernet port for the WAN connection. Wi-Fi coverage is decent if the antenna are angled correctly. AIProtection is a nice feature to protect your entire network from intrusions and infected hosts. It supports AIMesh which turns many ASUS routers into repeaters or access points which breathes new life into old equipment. With AIMesh you can put your old router on the edge of this router’s Wi-Fi coverage area and the old router will boost that signal further out into previous dead zones. With an Ethernet connection you can turn old ASUS routers that support AIMesh into standalone access points which is a fancy way of saying a Wi-Fi antenna and switch in a different area of the house than the actual Wi-Fi router. This option would give you full speeds of the Wi-Fi or wired connection without throttling. The only thing I’d change is to have two 2.5Gbe ports. One for the WAN/Internet connection and one for the LAN/network side so you don’t need to set up link aggregation or compromise on where your bottleneck will be in a gigabit or faster connection. As a mid range device in a market with an increasing amount of modems utilizing 2.5Gbe ports and MSOs offering gigabit tiers it makes sense to offer one multigig port for the modem and one for a computer or switch. Bottom line? Grab this when it’s on sale if you’re looking for a new router or want a quality access point to add to your network.

I read a lot of reviews about this guy and had high hopes for its performance. It lives up to its expectations performance wise but setup was not as simple as I had hoped. Let me explain. This router has a ping time of 8ms to my ISP server, 9ms is the best I ever got with my old Linksys EA8500 [typically 10ms]. The 5G signal strength is simply amazing, considering the power demand for this unit is only 45VA vs. the Linksys 50VA. Stronger signal for less power? True, although I'm not certain where the efficiency increase occurs. The downside was the setup. Most WiFi Routers today are plug-and-play where you literally plug it in, turn it on, and viola! It works. Not so with this Asus. It first needed a firmware upgrade which it did perform despite it's complaint about no internet connectivity. After it completed the firmware upgrade, the router just would not permit internet connectivity although the admin page showed that it was up. Frustrating since the help was online [let me see, online help with a router that cannot get online. What's up with that?]. I tried several times powering down both this router and modem but to not avail. Putting the old Linksys back in, I was able to find the troubleshooting page for this and their recommendation was to do a hard reset [press the RESET button and wait, and wait, and wait...]. That did solve the problem and I'm glad it did. Browsing is *considerably* faster through my gigabit Ethernet [rough estimate of 2x] and my weather app on my cell phone displays in about a second rather than the 10 seconds with the old Linksys. Those numbers made me happy with this Asus despite the issues in getting it up and running. Lastly, a comment about the Amazon purchase. This item was supposedly in stock at a local Amazon distribution warehouse. I ordered it via Prime and waited for a tracking number. These typically appear 1-2 business days after the purchase; this one did not. Calling the help agent, I explained how dissatisfied I was with this transaction and sure enough, somehow the order had fallen into a "crack." The agent escalated the issue and I got the router two days later. If I had not called to find out the tracking number, who knows how long it would have taken. I am not a gamer but we do stream a lot of 4k. So far, so good. One last comment: my ISP [Spectrum} provides the modem [here an ET2251]. The Asus 2.5Gb WAN port is not compatible with this modem.

I’ve gone through so many routers. So many dropped signals. So much buffering. AA d these were even with the top of the line Netgear, TP-Link and even ASUS This router is great. No dropped signals in the past 9 months or so. Some video buffering but that may be from my ISP. I run AX on a number of devices. Good throughput. This router also allows you to run a system wide VPN through the router. I use NordVPN and it works flawlessly. So all my devices are protected via the router VPN to NordVPN with virtually no issues. The user interface is very simple and thorough. It supports the latest WPA3 and is backward compatible with devices that don’t Easy to set up MAC filtering if you’re so inclined I currently have over 60 devices set up with no issues. Cameras, FireTV, Roku, etc. no problems with multiple streaming devices Easy to set up IP reservations Has two USB ports that you can connect drives to to make them available over the LAN (or even make them accessible over the internet (if you’re so inclined) Overall great router that I’ve had no problems with. Which is head and shoulders above any other router I’ve had Tech Support: No problem reaching them on one issue. They were very patient and professional. User Interface: very good
