  • Scratched!
Size: 2" ED 2x High-quality Dual Power
It’s 3 stars just for this item not the whole store. I just received this in the mail about 10 minutes ago. Opened the package and the box was damaged, I opened the box and the lens was packaged well on the inside. However when I opened the inside packaging and took the covers off I see these scratches! I got back on here and did a product exchange and the replacement is due to arrive in just 2 days when this one took about 5. So I’m happy they expedited shipping on the replacement. The quality of the rest of the Barlow very good. Seems sturdy and well made. I can’t comment on how well the lens actually is at this time but I’m sure it will be just fine on the replacement. Over all, anything I’ve ever bought from astromainia has been great for the price. This will not stop me from buying from them. At least not yet. Update: The new one came in and it’s not scratched. ... show more

  • Great views with 2" eyepieces. Borderline useless with 1.25" eyepieces.
Size: 2" ED 2x High-quality Dual Power
This review is for the 2" 2x version of this product. I'll admit that I'm new to Astronomy, having acquired my first telescope - an Orion Skyline 8" - less than 2 months ago. With that in mind, I wanted to expand the magnifications I had to choose from, so I bought this Barlow. When used with my 2" 30mm Eyepiece, the magnification is great, and views are crisp and clear. So no complaints there. Where I do have complaints, however, is with the claim that this can be used with 1.25" eyepieces. I have three 1.25" eyepieces and only one 2", so I bought this Barlow specifically because it's advertised as working for both. Unfortunately, when using the included 1.25" adapter, I can't get any of my 1.25" eyepieces to focus - even at relatively low magnifications, like 160x. If I drop my extender (35mm) into the end of the Barlow, I can get close, but then I have to switch to a different 1.25" adapter because the one that came with the barlow is designed to slide into a notch on the Barlow, so it doesn't fit well into my extender. Even worse - at that point I'm adding so much weight to the end of the scope that I can't swap between using a 1.25" eyepiece normally and using one with the Barlow unless I pull the entire telescope off of the mount to adjust the altitude trunnions, or I crank them down so tight that it's difficult to adjust the altitude on the scope. I suspect these are problems that an experienced Astronomer would have foreseen and been able to avoid, but if it's barely functional with the adapter, why have the adapter in the first place? I'm giving it two stars for not working as advertised. P.S. I've discovered in another review that I can extend this Barlow by only inserting it partway into my focuser, which may allow my 1.25" eyepieces to focus. I haven't tried that yet, so I'm going to try it. If it works, I'll update this review to 3 stars because it technically functions, but with it being such a hassle to use, I don't think anything will convince me that this Barlow is worth 5. Edit: I'm very late getting back to this, but the workaround of inserting the barlow only partway into the focuser worked fine, and I've been using this barlow ever since to get nice views with both the 2" and 1.25" eyepieces ever since. This thing definitely doesn't deserve two stars, as it's a solid product, but I'm not giving it 5 because of how beginner-unfriendly it was to work with. ... show more

  • Removable Barlow element with 48mm thread is just what the Dr. ordered!
Size: 2" ED 2x High-quality Dual Power
I needed a Barlow element to use with a 48mm diagonal so my longer focal length 2" eyepieces would come to focus in an SVBony 102mm ED Doublet refractor. Between this, and an Astro-Physics Barlow (that also has T-Threads), this Astromania ED version (with no additional T-Thread) is the clear winner. With this one I can also screw the element directly to my Baader diagonal in place of the 2" nosepiece making for less overall weight, and a shorter optical chain to keep better scope/mount balance. NOTE: This Astromania has a longer backfocus distance than the AP Barlow. That can make a difference with certain eyepieces and/or camera setups. The AP Barlow was made for using T-Thread cameras/imagers, plus visual where the Astromania mainly visual use. But for my particular use, everything works and I can also use either one depending on what I may be doing, and which scope I may be using. Having Versatility never lets you down. 😁 ... show more

  • Bad Vignetting (hot spot in center, falloff on edges)
Size: 1.25" 3x Short Focus
I received the "new" version, but was disappointed with the vignetting. See the attached flat field image and daytime moon image which shows the (quite bad) hotspot in the center. It does provide the advertised 3X magnification, and I thought that perhaps the hotspot was an artifact of zooming my telescope that much, but later when I compared it to a 3x teleconverter I found that the hotspot was entirely the fault of the Astromania 3X barlow. If you decide to buy it anyways, note that it is "short focus" so you may need an extender depending upon your optical path to pull focus. ... show more

  • A customer made mistake
Size: 2" 2.5x Barlow Lens
The product enabled me to use a 2" eyepiece on a 1.25" telescope. My telescope is 1.25" and I needed this adapter to enable me to accommodate a 2" 2.5X Astromania Barlow lens on my 1.25" telescope. When the items arrived I tried it on the telescope and I couldn't get the Barlow lens to focus no matter what I did. I tried it on terrestrial which usually works quite well but it still didn't focus so I figured the setup I had was incompatible with a 1.25" telescope and sent it back asking for a refund. Now the product itself was fine. I'm sure it works great with a 2" telescope. The construction of the lens/adapter was great. It felt like it was made of metal; however, it was rather heavy as if it was made for a much bigger more expensive telescope. My telescope was neither. Like I said it was my mistake ordering something that I felt might not work with what I had. Would I recommend it to others? Yes. I'm sure it would work great on a larger, better-designed 2" telescope. Also, customer service was great and they issued a prompt refund once they go a notification from Khols (one of their drop-off points) that the items were turned over to them for shipping.
