Description

Providing an affordable entry into astrophotography, this nifty "eyepiece" camera contains a CMOS sensor chip with 8-bit output and RGB 24-bit color resolution. While not sensitive enough to capture images of deep space objects, the StarShoot USB Eyepiece Camera II enables you to share views of bright solar system objects and daytime terrestrial views of wildlife and scenery on your laptop or desktop PC. Our second generation USB eyepiece features improved resolution (640x480) and sensitivity over the original USB Eyepiece. With its fast frame rate of up to 30 frames per second (fps) you can use this very affordable planetary imager with your telescope to capture even fleeting celestial events such as occultations, eclipses, transits and more. Transmits live color images and video to your computer via the USB2 port. • The camera does work with Mac, the software will not.
I received this today and it's about what I expected, it's barely half a megapixel and not HD, but it's a cool addition to my celestial observations. That being said, I saw a lot of folks complaining that it doesn't work with Mac. It does. The software doesn't, but you don't need the software. I had zero problems connecting it to my 2018 MacBook Pro running Catalina. Use a USB-A to USB-C dongle if you're rocking the same I/O, otherwise, just connect using USB, and open QuickTime Player, then go to File > New Movie Recording and click on the carrot or arrow to the right of the record button. There, you'll have an option to switch to any camera connected to your computer. My StarShoot came up as Altair USB 2.0 Camera. Worked without a problem. ... show more

  • Better than expected image quality
The media could not be loaded. I'm using this Orion telcam mainly for terrestrial use, and it exceeds my expectations....probably because I was prepared to see relatively dark or grainy images, especially considering the high magnification of the camera -- I'd guess equivalent to a 5 to 7mm eyepiece. The best way I can describe it is with actual footage -- see attached video of a scrub jay on a power line (over 60 feet line of sight), recorded using the Orion cam on a Meade Infinity 70mm scope, and ContaCam webcam software (free, google it) which includes nice motion detection and snapshot features (Yawcam is another good program). The only feature I really wish the camera had is zoom (in the reducing direction), as the magnification is quite high especially for terrestrial viewing -- Would be great if it could zoom equiv. to a 5 to 25mm eyepiece. I bought the camera used, but as a regular paying customer. I was not paid or encouraged to write this review. ... show more

  • But bad handling is not
Well.. it is something about price and quality. This was a $49.00 purchase, I was aware of all limitations and reviews for this product. But bad handling is not, buy any chance, something that can be related to cheap price. I've got scratches and some marks due to bad handling when they sent it to me. As it did not incur in any malfunction of the eyepiece, I decided to keep it. But you know: things coming from China sometimes are like this. I just realized it is a simple 800 x 600 px CMOS webcam. Using it is equivalent to put a 5mm eyepiece in your telescope. I found it very useful that my Linux Ubuntu system recognized it automatically with no need of additional drivers. But I found that this cam has a lot of noise in the images during night sky observations and it maybe is OK for Moon, planets but not deep sky objects. I haven't tried the Windows software which comes with the product. The USB cable should be larger. Fortunately I've both an Orion 0.5 Focal Reducer and it worked fine with this eyepiece regardless of been told by customer's service that Orion does not have an focal reducer suitable for this Eyepiece... This way I could improve my field of view a litlle... ... show more

  • orion usb small video camera for astronomy
i dont recommend this camera low light. i am using it on a spectrometer with low light output of the spectra. when you run the camera in preview the video is sort of ok. but in low light and capture video mode it goes into ALL noise and the image is ruined. this camera might work on moon and planets or on the sun with solar filter.. the noise could be the clocking of the video and the usb cable into the laptop..win10pro.. ... show more

  • Disappointed with it
Disappointed with it. Let me start by saying that the camera I received isn't exactly like the one in the pictures, leading me to believe that I either received a gen1 or a knockoff. This camera has no option to take a picture, just video clips and the cd that came with it links you to websites that offer free software to "stack" the images into one. Even though, both the manual and online video say/show you can access options to zoom and change the camera mine offers none of that. The zoom my camera was set to was about what looking though a 10mm on my 8inch scope looked like. The picture quality was ok, but at that level the small section of the moon you do see flies by with in 15second. The software it links you to, to stack the images RegiStax 6 and "something else", were both designed by sadist. Wouldn't think "select files, enter and it does the stacking" would be such a cluster. Registax crashed every time about 5 min into it. Whatever the other program name was I could never get to even download correctly. Everything I own is made by Orion, but from what I have seen with this camera is don't waste your time or money on it. Get something more expensive and newer. ... show more

Hi I bought this as my first attempt at astrography I have an orion xt8 dob and use the orion am cap software I've had great views of the moon Saturn venus and etc but only problem is when I try and view jupiter it appears As a huge bright glowing orb I've adjusted settings as much as possible but can see to even get the slightest details of Jupiter I just ordered a 2xbarrlow and should be here in a week or so will this give me the detail of the clouds and colors instead of a giant glowing orb? And what are the best way to add just settings to view jupiter ... show more

  • A good camera for shooting planets and the Moon
The Orion StarShoot II is actually quite good for the price. Meant for planetary imaging, the sensitivity is more than adequate to get good, detailed images of our solar system. My current favorite is Jupiter, the detail of which has impressed fellow astrophotographers with my "Cheap webcam setup". Don't expect this camera to capture nebula or galaxies, as its sensitivity is too low. It's not meant for it. One annoying point is the USB plug on the camera. It fits loose and the camera will shut off if it's wiggled. I put modeling clay around mine so it won't come loose. ... show more
