  • Super Sharp Macro Lens If You Are Ready to Work For It
Size: for Sony E
Using this on a Sony E mount body. The lens is all metal and feels like a small brick on the camera. It is heavy but in a good way and does not feel cheap at all. Focus is manual only and there is no communication with the camera, so you set everything yourself. At 2x to 5x the details are insane. Tiny hairs on bugs, textures on coins, dust on circuit boards, all come out super sharp when you nail focus. The learning curve is real with this thing. Depth of field is paper thin, any shake ruins the shot, and you need strong light and usually a tripod or focus rail. My first few sessions were mostly misses, then once I slowed down and treated it more like a small microscope, the images started to click. For what it costs, this lens is hard to beat. It feels like a solid piece of gear, delivers crazy sharp results, and gives you access to a level of macro that normally costs a lot more. If you enjoy manual shooting and do not mind putting in some effort, it is a fun and rewarding lens. ... show more

  • Good performance for the money, great intro lens to macro photography
Size: for Canon RF
Packaging is very skimpy, comes just in bubble wrap and amazon bubble envelope, no box. Rings are smooth, but firm to prevent accidental changes. Image quality is good, especially for the price

  • Neat lens in theory
Size: for Sony E
The media could not be loaded. I was shooting a video for a marketing project and needed a nice macro lens. Although it's a neat lens for macro photography it's very limited in function. You have to be extremely extremely close to products. But it does bring out a really neat macro image. Just wasn't suited for my needs unfortunately. Would recommend for macro photography but not video. ... show more

  • The Laowa 65mm f2.8 2x macro is superior, get that instead even if you have a FF camera
Size: for Sony E
I already have the Laowa 65mm f2.8 2x macro lens (which is an aps-c lens) and I thought that getting this full framed 2x-5x macro lens would allow me to get much more detail in my pictures. But I find that the resolving power in this lens is pretty much the same as the Laowa lens. In a well-lit photo, the level of detail in the full frame 60 mp image I got from the AstrHori versus the aps-c 26mp image were very similar. In general I have found that with these "super compact full frame" lenses that are roughly the same size as their "equivalent" aps-c lenses, the final image quality will be similar regardless of the fact that you're getting more megapixels with the full frame version. Beyond megapixels and wider sensor area, the resolving power is also very important and good resolving power requires a lot more glass. That's why the top quality full frame lenses are always significantly bigger than the aps-c lenses. Through testing I have found that cropping the Laowa 65mm image yields roughly the same image quality as the 5x macro on the AstrHori lens. It's all about resolving power. The extra megapixels of the full frame matter only if the full frame lens delivers at equivalent or greater resolving power vs the aps-c lens. (I have done similar tests with the samyang full frame 50mm f1.8 lenses versus something like the sigma aps-c 30mm f1.4 lens--similarly sized lenses, but the ff lens sacrificed resolving power to be as compact as the aps-c lens, and they both ended up with very similar image quality.) Anyway, this is not a bad lens; it's just not the upgrade to the Laowa that I thought it'd be. It's largely redundant. The Laowa is superior because: *Resolving power just as good regardless of the fact that it is aps-c. *It can be used as a regular lens too whereas the AstrHori is strictly a macro lens. It doubles as a beautiful portrait lens! *You can screw filters on the end of the Laowa lens. This one has a weird front end where you cannot screw or attach anything to. AstrHori even makes a macro ring light (which I did not find on Amazon, but I found on eBay) that comes with an adapter for a 46mm front diameter, which you'd *think* would be compatible with this lens... but it is NOT! Super easy to attach a macro ring light (which is essential for taking good macro pictures on the go) to the Laowa, but, virtually impossible with the AstrHori without some workarounds and customization (which may void any warranties, especially if you glue something permanently to the lens). *For achieving 2x macro, the Laowa can be placed about an inch further back than the AstrHori lens. This doesn't sound like a lot, but when photographing tiny things, every inch counts! Disclaimer: I am more of a people photographer who dabbles in macro photography, though I am quite well versed in people and general photography. These are my honest opinions, but if you are a professional or aspiring macro photographer, you should seek the advice of a professional macro photographer. ... show more

  • Game changer
Size: for Nikon Z
Got this so I can take closer pictures of some crystals, but I didn't expect to get this great of a results. Things that you will need to know if that it's important to have a focus rail and a focus staking software to get the results that I have. There is no focus ring so the only way to get the overall picture is to focus stake. overall It's amazing the level of details that this lens can produce. Build quality is top notch for the price range, all around metal body and metal connection ... show more
