Description

AprilAire introduced the first evaporative humidifier for forced air furnace systems back in 1954. Since that time, AprilAire continues to lead the industry in whole home humidification systems. Our evaporative humidifiers work by piping water into the distribution tray located at the top of the humidifier. The water is uniformly distributed across the width of the tray and through a scientifically designed system of outlets. It flows by gravity over the Water Panel evaporator. Dry, hot air from the HVAC system is moved through the moisture-laden Water Panel evaporator. Natural evaporation takes place, the water is turned to vapor, and the humidified air is circulated throughout your home. INCLUDED IN THE BOX: Installation instructions and template, humidifier with built-in bypass damper, 24 VAC transformer, automatic digital humidifier control with sensor, outdoor temperature sensor, saddle valve, solenoid valve, and Model 10 Water Panel.

  • DIY install went well
Style: Humidifier
Had an old manual humidifier that was broken and wanted to upgrade to the automatic humidifier. Debated between hooking up the cheaper model to my nest thermostat or spending the extra $40 for the automatic control board. After reading more I decided the automatic control board that was being sold was a better option than the nest. Install went smooth but I consider myself handy. I’m actually proud of this install and wouldn’t recommend it for most people. But if you want to know the details for what you’re getting into here you go: 1) the hole for my old humidifier in the return vent was smaller than this new units so I had to make the hole bigger and this sheet metal is harder to work with than I expected. I used my oscillating multi tool and it certainly was a pain. 2) I had to run 9 wires to the control unit. Was not expecting that. 3 went directly to the furnace electronic board. 2 wires rerouted the fan wire from the thermostat to the furnace board through the unit. 2 I had to run to the 24v transformer that came with unit. 2 I had to run a temp sensor outside (sensor was included) and connect to. 3) in order to run all this extra wire I had to goto the store and buy 25ft of thermostat wire. It was only 8 bucks but wish I knew ahead of time. The thermostat wire is just low voltage wire that is bundled into colored strands of five. 4) old duct work plugged right in without any problem. 5) old humidifier controller left a big hole in the vent and I used some of that metal hvac tape to cover the hole. I already had that but if you don’t you’ll probably want some. 6) had to drill a 3/4” hole into the return vent to mount the new controller. The hole creates a space for the back of the control board which has a sensor to read the humidity in your house. I had an old 3/4” hole bit and it was a pain to get through the sheet metal. If I didn’t have that I would have had to goto the store and buy one. It would be hard to use a small drill but or something like that. 7) it came with a new saddle valve that punctures the water line. I wasn’t expecting that because I didn’t buy the install kit extra. It was nice though because my old one was not working. 8) the outdoor temp sensor could be a problem for you. I was lucky to find an old hole where a phone line or something used to be and ran it through that. I really hate drilling through brick or mortar so if you don’t find a hole that already exists you’ll have that task ahead of you. 9) the instructions are really only going to give you an electrical schematic of how to run all these wires. I have a background in electronics so I was able to wire it quite easily but there is no step by step instructions to help you. 10) the 24v transformer was by far the most technical aspect of this. I had to use a screwdriver to remove one of those knock outs in the side of the furnace so I could mount the thing. Then run the hot and neutral wire into the junction box where the furnace turns on and off if you take off the panel. This is what you connect to your solenoid on the side of the humidifier to that tells it to turn the water on/off. There’s not even a mention of how to do this in the instructions lol. But it’s kind of on the wiring diagram. 11) after about four or five hours I had it installed. If I was a pro who did this all the time it would take probably two hours. I spent a good amount of time determining that I was in fact about to puncture a 3/4” hole into the return and not the other way around. 12) finally I realize the controller has a test setting. So I turn it to test and it sounds like everything is working. I hear the fan kick on and water flowing into the unit. Then boom an error code comes up on the display “r3”. Thought I had it on the first try. Googled “r3 error on humidifier” and it means that the unit has been left in test mode for more than 60 seconds. Thank god. Best error code I ever discovered. Hope this helps. ... show more

  • Humidifier works great! Installed myself taking my time
Style: Humidifier
Humidifier works great! Installed myself taking my time, I broke the project into 4 phases (days) and about 2 hours planning and picking up what I needed at the store. This is a time consuming project, but if you are comfortable with other home improvements such as adding outlets, lights, switches, fixing pluming, etc...this will be a job you can do yourself. Phase one I spent about 4 hours mounting the humidifier and bypass ductwork. I purchased 6" duct from my local home improvement store. I used a 3/8" drill bit to drill to start an initial hole then used quality tin cutters to cut the square humidifier opening into my plenum and a 6" round hole for my bypass duct into my cold air return. I already have a set of left, center and right tin cutters, I switched between left/right cutters when appropriate to make clean cuts. I used 3/4" sheet metal screws with hex heads for everything. I added true metal tape around seams. Metal foil tape is for taping duct work, which is not the same as "ducttape" which is the more common tape everyone thinks of. Phase 2 I spent about an hour (which hopefully most folks will not have to do) adding a 2 gang metal box at the ceiling above the furnace to mount the 24V transformer (included with the apriaire). I added this to the circuit that powers the furnace. The instrufions tell you not to wire the transformer within the furnace 24v circuits, but it is completely ok and acceptable to wire the 110V transformer to the actual "home" 110V circuit to the furnace. I added a switch in my box so in the summer months I can turn off the transformer when I have the humidifier off. If you are not comfortable with home electrical wiring and you do not have a place to mount your 24V transformer to a 110V source, then plan on either hiring an HVAC or Electrician to add a similar box for your situation. Phase 3 I spent about an hour running a 1/4" water line from a hot water source to the Humidifier. The only thing I needed to purchase was 10' of 1/4" copper pipe. I used a couple pieces of pipe strap to hold the piping in place for my situation. A flare wrench is necessary to tighten these fittings correctly. Phase 4 I spent about 3 hours running thermostat wires as instructed in the kit. I used a stepping drill bit to drill the 3/4" hole needed for the humidistat then mounted the humidistat with two sheet metal screws, as others mentioned you need to use at least 3/4" long sheet metal screws for this mounting. I used one run of 18-5 thermostat wire to go between the humidistat and the furnace. I also got a really long run of 18-2 thermostat and door bell wire, most of it was for the outside sensor, some was used to connect the transformer, hunidifier water line solenoid and humidistat together. The system works well. I like the options to be able to let it run on its own or only when the furnace is running. I also like the outside temperature feature, basically you set this humidistat to where you want it and forget it and it will keep the humidity at a level that is no too excessive. If you over humidify your home, you will get water condensation on the windows which you do not want. The humidistat is simple to use and the bright blue display is easy to read. It would be great if it also reported the outside temperature, but it's only job is to report the relative humidity, which it does. I was told as a tip to use electrical twist caps at the humidifier water line solenoid and at the outside temperature sensor. These are serviceable parts, by using twist wire caps as apposed to butt connectors or soldering it will made it easier to replace these parts if they were ever to fail. Update: I only use the humidifier from about late December through Early March. I was warned last year that if the humidifier is always working you can over humidify the home which encourages mold growth in the duct work. The home feels warmer inside with the humidifier, even though the thermostat set at the same temperature. As for the humidifier setting itself, I have it set at 2 for our home. I did initially have it set to 4 which created way too much humidity in our home. ... show more

Style: Humidifier
Well-known brand for home furnace humidifier. However, it is marginally effective in increasing winter in-house humidity.
