  • APC Back-UPS Uninterruptable Power Supply Review
Overview: If you are looking for a small and well-built battery backup solution, I would highly recommend you look at this device. APC is a brand with a reputation for quality and this product is no different. If you are a small business owner or a home user, this device is designed for your needs. It fits nicely up against the back wall underneath a desk or on top of the desk behind a monitor. It is powerful enough to allow you to safely shut down your computer in the event of a power outage. The battery backup also has an audible tone that lets you know the power is out. If you are an IT professional, you would also benefit from this item in your organization. You can use this device on end users’ computers and other devices to allow for prolonged life of your valuable IT assets. This device is cost effective enough for most IT budgets and its large mean time between failure means you won’t spend time and money replacing them in the near future. My Experience: I have used this product for a while now and I love the peace of mind that it brings me on a stormy night. One of my favorite features is its ability to hang on a wall with the mounting holes on the side of the unit. The mounting holes allow you to hang the unit on a wall or on a desk panel to keep things tidy. This device is made with a hard-durable plastic that works well in its intended environment. The cord on the unit is long enough to reach an outlet. The cord also has an offset plug on it to allow you to shove furniture up against it without issue. The device had enough outlets to let me plug in all my devices, including a large power brick that requires extra space to plug it in. I have also put this device through its paces, I have one installed in a shed outdoors to protect and power some cameras. The location that I have mounted the device can vary in terms of heat and humidity. This unit has made it through many 100+ degree days with high humidity, and it has also made it through some cold days well below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. This device was not designed to be placed in the environment that I have placed it, but it has been doing well for the last year it has been there. Recommendation: I would highly recommend you take a look at this product if you need a cost-effective battery backup solution for your sensitive electronics. I gave this product five stars because it exceeded my expectations. You will find that it is durable yet cheap in comparison to other items. It has convenience features and is still simple to operate. I recommend buying this unit. ... show more

  • A great UPS for lower power applications
I use this as backup power for a high-end synthesizer. I live in an area that is prone to power outages and this unit works perfectly to give me time to shut down my synthesizer properly in case of a power outage. I am on the second unit, the first lasting well over 5 years before needing replacement. This is probably not suitable to a high power computer like a gaming computer, but for your average desktop this unit will work just fine, and for musical equipment, it has kept my high-end equipment safe from outages as well as power spikes. If you have a low to medium power requirement, this unit works great. ... show more

  • Perfect little UPS for router backup...WITH a few modifications!
For years I have used older or larger versions of Schneider UPS. This one is just what I wanted to run my 20 watt router during outage. However, I am not satisfied with a UPS that runs only an hour or two. True that most outages here last only a few minutes so that is great, but I live in hurricane country and need something that will last through my nightly TV viewing at least. The battery in the small unit I purchased CAN BE REPLACED or expanded easily if you have the skills and secure storage location. You can find one on Amazon or eBay for $16 or so. Is that so much?? Let's face it, you can't expect little AGM batteries to last forever, esp. if they cycle, but I find the Mighty Max brand bought here on Amazon has an amazing life and number of cycles. i even use one in my Prius which outlasts the OEM x 4. To open the case there are four little Phillips head screws on bottom.. The connections are the standard for this type battery, and you just slip off and install a new battery. See pics. I just clipped off the connectors and wired the unit to two of the OLD Mighty Max 34ah AGM batteries I had collecting dust. In parallel, of course, to maintain the same 12 volts. Obviously if you mistakenly wire them in series you will double the volts and damage the unit most likely. So for no extra money I turned this $49 UPS into one that is better than a $200 UPS for my small load. Of course, I would never try to put a bigger load on it and don't advise overloading the inverter in this unit. Don't do this if you are not a good electrician or have kids or animals or other potential accident victims around and don't have secure storage. But I have used similar for years and works fine and lasts a long time. The expanded UPS in my picture is safely in the attic, and the Mighty Max AGM batteries I use won't leak and are stable. I will sell the unused little battery that came with it on eBay to someone who needs a replacement. Replacement frequency all depends on time, temperature, how many cycles the unit experiences, depth of discharge etc. Some users may get a longer life than others. The other good thing about this is that the little UPS uses only 6 watts standby. That's great as I count every kwh I use. Do you want phantom loads constantly drawing a lot of energy for nothing. So what if internet goes out for a minute. Go have some tea and relax!! Unless you have something really critical connected. If so, you need to take steps to make sure your UPS is strong enough to handle the load for as long as necessary. BTW, in some of my earlier "expanded" UPS systems I was using a Schneider UPS, and those models actually had a socket for adding an expensive auxiliary battery which I adapted in a manner similar to what I created here on this little unit so it is not an original idea but not strictly taboo either....I guess we will see! My unit is set to not beep when power goes off which keep me from being disturbed at night if there is a brief outage. ... show more

  • Happened to get a bad one
Ordered this UPS to keep my weather station console online and reporting to the NWS during good as well as bad weather. Generally I find APC UPSs to be good products; as I have several more keeping my internet gateway and WiFi router online. For some reason this one decided that it would not keep the battery backup outlets energized even when the unit was receiving AC power. When turned on, it would work for a while and then drop power from the backup outlets (the surge-only outlets would continue to have power). And yes, I did have the battery jumper installed on the bottom of the unit. Since it is not returnable, I called Amazon tech support. The tech had me go through troubleshooting options (that I happened to have already tried before calling) and eventually decided the unit was defective and offered a refund. Accepted the offer and took the refund to purchase another unit. So far the replacement is working OK. Wrote this off to the thought that there is usually a bad one in a particular production lot of tech devices. I just got "lucky" getting the bad one. ... show more
