  • Clear cover on the filter is the only way to go
I purchased two of these filter units for serial installation on the infeed side of an on demand electric hot water heater. I really like that they are transparent, which makes decided on when the filter needs changed an easy decision. The handles which put the filter into bypass for filter changes are very very stiff. In fact the supplied handle is needed to get an extra handle length and increase torque. As luck would have it one of mine was so close to a wall I could not get the handle on the bypass handle. However, elsewhere in the system there were water turn offs and so with the water off, I just release pressure and unscrewed the clear filter cover without messing with the bypass control arm. Easy peazy. I've been pleased with these filters, and they use the same size filter material as my RO system. I think that is 3" dia x 10" tall, and these can be purchased in bulk for a decent price. So far so good. I actually wish I had them farther upstream as well, prior to the water softener and iron removal systems on the cold side. A potential future project. ... show more

  • Does it’s job
Works as expected. The only minor issue was getting the bypass handle to turn the first time.

  • High Quality water filter features
We bought this AO Smith whole house water filter after our extensive search on our favorite supplier website, Amazon. We were looking for a water filter that had a high quality filter abilities, off, bypass, and filter adjustments, as well a highly competent 3/4 inch filter “in and out” threads. This filter has metal inserts, which were highly important to us after having read so many reviews demonstrating most of the other brand filters with 3/4” plastic treading usually leaked according to many reviews. Why buy something right off the bat that has build in flaws like a leaking from in and out soft plastic threads. We have the new AO Smith filter that we just received and haven’t installed it yet. The included photos of our pump house setup for a rain catchment tank in Hawaii is still under daily use. That filter has plastic threads and Does Not leak, but we opted for a new filter after several years, because our filter o-ring was a problem. Keep in mind too, not only does the AO Smith water filter have water line metal thread inserts, it also has a unique o-ring placement that looks great in the top of the high tempered, plastic screw off, filter containment chamber. I believe the O-ring has the good possibility of not giving us the trouble as compared to the o-ring we have now that sits up in the filter upper housing. Time can only tell what’s what’s once we get the new water filter installed. I’ll try to update this review with any pros or cons once the new filter is in operation a reasonable amount of time. In the meantime, I suggest you carefully compare as I did before quickly buying a water filter. It is important to be an informed buyer. There are so many water filters on Amazon, but we think we may have bought the best one for our purpose. We do know the AOSmith filter has those real important features I mentioned that are a must in a filter. Having taken the new AO Smith filter out of the box as soon as we got it, we were very impressed over the high quality appearance of this filter it presented. We considered too the AO Smith name, a long standing reputable company name. ... show more

  • Simple solution to cut back on scale
I was wanting to protect our new tankless water heater by reducing as much sediment as possible before our city water supply enters our new expensive water heater. This seems to fill the bill. Already changed the filter for the first time and it went off without a hitch.

  • Water flow gpm
I was concerned that this filter would decrease my water flow to the house. Before I installed it, I had 11 gallons per minute, after the install it was 10.5 gallons per minute. Still very acceptable.

  • Buyer beware: internal passages only 7/16"
First off, this seems well built for the price. The control valve has positions for filter, off, and bypass. The filter housing is clear (a must) and takes standard 2.5" by 10" filters. A demerit as the filter housing is the male screwing into the valve assembly and (the bad part) the o-ring sits in a groove atop the housing. This would seem problem-some. As can be seem in the photo, I bought 2 and run them in series. The first contains the 5 micron white filter and the second the 1 micron charcoal filter. I run off a well and there is torpidity (fine silt) in the water. Sometimes it is no problem and sometimes it is. When the well is upset it will kill a charcoal filter in a day or two so being able to bypass it w/o effecting the white fiber filter was important. There are twin filter products out there but I didn't see separate controls so I went this way. BTW -- adding a pressure gauge downstream was easy and advised! Also, a wrench is included to install the filter. DON'T USE IT. The filter housing should be fine with a good hand tighten. Perhaps the wrench can be used to loosen the housing. The control valves are very hard to turn and there is a clever way the wrench can be used for leverage. BAD NEWS: The actual internal orifice in the filter is barely 7/16's of an inch. Maybe a generous 3/8's. Very maddening when your plumbing it with 3/4" PVC. Even in 'bypass' I loose 10lbs of pressure (of 50) working through that obstruction. That is why 3 stars. Nowhere is this information published. You open the box and see for yourself. ... show more
