  • Typical American Optical excellence
Color: Pewter Lens Color: True Color Gray Polarized
American Optical aka 'AO' is somewhat 'under the radar' relative to other premium optical brands but that's a function of their exclusivity. Simply put, they're not a brand that you're going to see at every department store or mall kiosk on the planet. I usually see them at optical stores or high end specialty retailers. Personally, I seek out quality products that you don't see on countless other people and that's what you've got here. American Optical dates back to 1833 and over that time they've learned a lot about making quality eyewear. Obviously, the Aviator style is as classic as it gets and AO does it right. My dad is a pilot and I go flying with him often. I sure see a lot of AO sunglasses on the faces of 'real' pilots. Gray lenses might not be the choice of party dudes at 'the club', but it is the preferred choice of a good many pilots (my dad included). The thinking is that gray lenses help reduce eye fatigue in very bright conditions. These lenses are polarized and the lenses and frames are extremely light. In fact, the entire point of the AOLite lens line is just that--to make them extremely light without sacrificing comfort. Unless you know a good deal about optical wear you might miss some of the subtle details that make AO sunglasses first rate. For example, their screws have a nylon coating injected over the threads to help minimize loosening. That's huge--a couple years back I bought a well known 'mall brand' of sunglasses. Despite their hefty price point, the frames started to loosen up almost immediately. I eventually had to get them replaced under warranty--only to have the replacement pair begin the process all over again. AO's process helps minimize it. The hinges are designed to maximize your field of vision. The shape of this frame has been modified slightly from the traditional aviator design to minimize the frames resting on your cheek which helps stave off fatigue. I'll be the first to admit that AO glasses aren't for everyone. Depending on your use case, you might want a burlier pair of sunglasses that can take a beating. For example, I have nearly indestructible glasses I wear snowboarding. If your needs are simple--working in the yard, going to the lake, etc.--you'll probably be better served with a pair of plastic sunglasses from a 'big box' store. If you're just trying to 'impress' people with a brand name you're better served heading to the mall. If you're a pilot, drive frequently in sunny conditions or just have the refined sense of taste to appreciate high quality, hand crafted sunglasses you're in the right place. Just amazing sunglasses that combine high level function with great looks. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • AO can do better
Color: Gold Lens Color: Calobar Green Polarized
I've another pair of American Optical sunglasses which are excellent by all means. These ones I found a little odd. The size is quite large even for large faces. Secondly the lens metal frame shapes on the two sides don't seem to be exactly identical. Or atleast they come off that way, where the imperfection is noticeable. Maybe it's just the lens shape but it's noticeable and distracting. Also the color combinations need a modern update, there is no matter finish or black frame. ... show more

  • Nice aviators!
Color: Silver Lens Color: Calobar Green Polarized
I've owned a pair of American Optical sunglasses before, and these are of the same quality and perfection that is synonymous with the brand. The glasses fit well and are lightweight on your face. They are comfortable to wear for long periods of time. They come with a beautiful leather case and are simply a joy to wear. They look great and are constructed very well. ... show more

  • Questionable Quality Given The Price Tag
Color: Pewter Lens Color: True Color Gray Polarized
I was really excited to get my hands on these sunglasses. I love classic aviators and these looked like they would be super premium given the $260 price tag. Upon looking into the brand it seems they have a very long heritage and are known for creating sunglasses for pilots. I thought that could only be a good thing. Off the bat, the printed card box they arrive in looks cheap and it's very thin. Opening that reveals the soft leather effect case, i'm sure it's some type of PU as it feels and smells like plastic. Totally not impressed with the case at all and it really cheapens the experience. Supposedly these are hand crafted in Illinois. In reality these look pretty cheaply made in my opinion. The frames at some points are slightly uneven. Maybe some people will love that as it shows they are hand crafted but I expect more. The 'polarized' word stamp on the top left lens is also distorted. They are extremely lightweight but not in a good way. I also don't really like how they sit on my face and aren't a good fit. Even if these were half the price I still wouldn't buy them. Maybe I have a one off bad pair. ... show more

  • Nice sunglasses
Color: Gold Lens Color: Calobar Green Polarized
Very attractive, American made sunglasses with a classic look. Super lightweight and very comfortable to wear, they fit my face well. Have polarized lenses, which is stamped in very small letters at the top of one of the lenses. The case it comes in is nice to look at, but not my favorite as far as functionality, it's too soft for good protection and too difficult to close. ... show more

  • Great glasses!
Color: Silver Lens Color: Calobar Green Polarized
The do protect you from the sun's radiation and glare and really do enhance your vision. The frames are made well and they are stylish. The price is a little up there but on the other hand you pay for what you get and these are fine shades. I like em alot!!

  • A little less than perfect
Color: Gold Lens Color: Calobar Green Polarized
Very nice sunglasses that have great polarization and look fantastic on me. The color of the lens and the frame are great and have no blemishes or discrepancies. Super light weight and provide sufficient cover for my eyes even in Las Vegas where i live. Only things i didnt like were that the carrying pouch is a bit hard to open and close as the leather flap has a small hole that goes into a metal stub and its a bit hard to get on and off. And the second thing is that although they stretch quite a bit they are tight on my temples so the arms dig into my skin and its very noticeable, maybe with use and over time they will stretch out a bit more and cause less digging. But all in all these are some very nice glasses that look fantastic and im sure will last a long time. ... show more
