  • One of the best RPG games out for Gamecube.
Animal Crossing is a very fun and addicting game that can even prove to be challenging. The concept is that you are a person living in a town populated by animals. These animals are human like though and can walk on two legs, talk, and wear clothing. Interacting with them is one of the interesting aspects of the game. And while it is true that young children might find the animals cute and fun, it is a game that can be enjoyed by all ages. You start off coming into a town with very little money and just the shirt you are wearing. Fortunately, you get set up with the local shop keeper, a friendly racoon, who agrees to let you buy a house in town. But, since you are low on money he agrees to let you work for him for a while to repay some of your debt. This is pretty much a tutorial. You meet the townsfolk, learn how to deliver items, and recieve a map to help you around. After this you are pretty much free to do as you choose. This might seem a little dull. Luckily, there are many options that will you keep you entertained. 1. Fishing. In Tom Nook's (the raccoon) store you will be able to buy a fishing rod. Then you can take it to the river, the beach, or a pond to fish. These fish can be sold for bells (the currency used) or you can donate them to the mueseum. Once you catch all fish, you get a special reward. 2. Bug- catching. This is pretty much the same as fishing. You buy a net from the store and catch insects that are around your town. 3. Paying off your debt. Once you repay off a debt on your house you will be asked if you want to expand it (unless your house is as big as it gets). If you keep repaying debts and expanding your house eventually you will get 2 floors and a basement. 4. Collecting furniture wallpaper flooring and other items. After all what is a house without furniture. There are hundreds of things you can get for your house resulting in many home decorating options. You can choose to take part in a program called the HRA that will give your house points based on the interior design. Get a high enough score and you might get a prize. Another great aspect of the game is the time. It is based on real time so one hour is one hour in the game. The seasons and months change accordingly and some bugs and fish can only be found in certain seasons. Also, different holidays come and go moslty on the days of real holidays. Ex: on the 4th of July there are fireworks. These are very fun and you can usually get rare items from them. Also people come every week. A dog comes on Saturday that will play songs on his guitar. If you have a friend with the game you can put in their memory card and visit their town with your person. This can be fun since every town is different. Different fruit, townsfolk, locations, etc. You can even write them a letter at the post office. Overall, this game is very entertaining and the things to in it are endless. ... show more

  • You must think we're all crazy, but it really IS fun.
Being an Animal Crossing fan is inherently frustrating, as you try to convert your friends. Imagine, if you will... You: It's so cool, you can catch bugs, and go fishing, and buy wallpaper and carpets! Friend: Uh..huh. *long pause* That's it? You: Nono! You can run errands for the animals in town, or plant fruit trees, or dig up fossils, or write letters! And time passes even when you're not playing. Like every Saturday night there's a dog who comes to town and plays a song for you. Friend: Okay, riiiight. I'm going to go stand somewhere else now. Scoff all you will, my friends, but Animal Crossing is one of those rare titles that sells the platform. It's entirely nonviolent (you don't even kill the bugs and fish you catch) and completely open-ended. Play as much or as little as you want. If you're considering this purchase as a gift, bear in mind that reading and writing are essential parts of gameplay. Very young children (like my 4 year-old) can enjoy running around, shaking the trees for fruit and catching bugs, but fluency in English will enhance your experience immensely. Also, if multiple people want to start characters, you may want to purchase a separate memory stick. There are certain activities in town that can only be done once (e.g. the town museum will only accept one of each fossil type) and limited resources that refresh daily (e.g. a special money-giving rock that dispenses bags of coin to the first person to whack it with their shovel). With two sticks you can travel to each other's towns and meet a bunch more animal friends (who will show you letters they received from the other player, so watch what you write!) There are additional capabilities for those with a Game Boy Advance, which include an additional island to explore. Also, the e-Reader for the GBA lets you scan in new songs and mini-games. Neat features, but you can still have plenty of fun without buying all that extra hardware. One last thing: you can trade items with anyone, anywhere, without having to hook your Gamecube to the internet. The town merchant will take an item and give you a special code in exchange. Give the code to your friend, who gives it to the merchant in HIS town, and... voila! There is a thriving trading community on the internet, for those of you who love collecting. ... show more

  • Extremely Addictive - For All Ages!
I ordered this game on the off-chance that my 8 yr. old grandson would be a little occupied while staying with me during spring break this week and I absolutely got my moneys worth! Not only was he completely immersed in this imaginary world for the entire week - so was his grandmother (umm . . . . yes, that would be me)! Between the two of us, this game was running from around 7:00 a.m. (very good fishing time in the town my character lives in, not to mention the grandson was still sleeping) until approximately 11:30 p.m. (good time to pull weeds, shake trees for spending currency and get a little more fishing in!). I was pretty surprised by how much I enjoyed just puttering my little character around in this imaginary world that I actually just ordered MY OWN COPY of the game to KEEP at my house. And what good is the game without the game console, so I also ordered my own GameCube, Wavebird Wireless controller and an extra memory card (because part of the fun is taking a train ride to visit a distant town and you need an extra memory card for that). Now I can't wait to set up my own town and my grandson can bring his town over on his memory card and when he visits me our Animal Crossing characters can visit each other also! I definitely have to give this game TEN stars (but Amazon only lets me give it five)!! ... show more
