And side by side they wander is a short novella written by author molly Tanzer, she is an American writer that has written several books. Molly has unique ideas and stories. With a lot of creativity, she combines mystery, adventure, horror, fantasy, and romance. And side by side they wander is a science-fiction story that includes space, art-heist and adventure. It takes place in the far future where the main characters: Fennel Tycho (the narrator), Tarquin, Tchik-Tchik, Misora and Jack Kirby travel to another galaxy to take back the art that has been on loan at the Greenwood museum. Not only does the short story take you to another unrealistic, advanced technology world but also makes you think about the question of who is real and what is fake? The intended audience are older teens/adults that are interested in science-fiction and adventures. This audience would enjoy Molly’s style of writing. I think the two most important characters are Misora and Jack Kirby. They both have an important part during the adventure. Misora was mentioned in the book as the muscle of the group; she has six siblings folded into her body because of illegal biotech. Making her the strongest among them. Jack Kirby was a sensynth, the most powerful machine intelligence on earth that helped the group hack the security systems. Although they both have physical important roles, I think the author perfectly chose these two characters to really connect them to the main question of the book: what's real? Tanzer used Misora to really explore what identity is. Jack connects to the book's theme even more, since he's a non-human that has meaningful connections and relationships which include the one he had with fennel. If it weren’t for her, he wouldn’t have gone on this adventure with the crew. The group's plan was to travel to a different galaxy, to the Greenwood museum and steal back the six original masterpieces from the Celerians and replace them with fake identical ones. However, things did not go smoothly one of the reasons being is Tarquin's corporate support vanished and that caused mistrust and uncertainty during the mission. And after reaching the museum another group got involved, which caused even more mistrust and betrayal. For someone like me that isn’t into science fiction and fantasy, I think Tanzer did an exceptional job on making the book interesting to me. By intentionally choosing characters and the way she developed the ideas. Her style of writing also contributed to me connecting with the book. The heist is part of the book that I was really interested in evaluating. Although the story is about an art-heist, it's not the main and only focus. I think Tanzer intentionally worked her way from the choice of the characters and identities to the relationships between them to really make us think about the philosophical question who/what is real? As someone who doesn’t like science fiction, I think this book was different than a typical science fiction book. Because of the connection it has with the theme which really made it stand out to me. The book appealed to me in a physiological way because it makes you think of what is original and what's a copy and what makes an original that important and valuable compared to a copy. The title also caught my attention because it connects slightly to the book; the word wander shows what the main characters are doing in space and their adventure. I believe the title works well with the story since it doesn't give any sort of explanation of the plot. Novella unravels the idea of art authenticity.

And Side by Side they Wander by Molly Tanzer Science Fiction Book Setting – The novella takes place on Earth around 2037. The novella introduces us to a group of “underqualified misfits”, who strive to retrieve earth’s original art works from a specific race of aliens that live all the way across the universe. In where infatuated love, problem solving, and hidden truths are experienced during their galactic adventure towards Greenwood. I really enjoyed the interaction between the characters and the unexpected plot twist that arose during the heist. This novella served as a source of introspection and reflection. However, I believed that combining just a glimpse of the other characters’ perspective could have brought interesting angles about the topic of art and its value. Other than that, I think the book brought into play a very important aspect of authenticity and the uncertainty that comes with it. Therefore, I would love to read some of her other books to see what kind of topic she would suggest next. The motif I found most interesting in the novella was the reoccurring love uncertainty the main character experienced. In some portions of the novella, she felt confident in the cherished relationship, but by the next portion she was doubting all over again. These written scenes provide a space for readers to feel related to the character, ultimately causing self-reflection within the reader. Which makes the work vivid and realistic. Because of this, I would describe the artist's style as a narrative and expository style, with subtle descriptive imagery.

nice book but it is complex

This is a nice book. It really makes you stop and reflect. However, it is a complex book, so I feel like it is not for everyone. It relates art, science, and the terminology used all combined make it a little bit more complex, in my opinion. I liked the theme of the book, and how creative the author was. But I wanted some more descriptions on the characters, and place.

Good, but dark

Excellent novella. And oh look, a literary novella and it’s Tor publishing it. I don’t think I’ve read a bad novella from Tor yet. This one is a little dark though if you’re not in a good place for dark.

The art heist of the century

I have always enjoyed art history, so I was immediately drawn to the concept of this book. Add an interstellar caper, sentient fungi, and a dash of myth and I'm all in. As always, Molly delivers. If you are looking for an engaging and delightful read, this is the book for you. Highly recommended!

Character-driven and cerebral sci-fi novella.

"And Side By Side They Wander" by Molly Tanzer is a sci-fi story about a group of humans traveling through space to an interstellar art museum with the intention of ‘stealing back’ Earth’s treasures — loaned centuries earlier to the alien race pivotal to saving the planet from humanity’s mismanagement. Actually based on a real-life situation, as the author explains in the afterword, there are some interesting concepts and ideas mentioned about the nature of society in ‘post-scarcity’ Earth, but at novella length not much opportunity to really explore and expand upon them. This review is based on an advance copy provided by the publisher. The story is character-driven and cerebral — readers take note: the book blurb hints at an Ocean’s 11 heist romp set in space, but that really isn’t what you’re getting — although, again, the novella length makes it difficult to become truly invested in anyone except the protagonist. Unaware it was a novella until noticing how quickly I was moving through it, in the end I found the story serviceable and thought-provoking. I hope future readers find this to be true as well. I give it 3 stars, which in my review system is a “A good read, worth a reader’s time in my opinion. I enjoyed it.”

Deeply philosophical science fiction that stays with you.

This book is a wonderful, thought provoking look at what it means to be a creative and to make art, love art, and appreciate art, in all its forms. It is deeply philosophical and at its heart, it ask the reader to question what it is they truly value about the content we consume and how we consume it and what it is we value about it. Yes, it is an “Art Heist”, but don’t expect a rip-roaring space adventure…in some sense, it is definitely that—if you care about creativity and what you think about art. But then again, there’s a lot to chew on here for something so compact. It does what the best of Sci-Fi can offer, it asks you questions and doesn’t give you all the answers, lets you think on things and leaves you with a palpable sense of worry for where we are headed. There’s more to chew on and think over than there are pages here, so, in my estimation, she’s done what few can with a book, it sticks with you long after you’re done. Give it a go, it’s short but powerful and you’ll be glad you did.

A thought provoking novella!

This is novella that will make you think. There are a lot of moments that felt very relevant to today's society. It's a heavier read for how short it is. It could be because the mirror of this subject looks like it reflects current day. I tend to have a harder time with novellas and I wish this one was a bit longer. The character development was good, I was really into the unrequited love topic. The world-building was good, but more pages would have helped. There are things that I think needed more time or explanation. Overall, I thought the writing was good and this story was thought provoking. I do think there are areas that a longer book would have helped. Thanks to the publisher for the gift!!
