Description

On a planet far far away, a young veterinarian is drafted into service by his autocratic government. Dr. Cy Berger’s family is imprisoned and threatened with torture and death if he doesn’t successfully run the first-ever interplanetary veterinary service. His mission is to travel the galaxy, spread goodwill, and offer veterinary services to the inhabitants. He’s given a spaceship furnished with the finest medical equipment and lab facilities, and his crew includes one veterinary assistant, one very perceptive AI, and one government agent: a racist, religious zealot. Therein lies the ulterior motive for such lavish expenditures, which have nothing to do with Cy’s profession and more to do with espionage in advance of a galactic invasion. As Cy treats a variety of alien life-forms, he builds trust and allies and falls in love, but his top priority is to find a way to free his parents and save the galaxy from impending war. Read more

  • Fun romp of a space opera, appropriate for teens and adults
This is a light, mostly non military space opera, with a small touch of romance, and a lot of interesting 'animal' puzzles. The author, and the main character!, use their veterinarian backgrounds to create and solve issues with various aliens. This makes for a really unusual and interesting twist on standard space operas. The other interesting twist is the main character's home planet and its problems. It is a planet long ago settled by Jewish settlers which has now become dominated by religious fanatics. The vet not only needs to help any and all other planets but also his own. This is a light weight romp without a lot of technological details, very low fighting level or violence, but still has some other elements of space opera. These include a special ability given to the main character, intriguing aliens, and more. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a fun, interesting but light space opera this is the one. Note: the author seems to be moving into episodic sequels unfortunately. I hope he will soon write a full length novel instead. ... show more

  • When Is The Last Time You Just Had Fun Reading SciFi?
Cy Berger, on the cusp of graduating Veterinary School, runs afoul of a brutal religious fundamentalist government. Instead of the punishment he expects, he is handed a diploma and a fully-outfitted Veterinary medical space ship. His mission: to traverse the numerous planets of the known galaxy offering his services, recruiting students for the veterinary school back home, and spreading the good will of Dovid’s World, his home planet. And lest he even consider turning such an honor down, none-so-vague threats are made against his family. So Cy embarks on a series of adventures across the galaxy, curing plagues, outwitting corrupt planetary government officials, and falling for a beautiful off-world veterinarian. Always with the burning questions in mind: Why was he, a known dissident, chosen for this mission? What is the true purpose of the mission? Can he navigate what becomes a stickier web of intrigue with every light year traveled without tripping up and getting his family imprisoned, tortured,...or worse? Cy is accompanied by his arch nemesis, the thinly veiled government spy Rebbe Levi, and the large, very capable Furoletto “Fur” Cohen, who has secrets of his own. Cy is a hothead and can’t seem to keep himself from antagonizing the equally volatile Levi, and Fur is often cast in the role of peacemaker between them. It soon becomes clear to Cy that his own government suffers from a well-deserved public image problem from a previous failed attempt at a military backed invasion of some surrounding planets. It also becomes clear to he and Fur that Levi’s secret mission is to seek intelligence and plant sleeper agents on these other planets for a future planned second attempt. (This is no spoiler, it’s revealed fairly early in the book.) After the initial set-up, the book settles into a somewhat episodic series of adventures chapter-to-chapter while advancing the overarching plot with each new planet visited. Parts of this book put me in mind of L. Ron Hubbard’s Mission Earth series, while other parts were reminiscent of Keith Laumer’s intrepid interstellar diplomat, Jame Retief. There is humor, action, intrigue, romance, and aliens. I enjoyed this book a lot. It is well-paced and the idea of an interplanetary veterinarian is, as far as I can tell, an entirely original one. And frankly it was just plain fun to read! The book can sometimes get pretty far down into the weeds of medical science, for those who like that sort of thing, and also has plenty of other scifi elements to please hard-core adventure fans. I don’t recall much in the way of profanity or other adult topics so this would be a great read for kids as well. I really enjoyed this book, and I know you will too. I highly recommend it. ... show more

  • Could have been better
A set of short stories strung wrapped in a loose overarching plot. The short stories where the vet and crew go to the 'planet of the week' and cure what ever ails it vary in quality but are ok overall. Unfortunately the connecting plot involving the tyrannical government of his planet and the eventual resolution of the whole thing are very weak. ... show more

  • Light, humorous, very fun to read.
I found the book to be very readable and enjoyable. In reminded me a bit of Murray Leinster's "Med Ship" series of stories. Each vignette is pretty much independent, excluding the last story which is the "climax" of the book. The main character is very personable and likable. The evil character is, IMO, the epitome of evil in that he (and his group) pervert excellence to enslave and torture others who disagree with their _opinions_. ... show more

  • To the Brave Veterinarians I bow to you....
I enjoyed the characters and how they worked through a unique and fun premise about Veterinarians. The only thing that was a little off for me was just how quickly the author wrapped everything up. You have this build up with the regime and the man who was too stupid to truly do intelligence work and then all of a sudden the whole process is wrapped up into a neat little bow and they move on into a new adventure. ... show more

  • Great, Imaginative Alien Cultures
What a whirlwind science fiction adventure! Cy and Fur embark on an amazing journey to save the galaxy one strange and fantastic species at a time. From a sentient jungle, to lycanthropes, to a super-telepathic hive mind with a multiple personality disorder - this book has everything for the science fiction fan. Not just that, but you'll learn more than you ever thought possible about veterinary medicine and Jewish culture along the way. This book has humor, romance, travel, intrigue, and some of the most imaginative alien cultures I've read about in a long time. Well done, Mr. Benjamin! I look forward to more from you in the future. ... show more
