  • Great microscope to get kids into science!
Style: Microscope Kit
Despite all the various reviews my microscope came well packed and all of the items and glass slides were inside their own boxes. All components were inside sealed styrofoam container inside a plain carton box. Everything in the pictures except color filter ring were there. My microscope does have this ring but it has no filters, just holes of different size, I would assume to control amount of light that comes from bottom light source. It came with lots of sample slides and overall worked really well. I really cannot complain about optics and it is remarkably decent given the cost. I did want one that has dual light source system and while top light works okay, it isn't bright enough so when your objective is too close to the sample, it blocks too much light. We used a simple usb LED snake light to overcome this. Some other reviews mentioned just getting a cheaper version with only bottom light which probably makes sense but I think relatively small price difference is worth for the top light even though it isn't as good as it could have been. Microscope does have light intensity control so I might just swap the LED's for better higher output ones to make for a self contained improvement. Otherwise, the whole thing is metal and seems really sturdy. Adjustment knobs are also solid and work well. So I consider this a very good product as my daughter and myself are really happy with it. ... show more

  • Wonderful, Incredible Microscope/Deal; Packaging from HELL!!!!
Style: Microscope Kit
I'm giving this five stars because it is an incredible kit...BUT!!!! BROKEN GLASS!!! I wondered if AmScope had fixed this. I thought, surely, this was an issue a while ago. NOPE! It is a CURRENT ISSUE!!! Here's the deal. The glass slide covers are NOT SEALED! (see first pic for that package) These suckers are about an 1" square, and they come out and get bounced around. I had to carefully unpackage everything, wipe it down with paper towels (to grab the glass shards while also being disposable), and then dab spots with tap to get up some that were just stuck. Because the slide covers are so small and thin, and the microscope is encased in styrofoam, they stick like glue, almost! (see second pic, they slip down the side, broken pieces throughout) It took me almost an hour to unpack the items and clean up! All that said, this microscope is WONDERFUL! It has a great deal of versatility and shows promise to intrigue budding scientists and young biologists alike. Honestly, minus the glass business, I want to buy one of these for myself!!! I've missed having a microscope on hand! And this one blends the balance of the different light exposures, allowing unique perspectives on translucent, semi-lucent, and opaque materials alike. It is worth the price and then some! Just be VERY CAREFUL when you open this sucker! Personally, I ended up throwing all the packaging away, just because I could not get rid of every sliver (thought I was good until a sliver went into my finger!). Still, I don't think you'll find this kind of deal for this kind of microscope! It's worth the bit of discomfort! ... show more

  • Good Microscope + Good Book = Good Deal
Style: Microscope Kit
We got this for our five-year-old and seven-year-old for Christmas. Even the seven-year-old is a little too young to handle it carefully, but I think this microscope was a really smart choice. It has 4x, 10x, and 40x magnification, just like any microscope we would have used in school. It also has an option to light an object from the top, so you can magnify non-translucent objects, like a leaf or a little pile of powdered sugar (that’s what we’ve looked at so far, anyway!). We got it just for a fun gift, but as parents, so far we’re enjoying it as much as the kids! I chose this one because it seems like a good value with the microscope book it comes with, which really is a great book, and I included some images from the book. The book is fine for the 7 year old, but is really aimed toward someone older. The microscope images are nice and crisp. I don’t work in a lab or anything, but both of us hold degrees in scientific fields and have used microscopes a bit, and we both think it’s good. It comes with some already made slides, and then supplies to make your own. The microscope plugs into the wall but also comes with batteries. So if you want it all in one kit, I recommend this product. ... show more

  • I really wanted to like it but...Not compatible with accessories.
Style: Microscope Kit
This is a gorgeous, solid-built microscope and I was really excited to get it and share the wonderful microscopic world with my daughters. Upon receipt, I quickly opened the package and made sure it would work before showing to my girls, as working with a low quality one can quickly become a frustrating experience and you end up with an expensive paper weight. Here are my issues: *The lighting is decent, although I'm used to dimming light source (adjustable brightness -which this one does not have-). *The extras are really cool (pre-made slides and blank slides to make your own)... * The stage is not mechanical (you can't move the slide around once mounted, has to be done manually.... meaning, you have to get it just right. No biggie! I'll just order a mechanical stage off their catalog right??? WRONG! You cannot add that accessory to this model. THAT was the deal-breaker for me. I called the company, and they were really nice and tried to help, but the bottom line: you cannot use a mechanical stage or a camera attachment (to view on larger monitor). They said this was an entry level microscope, and if I wanted all that I would have to spend more.... I wanted to say: "well, it's not like they're giving this one away!" because they're not. For the same amount, you can purchase the MC150, which has the availability of adding accessories. You don't get the extras, but you can purchase slides and kits separately for a very reasonable amount (make your own kit). My point is: you are already spending $85+ on this, why not spend a little extra and have options for adding (very useful) accessories and get the most out of your viewing experience. (Slide prep kit is $17, blank slides are $5) I am returning this one it'll cost me $10, but I will have to do better research before purchasing my next one. I don't mind spending a little more if it means getting one that will last for years to come and allow me to prepare my own slides. ... show more
