  • Awesome Product - BOTH functional and nice looking
Style: PowerStep Plug-N-Play
The kit came well packaged - no damage or missing parts. Installation took me well over 3 hours, but I was picky and had a terrible set-up for doing the installation - outside, on my back, under the truck. And I'm very picky about how the cables were routed, and how the wires ran up to the connector under the dash. Solid product, no give when you step on the board. Worked perfectly. LED's look great. Wiring harness was just the right length for all connections. Had been considering installing an override switch in the cab to 'force' the boards to stay extended for snow clearing, washing, etc., but the latest design has a 'feature' whereby you can simply rest your foot on the board when you close the door, and the board will sense this and remain extended! While this is a safety feature, it also means there's no need to rig an override switch! Very, very pleased with the product. For the Silverado, the retracted boards conveniently cover the LED's, keeping them from getting 'coated' in road debris (they are only exposed when the boards are extended, and you're probably not driving down a wet, snowy road at that point! But I have to say, the installation instructions were very weak, and made installation a challenge. There was at least one typo on one of the nut reference numbers too, but anyone attempting their own installation would easily work around that. First 'real' complaint - while the instructions start off having you install the motor on the lift arm, there's NO HINT at what position the lift arm should be locked in to (fully extended, fully retracted, in the middle, etc.) when you engage the motor gear teeth with the lift arm teeth. I guessed at fully extended, which is probably the best option, but on my truck (31.6" wheels, no lift kit) that meant that after mounting the boards to the lift arm and idler arm, that I could barely get by head under the board to see and work under the truck (running harness, tying off cable). Also, motor install for me left the arm slightly offset from actual 'bottom', which made squaring up the board during install difficult since the idler arm WAS at the bottom. Note, had I first engaged the motor with the lift arm fully retracted, I would have had more space to work, but probably wouldn't have been able to mount the boards to the lift arms, nor mount the LED's. Complaint #2 - for the double cab, you have to cut 7" off each board. Not bad with a Sawzall or bandsaw, but I opted for a hacksaw to get a good cut without having to clamp the boards down. No instructions for how to remove the board end cap to cut it, or to reinstall it. One has to be careful here, it's easy to turn the compression fitting inside the cap the wrong way, and/or overtighten the fitting when re-installing the cap. Worked out okay, but it was a pain. The whole time I was thinking how much easier it would have been for AMP Research to cut the boards to the right length, coat the ends (as they already do), and stock a second SKU for the double cab. I understand SKU control and proliferation, but this would have been a most appreciated thing. For the two loose wires that need to be run through the floor and up to the connector under the dash, I opted to carefully drill through the rubber brake line grommet in the floor. I saw this on YouTube and it worked well. The rubber closed in tightly around the wires. I used an ODB splitter I purchased, which had a nice right angle connection to the dash connector. Pretty much completely hides the connection from view in the cab. Final complaint is the connection to the battery in the SIlverado. Following instructions on where to mount the control module, and living with the lengths of the two supply wires that go to the battery, all but assures me that the zip ties and some of the connections will have to be removed when it's time to replace the battery. More of a SIlverado design flaw in my opinion, but it'll make replacing the battery more difficult, and something I'll do, rather than having a mechanic mess with. I will probably eventually move the control module to a different location that is NOT in the way of battery removal, and extend the supply wires and connect them up differently. Personal preference - there's nothing wrong with the way AMP Research instructions cover this. All in all, definitely something anyone mechanically minded can do themselves, and you'll absolutely love the way the boards disappear under the truck, and the first time it's dark out and the LED's light up the steps. And like another reviewer stated, the steps are nice and low for shorter people when extended - something very difficult to do with fixed boards. Very pleased customer! ... show more

  • The best upgrade I have bought for my truck to date.
Style: PowerStep Plug-N-Play
May be the coolest and most functional upgrade to my truck yet. Steps actuate quickly, led's super bright. Whole package is high quality and well made. Well worth the price tag in my opinion. Wiring harness is perfect length and is truly plug and play. The difficulty in the installation was the alignment of some of the bolt holes on the truck, not the step components. Found the best way to install is leave everything loose, and when you attach steps to actuators the steps being perfectly straight lines up everything and squares it all to the truck. Then you just tighten all your fasteners. It took me 4 hours, by myself in a garage to install. But I was very meticulous with the routing of the wiring, etc. On the passenger side, there is not a lot of options for zip tying the harness up, so invest in a few cushion clamps and self tapping screws. VERY clean install. Very quiet motors as well. Whole package only added 58 pounds to the truck. When steps are stowed, unless you know what to look for, they are virtually invisible which is what I wanted. If you like the clean lines of your truck and do not want the normal bulky steps/running boards, then these are for you. Time will tell if these stand up to the environment, but for now they are worth every penny.I will update this review after some months on the road. ****UPDATE**** After only 3 days, the price of these steps dropped $135 from what I paid. After contacting customer service, and even though it was against normal policy but due to the difficulty of removing and returning, they refunded me the difference in price. • I highly recommend these Amp running boards; they're a sweet upgrade to anyone's ride, that's for sure!
Style: PowerStep Plug-N-Play
I ordered these steps for my Chevy Silverado 1500, LT Z71 Double Cab, and the package arrived very quickly. I took inventory of materials right away, and all components were accounted for. I organized the parts for a "3 phase" installation process: 1) Motor installation to motor linkage assemblies per instructions and torques specs, and cutting-to-size the aluminum, black powder coated running boards (Double Cab - NOT Crew Cab - requires trimming 7"); 2) Installation/attachment of idler linkage and motor linkage assemblies to vehicle, per torque specs, and installation of the running boards to idler and motor linkage assemblies; also, fine tuning to make sure linkages were perfectly square/perpendicular to vehicle body. 3) Electrical work, including wire harness routing, securing power supply, installing/connecting LED lighting, running OBD2 connection through floorboard and connecting via posilock connectors, and all taping, strapping, heat-shrinking connectors, and final checklist to make sure everything was perfectly installed. I took my time (I'm pretty meticulous and like to listen to tunes and clean things up as I go when working on vehicles) and the project was completed in about 8 hours total. I could have finished much faster, but I really planned it out and executed the install to my exact liking and specification. The steps operate extremely well, they're very sturdy. There are absolutely no issues whatsoever. The last thing I did was simply plug in the fuse, and that was it. Voila! The motors retracted, and the job was done. The LEDs are an upgrade from my last set of Amp Power Steps, and they add a very nice aesthetic touch to the whole package... but, they're obviously really practical as well. A FEW TIPS: Make sure you follow the instructions; take your time and cover the fenders of your vehicle with fender covers or soft towels to protect the finish; disconnect the negative on the battery during the installation process; I chose to use the frame to ground the system, rather than the negative on the battery terminal. I prefer that and think it's a much more solid grounding platform; make sure the linkages are perpendicular to the vehicle body, or you could end up stripping the hex bolts when installing the boards, have out of whack reveals and uneven gaps when the boards are in a retracted position, or, put extra strain and added wear on the linkage assemblies; use extra zip ties to secure things as needed, especially at plug-in locations and connection points. This prevents unnecessary pulling or tugging on connections; I did not follow the suggested LED location measurements. I centered my LEDs on each door and kept them just far down enough that they're hidden when the boards are retracted. This will keep dirt and mud off of them when driving; leave a few inches of slack at OBD connection. Your dealer or mechanic will appreciate it, as they need to use this plug as well to access your vehicles diagnostic codes, etc.; if you don't own a heat gun to shrink the LED connectors, you can use a soldering iron and gently go over them in a brushing motion (without touching any wiring, JUST the connectors) until they shrink. Just stating the obvious, but make sure you don't burn yourself and that there are NO flammables anywhere. It's not a preferred method, but just a suggestion that does work in a pinch, because shrinking those connectors is imperative in keeping water/moisture/dirt and eventual corrosion out. I also taped them after shrinking with 3 passes of quality electrical tape, since they are under the truck and, to reiterate, in very "wet" locations; Lastly, if you're not car-savvy, watch a video or two on YouTube as to better familiarize yourself with the installation process. Anyway, that's about it. Hope this helps someone out there. All told, I highly recommend these Amp running boards; they're a sweet upgrade to anyone's ride, that's for sure! ... show more
